I've been feeling like something with me was wrong for years because I genuinely couldn't understand why people would colour block their calendar and why I couldn't keep it on the long run, every time. Then, I had some self reflection and just like you, I just came to terms that colour blocking as well as other productivity tips are just... tips. Just because something is common doesn't mean it's the only option. Things can be effective for a lot of people but on the internet you find more videos related to certain topics because they get views and because they are what appeals to the most, not because those are the only things that work. I am very practical and pragmatic and I found that noting myself the reasons why if I do something I better be doing it as a habit, I "trust" myself more than blindly following a method I saw someone else using. So much like you, I had a list of habits I wanted to build on notion, and for every habit I had a column explaining why it worked for me and what would I accomplish by building that habit. It would be something like "Wake up every day (even sundays) at 7:20 -> you get enough sleep and your brain is more active early morning -> you get to have the entire morning for you without being extreme and waking up at 6" (note: I did that for 6 months and couldn't find the difference). Overtime, I figured that I didn't need visual reminders anymore because this system became just how my brain works so no need to take notes, but it helped me a lot to understand what I really like to do, why some of my ways to the things are different and it was extremely useful to understand when i needed to fix something. For example, maybe I would think that waking up at 720 made no difference with waking up at 630 but after let's say one month trying, I would understand that that extra hour was necessary for my brain to switch and wake up and so I would update my "why" and deeply understanding what's best for me and the reason behind it, made building and changing habits so much easier and less stressful. Thank you for this video! Excuse my essay but I really feel this topic lol

I can very much relate to this way of thinking and doing things. The more structured I feel like I have to be, the less likely I am to actually start what I need to, or even finish - the pressure just does the opposite and takes away all my motivation and desire to work and create. As you said, I always manage to get things done and well after all, so it really makes you rethink the way how we treat and approach productivity in general. Great video Lana, thank you for sharing! :)

This is a great example for the difference between being efficient and being effective. Efficient is getting any given task (whether important or not) in the most economical manner possible. Effective is doing the things that take you closer to your goals. Most of productivity is trying to get us to do stuff faster and better, even if it's not the most important. While efficient is good, it's useless if not combined with effective work.

Work can become play, in a sense, where the self dissolves into what we are doing and we enter flow, but we can’t plan, schedule, or put parameters to make that happen. When you watch children playing, they will continue playing at some singular activity until that activity naturally comes to an end, but they don’t put “meta”-parameters on when that will occur. I truly believe all work can and should be like play, like how we experienced it as children. Appreciate the video

I can relate to what you said about habit trackers. They have helped me at different times in my life, but I have to take breaks from them:)
@user-ng9pn9lg2p2 жыл бұрын
I relate to this, and am productive in a similar way. I have never got in on lists, trackers etc. Whilst I like familiarity and no unexpected changes, repetitiveness that comes with a strict routine and then having to log it makes it a chore and therefore, I avoid it. I too, like to zone in for hours at a time in a task instead of chipping away at it. I used to feel guilty if I only spent one day a week 'working', but like you say, I would spend like three days leading up to that thinking, researching, being curious etc. For me, lists and trackers just add to the amount of 'goals' that must be achieved and I prefer having fewer big goals to tons of little ones. I get a better sense of satisfaction achieving something that took me weeks or months than teeny daily tasks. I don't like to track habits. If I still am doing the thing I started a couple months ago... Boosh.... I have a new habit lol.

o my god! you just told me the thing that I've been experiencing these days. That the moment you get an idea about doing any work and you put pressure on your brain that hey listen kid you gotta do this like this or that which will require you things to learn and implement very carefully etc. you put a decent load on your mind. and it really sucks the fun out of it. Instead just feel good about that idea that you got it and envision yourself completing that work in upcoming days. then in the follow up days try out things that will help you to get knowledge about your idea. that's all!

It was soo important for me to hear! I have just been thinking about it today. I'm the most productive when I just allow things to happen, when I trust the flow of my mood and energy and inspiration to get me to the point where I want to be. But when I try to change the flow or transform it, nothing useful happens despite pressure, dissatisfaction and waste of energy. It's cool to understand what size is yours and stop putting someone else's clothes. 😍

I am so grateful for you sharing the way you work, I work exactly in this way as well although I’m just finding out about notion. Same with habit tracking, does nothing for me but I do struggle with sticking with things and being consistent with new things I know I should do but avoid doing like working out. Thank you for sharing this because there is a belief that people that work like this are procrastinators or disorganized but we just work SO much better when we can get into focus mode to get it done. 9 times out of 10 that’s right before the deadline. Also, it’s true, it gets done well and I’m rarely stressed out. Love the idea of using notion. Will try.

I saw multiple people making videos about that kind of productivity. I relate so much to the way you describe your... brain i guess. Im messy, random, get random bursts of energy too, work out of passion and not out of habit. Even after watching these videos, Ive been working on an exact opposite kind of system than people like me described works best for them. I think I too should stop forcing myself into that weird productivity mold that works only for a certain type of person. I get joy out of it for a certain period of time but after a week it just fails me.

There are so many different productivity systems out there and while I certainly agree some systems work great for others and not so good for different people, it’s also good to note that we ourselves change, our lifestyle and environment changes, and so a system that may be working great for a while may also eventually need to be changed. Remaining flexible is the key. Also….I love Notion! Second brain right there!

I'm a psychologist and I teach my patients who have problems organizing their activities how to use the matrix and they have found it to be a very good tool. The fact that you share your experience about the challenges you encounter in scheduling activities and teach other strategies is very enriching for many people. I'm learning from what you share because it works for me and maybe it could help my patients. Greetings from Mexico.

Well, in my case, nothing works for long term, whether it's strict schedule I try to follow or just use deadlines or any other way like Eisenhower matrix. Anything that I try to follow, if it is a new thing or something that I'm trying again after a long while, I'll be excited and follow it for the initial few days and then it disappears slowly. So, I just keep bouncing between different methods from time to time. Also, there are long periods of time when I don't follow anything and just end up procrastinating or wasting my time and feeling guilty afterwards unless there is something new and exciting to do in which case I just put myself in that deep with state and forget everything else. 😅

It seems that the world is set for a 24 hr circadian life style that repeats the same every day, this is (surprise surprise) a very male oriented point of view. For at least half of the population, this isn’t the most optimal approach. You should look into it, it is so interesting and eye opening!!! 😉

I love seeing creator's notions like this, and ironically despite being pretty advanced there are some things in this life os I thought could be better. I've been using notion for years, and going to eventually release my templates, but I digress. The way Lana has it setup is multiple pockets of databases or pages, and there lacks (at least from the small bit I viewed) a cohesion. Now to be completely fair it is actually pretty difficult to make a life os that is all ever connected. I'm still fully working on it myself, I even talked to Thomas F and August Bradley about it too, as there isn't a way to merge calendars yet. Although my point was for Lana, is that she could probably find a way to merge her databases, then use separate views in multiple pockets (i.e. calendar, task list, content list, journals, etc). Then everything could be in one DB, allowing for a more intricate connection. Just one example :) I love her videos

Thank you for saying this. For a long time, I've felt like this chaotic person because I don't do things the way, other people share or teach. I'm my most productive on the weirdest times and when I want to do something really, I always get it done, in time. Even though for that moment I put a bit of pressure on myself, I know I feel good when that is done. It's the same BS when people talk about getting up at 5 AM and workout because that is what "successful people" do. We all are wired in our own little way, and we all should just do it the way that works for us and put too much emphasis on what the norm should be. That same goes for the topic of work-life balance.

I try to figure out WHY. If I have any anxieties, I make a note of them. If there’s noise, I try to find another spot. If I am not interested in the task, I just try to power through and if I feel lazy, I will take a break. And sometimes, maybe even ask for a deadline extension. It’s only human to feel unproductive. It’s normal. Nobody can function at their 100% all the time.
@merkisruiz31202 жыл бұрын
I’m starting to accept that my brain is such that I have a broad range of interests and often, excitement towards one of these seizes me and if I don’t take it then and there it’ll be gone for a long while. On a more practical note, getting out of the house is crucial. Even if it’s without a plan that’s more than intending to sit at a cafe for an hour. This often results in a few hours of solid productivity and even creativity.

Nice. I am also very intuitive and spontaneous/ inspirational, but have the practical/ logical side too. I think we have to be careful not to let apps run us more than us running apps, only to extent they are useful , or we actually had a need in the First place/ not just because it's available, as a rule. I've never quite gotten a fully satisfactory organizing system, but I use my phone calendar and phone "clock" (android) to notify me to do this or that at certain times like appointments especially but anything need being done. It's better than a calendar reminder because it's more like an alarm I can't ignore like a more subtle calendar notification beep. I do have a architect day job, so I need these "alarms" or else I get so caught up in my workaday tasks, I would forget. And written lists are a pain since I have to keep it with me shoved on my pocket. My phone is always with me. I don't even have a computer at home. I can do anything on my phone (and can remain on my couch). If I start developing a health coaching business (I'm a cert health coach), then I'll probably have to get laptop. I too like to keep it simple, less truly is more, and we definitely don't want to waste time on unimportant and unnecessary things, hence minimalism. Automating bill pay or monthly product orders also really helpful to declutter. I also spend a lot of time on my bank of America spending and budgeting app, to also "keep my shit together"😉

I usually work from a 'to do' list although if I have to do something that I see as a chore I tend to leave it to do other things. However, when I complete something I don't like I tend to feel good for doing it ! A problem I often find is motivation when something isn;t urgent .... it gets left until it is urgent !

Im very similar. I work much better on a checklist rather than an hour by hour calendar. I have a learning disability which led me to get extremely stressed about having to write papers for school, so I’d stress myself out so much having a time or day blocked off to do writing assignment that I’d end up not writing anything for hours. Like you I find deadlines to be more efficient for me, but I also include a checklist because I find it rewarding to check things off.
