In this video we climb a mountain to get a bird’s-eye view of the Eaton fire that wiped out Altadena. This is a fire that wiped out 10,000 homes of a working class LA suburb and is a DIFFERENT fire than the Palisades, which occurred on the same day.
At 6:30 pm a fire started in Eaton Canyon, up in the mountains. 60mph-80mph winds then blew that fire across the mountain brush and then down into the city, scouring the houses for miles with burning embers and sparks.
Entire neighborhoods are destroyed and thousands of people have to start over, and they could use your help.

If you have any other charities or organizations to recommend that are directly working on the LA Wildfires, please post them here. Edit: We've made this video an official fundraiser through KZbin's system. KZbin will handle donating the AdSense, and there is a donate link on the video page if you're willing and able to donate directly. During this time, we may switch up the organization we're donating to in order to spread out the donations to multiple charities, so don't be alarmed if the Total Amount Raised changes between different organizations, and keep an eye out for updates/changes. Stay safe LA.

Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) is raising money to provide better equipment and other support for the incarcerated firefighters that are out fighting these fires! They're working night and day to save the state of California and its people for only $5 a day, so by donating you're providing these folks with food, boots, equipment, etc to help combat the fires. Any amount helps! ❤️👨‍🚒

FIRE FIGHTER HERE: Do NOT get anywhere near downed powerlines, they can drop you and everyone around you to the ground, limp for a dozen metres. And then you're dead. The voltages are crazy high, allowing the current to flow VERY LONG DISTANCES, even through very poor conducting surfaces/materials. DRY OR WET GROUND DOES NOT MATTER!!! Do not automatically assume the line is "dead" or low voltage. As crews repair lines, downed lines can suddenly become live with a huge voltage spike, like a taser

This exactly. and to the people saying the area didnt have power so they were safe, that could have changed at any moment, or even been a false assumption. You dont assume a gun is unloaded, even if your pretty sure it is you treat it as if it is loaded, power lines should be viewed with the same discretion regardless of wether you think they are live or not.

That area of California is like my area of Australia, Niko's right in that there is only so much you can do to mitigate such a disaster. Fire management at what's called the "interface" between nature and society is challenging itself, but out in nature all you can do is reduce the amount of fuel available for the fire in the low-fire seasons, and be ready to defend the interface areas, while the wildfire burns itself out or hits some kind of barrier. This fire was especially tragic, due to the high speed winds allowing the fire to jump well beyond the interface and into neighborhoods, and any barrier would have been easily jumped as well. This type of ecosystem evolved with wildfires before humans settled, and it would naturally keep fuel levels low with regular smaller scale fires. But since humans tend to put fires out when they start, the fuel can build up near settlements, which means much more significant wildfires. Throw significant wind in, and it is quite literally a disaster waiting to happen.

One of the big reasons the plant life gets so flammable is the long periods of drought, which affects most of California. I’ve seen historic drought maps covering the past half century, and it appears to be getting worse every decade.

DO NOT APPROACH DOWNED POWER LINES! Electrician here. The line they were looking at is known as a service drop so the voltage is already stepped down. that explains why they didn't get hurt this time, but still doesn't make it safe, just a little less dangerous. For powerlines that haven't been stepped down to enter a building, the electricity can and does travel through the earth away from the line and gradually dissapates. what this means is that different distances from the line will have different voltage, so as you walk towards it, your feet will have a voltage difference between them. A difference in voltage causes electricity to flow, so you don't even have to get close enough to touch the line to get shocked from below and dropped. All of this is even more true for the big transmission lines. Also, your regular shoes are not designed to stop electricity. they may work for a bit, but can be overwhelmed by sufficient voltage. Approaching a downed line is a stupid game with the stupidest of prizes.

@@routyboutyconsidering they didn't say anything in the video about safety around powerlines it's important to make sure people are informed. It doesn't hurt anyone to be safe, and if someone is knowledgeable about a safety hazard why shouldn't they share that knowledge? Forgive my ignorance, but as an Aussie I feel obliged to ask if California does yearly burn-offs. For those who don't know, Australia is so hot and prone to bushfires, that every year the government have people go around heavily brushed areas and literally light small, contained fires. This "burns-off" all the dead leaves and stuff that would largely fuel the beginnings of a bush fire so that bushfires can't occur as easily.

Yes, California does prescribed burns and has been for most of the 21st century. But these tend to run into issues: they are *very* difficult to control, and prescribed burns in CA have gotten out of control several times over the years due to the dry windy weather. Climate change has been a huge problem for finding windows where it's safe to do these. It's also working against 100 years of bad fire policy that's created ticking time bombs over every inch of the state. There's just no time to cover everything before it catches
@thecactusman17
@thecactusman17 25 күн бұрын
Yes, California does prescribed burns in rural areas like this. In addition to problems with dry conditions, wind and urban sprawl making burn containment difficult, there is also another issue: federal land management of areas within California territory which must be maintained by federal employees as opposed to state employees. This can create conflicts where state forestry services carefully manage burns in one area while just a few hundred meters away federal land isn't scheduled for burn maintenance for weeks, months or years. Also privately owned land which might become dangerously overgrown before it can be managed appropriately. This federal land issue heavily impacts most of the western United States, and many people outside of the region - including many US citizens in the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard - aren't aware of how much it restricts state action on things like land management and infrastructure preparation.

Just want to add that this time of year from what I've learned is not socals normal fire season and that there is a possibility some of this was caused by arson. Not to get political, but yes, this very much can be blamed on the politicians running the city and the state BECAUSE it's California. We DO have a fire season. This has happened before. Santa Ana winds played a tremendous part but our leaders did not do their appropriate part to mitigate this disaster. We had multiple years of wet winters and this, our first dry winter in a while, should have triggered a massive effort to clear out all the accumulated dry brush from years of growth and a huge public campaign to clear out private yards. The only positive that will come from this is that enough people with influence were affected and will push for the necessary changes. Also, like others who have already mentioned, thank you for the educational video without interfering with emergency services and broadcasting people's personal tragedies up close.

With 90 mph winds brush isn’t the issue. Fires spread house to house in those conditions. It could be a bit of an issue for getting the fire started. But this could have just as easily been started in a house by an unattended candle or unsafe fireworks usage and it would have likely been just as bad. Still we could do more to clear out brush and enforce fire regulations. It would go a long way to just make our houses dome shaped so there are fewer places for embers to get stuck.

@im1fadedRob fire is a natural part of California's ecosystem. Their state tree, the Sequoia, requires fire to germinate, for example. The problem is the policy of fire suppression, and then not clearing the land. Fuel builds up and instead of being cleared naturally by fires every year or two, it burns so hot it melts the soil and burns trees that should be big enough to survive a small ground fire. While frequent small fires are required and helpful for the ecosystem, these large fires take decades to fully recover from. The California government pushed the strategy that caused this in the name of environmentalism, and will be blaming climate change to avoid accountability.

@@Makabert.Abylon Yeah... this is _a_ problem, but it is not _the_ cause of these issues. As Radagast mentions, wildfire in California is inevitable, and is absolutely a keystone to their local ecosystem... All we can do is mitigate the human cost of this through innovation and controlled-burn maintenance. No, what we have here is a culmination of factors all intersecting in what amounts to a perfect tinderbox... A trifecta if you will. Firstly, the current drought has indeed been devastating, normally by this point in the windy season there is nearly 4" - 5" of rainfall in the last 4 months -- this year it has been 0.2", or less than 5% of the usual rainfall. Now consider the geography of LA, being that it sits _right_ in a basin on the coast with the Pacific ocean on one side, and major 10,000ft+ tectonic uplift on the other (Santa Ana Mtns)... The coastal winds come in from the easterly direction, while the mountains on the other side results in dry, katabatic winds blowing in the westerly direction (colloquially known as the "Devil Winds") until they meet and duke it out right over the city. This almost results in a close-circuit whirlwind that spends much more time circling the city. Though, I did hear that there were major cuts to the controlled-burn program last season, so maybe you are onto something.

We got a significant amount of rain early in 2024 which encouraged the growth of many small plants and brush, which then dried out throughout the year, giving the fire a lot of fuel that can easily catch. Then the winds up in the mountains got up to 100mph making the fire spread extremely fast and the high winds made it extremely difficult for aircraft to get up to the fire to put them out. Just a vicious combination of factors.

Regarding "not being able to clear brush" and how that relates to "laying waste to the biology of the place"; preventative burns reduce the severity of wildfires AND improve ecosystem diversity and integrity. The problem is that California's policy is "no fire is good," where the native Chumash people regularly burned those very sames mountains and valleys until colonizers put a stop to that. And now we get regular, intense, and unstoppable wildfires. Also, to all the electricians commenting, wishing you and your heart only the best in your recovery.

The problem is that the window for controlled burns is very narrow. Too wet and you can’t get the bush to light at all. Too dry or too windy, and it can easily get out of control. We have the same problem here in Australia. It’s not well understood that you can’t just go out and start burning things. Planning for controlled burns is challenging and carrying them out demands a considerable quantity of resources. So, when conditions are unfavourable, it’s often not simply a case of coming back tomorrow. Resources might be diverted to emergencies or limited by the need for maintenance, other commitments, or any number of other things. And now with climate change, the burn window is getting narrower and narrower. We’re sleepwalking into a very dangerous situation, as we can see now in LA.
@robertlopez6430
@robertlopez6430 25 күн бұрын
California is also facing the most extreme drought in recorded history. That makes clearing dense areas of brush much more challenging. I still have the pictures. It's both really impressive and absolutely terrifying how powerful nature can be. Us humans seem to have some sort of instinct to go and see the aftermath.

Hi Guys. Thank you for the video. It is more useful than most of the news. I worked on Mt. Wilson in forestry for a decade. There were precautions that could have been taken to prevent the spread. Most notably, a green belt, a line a vegetation that is maintained as public spaces like parks that separate the brush and chaparral from the communities. We also need to control vegetation around homes and structures. Things like palm trees and Italian cypress send out large ember casts that burn other structures. Palm fronds act as a Chinese lantern and blow fully lit into structures. Most importantly, folks need to harden structures. Close the eves, remove flammable/combustible vegetation, furniture, firewood, and trash from their home and structures. Be prepared with a checklist when leaving that includes things like closing all windows, shutting off the gas, and keeping access clear to the home. I lived and served in Altadena for a decade. My heart is broken. We knew in the 2009 Station Fire the risk and vulnerability of Eaton Canyon. It last burned in 1994. It missed fires in twice since that. If you get a chance, please go to Henninger Flats. Best kept secret in LA and an amazing film location.

Exactly!! So much that cold have been done to prevent or at least lessen the impact of the fires. While it's not easy and cheap undertaking to place power lines underground and do forest management, the cleanup and rebuild is going to cost so much more , just maybe no loss of life either.

@SawdustAndAsh I was a helitac fire fighter in Canada and you really hit the nail on the head. Municipalities, State/Provincial governments and insurance companies need to start incentivizing, demanding, and requiring better wildfire protection. So much has been done to protect against fires inside of structures but little for fire outside. Fire breaks, green space, FireSmart landscaping and building envelopes, and prescribed burning would reduce the severity of these events.

This needs to be told a 1000 times over. As a person that is not living in a high risk area for natural disaters, it is incredibly difficult for me to understand why these areas are populated to begin with. If there are systems in place that are known to mitigate risk to at least a somewhat reasonable level, then sure, I guess people who just cannot fathom living somewhere else and is willing to take on the risk without outside help can do what they want, but if those systems are known and not in place, WHY?????? Force people to leave the area, at this point I don't care about the loss of property, I care deeply about a mislead population and external emergency responders put at mortal risk over what? Funding? Politics? Ignorance? Sorry for the rant, it is just hard to digest.

Are fuel reduction burns a thing there?
@SRocinante
@SRocinante 26 күн бұрын
@@russellclark2651 They are supposed to be, but there are a few issues. California pollution regulations make it hard to get permits for controlled burns(fire creates CO2). Poor past handling of brush means that there's a lot of backlog to get through. Various environmentalist groups fight hard against clearing of forested areas or burns of any kind. And water rights in california are really messy rn, so southern florida is kinda perpetually in drought if it isn't actively raining.

The stuff at ~10:00. Did the government (Newsome, Bass etc.) "cause" these wildfires? Absolutely not! Did their policies make these wildfires MUCH, MUCH worse then they needed to be? Absolutely! There are so, so, so many examples of their stupid policies making it so that these fires WOULD be worse, when the fires did eventually happen. First, and the thing that is the most egregious, because it's been happening for several decades at this point, is the TOTAL lack of controlled burns. You mentioned how the mountains are covered in brush, and people can't get up there to clean up that brush. The way to deal with that problem, to keep the area from becoming a tinderbox, is to have much smaller, much more controllable "forest fires". Other States, and other places around the world do this all the time. It's a well understood part of responsible forestry. And, in fact, it can be good for the forests as well. There are some trees (which are common in California) that rely on fires for their reproductive cycle. But, California has had a ban on these controlled burns for years (I think decades?) at this point. This is THE biggest reason that California is a tinderbox. Secondly, there's lots of other, and more recent, policies that Newsome and Bass *both* have made that made these fires worse. Cutting the fire-fighting budget, sending "excess" fire fighting equipment to Ukraine (which, as it turned out wasn't actually "excess" at all). Getting rid of dams and reservoirs of water that could be used for fire fighting (as well as just *general* water usage). Opposing the creation of *new* dams and reservoirs. Opposing and/or stopping other water infrastructure projects. So, did the government cause the wildfires? No. But: Is the destruction caused by the wildfires at least partially their fault? Given their policies and past actions, I'd argue that the answer to that is a resounding "YES!"

Yeah absolutely. The other side of this equation is that the very corporations who are responsible for exacerbating climate change are the ones who receive the benefits of government policy, not the public services or initiatives that help combat it.

We also can not forget all the other disaster that have taken place recently and those communities that are still struggling to get back on their feet. Place's such as Maui and North Carolina. FEMA is under resourced to handle the scale of these disasters. This is the time that we as Americans need to come together and help ALL of our brothers and sisters who have been effected by these disasters.

I'm sorry but covering for the local government is kind of sad. As you mentioned wild fires are nothing new in California. This is a predictable situation. Throw in one additional aggravating factor and a containable wildfire becomes a natural disaster. It's the government's job to monitor, plan, and prepare for these probable events. Sure, you can't blame the winds on anyone, but you can blame the budget cuts, the understaffing, the lack of a real plan, the water situation, the lack of proper management, on the people whose job it is to manage that. Sure, it would be a ridiculous undertaking to "rake the leaves" on the side of a mountain.. but that is a fundamental misunderstanding of wildfire management. They don't need to take the entire side of a mountain to help manage and control wildfires. It's ridiculous to assume we aren't able to tell when a specific area is becoming over saturated with fuel and a risk of a uncontrollable wildfire is high. With stuff like drones and satellite imagery we have the tools to monitor and manage on a more targeted level based on risk. There are also other methods that can be used for management. Controlled burns, fire lines, targeted clearing etc. When you have such a long history of fires, and it's so predictable and probable, it's impossible to stress how important it is to have the proper staffing, and a proper plan for both management and response. I get that there are certain people out there that simply want to use this as a political attack, but don't go the other direction and defend the officials that draw from one of the largest and most wealthy tax bases on the planet that CHOSE to not keep your best interest in mind.
