Guys set up asking 1.5-3x of any sold comps history wise is wild. That’s what I call traveling museums. Those dealers aren’t there to sell they are there for the camaraderie. Had a conversation at the last Shipshewana show with a dealer had 3 Bench autos was asking $130 each. Said he was “into them for alot”. The average price on them was about $70 range each. I just gotta walk away from those guys.

Funny you mention that, had a similar situation on Day 1 that I didn't record. Guy had a Bench auto (SGC 9.5) that raw normally sells for 60-75. I asked for the price, he had a sticker of 200 on the back and proceeded to say his best was 175. I really don't know where these numbers come from sometimes.

Guys like that try to catch the “dumb” uneducated, newby. They’re going for 70, sticker for 200, then take 175 making the buyer feel like they got a deal, when they ripped off. The dealer is laughing inside after making 100. 😂.

Then they say “I’m not eBay” or “you get to walk away with the card instead of waiting 3-5 days in the mail”. I get dealers need to make money and have travel/table fees, but that kind of mark up is ridiculous!!

Sticker it for $100 and take 80 or 90. Dealer makes $$ and moves inventory. Buyer pays about what he’d pay including taxes and shipping.

I've noticed that the Vintage dealers have always been and are always higher than current market prices. Even in 2018, 2019, they wanted 50% more than ebay prices. The only time I find good deals on vintage is when a dealer has a mixed case with modern. It means they want to make money and aren't just trying to display their collection. I've actually completely given up on buying vintage at shows due to these dealers. Why would I pay more for a card (50-100% more) at a show when I can buy it online for less.

Spot on assessment. A good number of all vintage dealers are always really proud of their cards. I'm sure it took immense time and effort to build up that inventory. However, I'm not convinced their intention is to sell it. I do place a small premium on being able to inspect the card in person rather than zooming in a scan, that only goes so far though.

Great meeting you! That was kind of my expectation going into this show regarding pricing. A lot of the dealers there aren't as motivated to sell. Not all, but a lot lol

This was my experience at this show last year. Never going back. These doofuses that tell you they are "into it pretty high" might as well be saying "sorry buddy I'm waiting for the biggest sucker on earth to buy that card". It would be interesting if a show had a few people walking around checking dealers on their values. No reason to have someone at your show if the only thing they're offering is screwing over some unsuspecting customer.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. The thing is...I would hope nobody would blindly spend $250, much less $2500, on a card not really knowing what it is or what it's worth. Especially in the Information Age where sales data is usually in the palm of your hand if you have a phone and an internet connection. Maybe that's wishful thinking though.

Elly De La Cruz will get hurt or go into a major slump which many players his age do and that card will take a further dip. My prediction is that dealer will regret not selling the Elly.

As someone who collects raw and that slabbed dilemma is very real, but the way I look at it, with the hobby so big and so many selling platforms, you'll find it again. Plus Volpe went from .426 to .286 in a few weeks and he hasn't impressed me and believe him to be simply mid.

I kinda figured that card got up over 2K at one point last summer, he was the hottest name on the baseball side of the hobby. I'd venture to say the dealer probably bought that card back then.
