The status of Northern Cyprus has become a recurrent issue especially during the recent talks for Turkey's membership of the EU where the division of the island is seen as a major stumbling block in Turkey's long road to membership.

Cyprus was a Greek colony for many thousand years now.... When Turkey decided to INVADE and DIVIDE this beautiful island in two parts, they also killed MANY Cypriots! There' s no any country named ''north Cyprus''. Cyprus is ONE, UNIQUE and totally GREEK! History doesn't change, the only thing we can do now is to Unite Cyprus into one and both sides live in peace under Greek Protection as it MUST be! I am totally convinced no matter what you all gonna say that guildy nations like Turkey will pay

it was pre planned by the turkish government in the 1950's the turkish cypriots and greek cypriots were friends and got along, everything was fixed, there were people sent to start conflicts in certain places which caused a stir. Not only did greeks suffer from the turkish invasion but turkish cypriots suffered also they were removed from there homes with force and moved to the north

The UK and USA wanted bases on Cyprus, but the Greeks would not accept it, and rightfully so! The only way for these 2 countries to have bases there is to seperate the island and have bases on both sides so that they can "keep the peace". That way, if any trouble arises they can take one side and keep their base. That is why they still support the division, it will help them to fight in the middle east! This is Greek land, and has been for thousands of years. This will not change.

@Gold50s Good job with the CyGrGay thing...must have taken you some time to come up with a creative response like that. Cyprus is not Greece, but it is Greek. Just like how Crete is part of Greece, Cyprus should be part of Greece. It has been Greek for thousands of years, and it should remain so. I don't see why you are giving my comment a thumbs down. It is unfortunate to read all those hateful comments. You cannot expect to see the island united again under the aegis of mutual distrust. On the other hand, the island was invaded because of the stupid initiative of a Greek Cypriot leader who had a very dark past, which suited well the intention of the military dictature in Athens. Castastrophy ensued and the innocent ones, as usual, pay the dearest price for the folly of a few. And, besides, I wonder who entitles the old colonial power, the very same guys who separated a "British" Gibraltar from Spain and still keep large areas if Cyprus as "eternal" British bases to come and give advise.

If they are united, it will be BRIDGE for more Turks to come as transit to Europe,. That will be understand by Europe,t hats why Europe don't want Turks in Europe, and the world don't want Turks to be united ,ever ,Turks have just dream, to be united, and to be in Europe also just a DREAM, only,.

Well, Dragan, leave it to the Cypriots to decide what they want to agree among themselves. As for Turkey, it is a great country and nobody hates her. Mustapha Kemal called "Attaturk" was one the world's greatest political leaders. His victory, which we celebrate now, at Gallipoli, is something memorable. As is his generosity in victory (that is why New Zealand dedicated him a monument of remembrance). There are many Europeans, you may include me, who would like Turkey join the European Union. Turkey is in NATO and his role during the Korean War is memorable. A different story is the Armenian genocide (my niece`s great grandfather, which I knew, when he was almos 100 years old survived the Syrian desert death march) is, like the Japanese cruelties during WWII, something that still need a sign of historic repentance.

@AgartaliVaiz..5 The conditions of law under turkish independance was that Greece or turkey could enter ONLY for the expressed purpose of "reinstating the state of affairs", of which the turks rounded up civlians and tried them under turkish military massacres, and NEVER LEFT. On August 14th, as peace talks were taking place in Geneva, and president Clerides asked for 36-48 hours to consult..the turks violated the conditions and attacked again..taking MORE than they asked for in Genenva.

During the late Bronze Age the island experienced two waves of Greek settlement.[37] The first wave consisted of Mycenaean Greek traders who started visiting Cyprus around 1400 BC.[38][39] A major wave of Greek settlement is believed to have taken place following the Bronze Age collapse of Mycenaean Greece from 1100 to 1050 BC, with the island's predominantly Greek character dating from this period.[39][40] Cyprus occupies an important role in Greek mythology being the birthplace of Aphrodite an

@MrJason8109 Occupation is a funny matter to you is it ? For your information, Turkish colonists from the mainland are beginning to outnumber Turkish Cypriots, who formed about 18 % of the population at the time of the invasion and have been emigrating for some time, and Greek Cypriots (80%) voted against the plan because of those 40.000 FOREIGN troops remaining on the island without any guarantee that they would leave the island after reunification.

@Cyppyrotechnist That's an easy question. It's because of the Cyprus Convention in 1878. Here the Ottoman Empire gave the British empire control over cyprus for the time being. And when in 1914 they left they left it with lot of christians (Greek-Cypriots). These thought it was their territory and so began the division of Cyprus. So originally Cyprus belonged to the Ottoman Empire (Turkey). And I conclude that actually, although they are in the minority, it belongs to the Turkish-Cypriots.

Even after independance, the turks were given more of a share in goverment than their population constituted. 30% of civil service jobs were given to a people that constituted 18.3% of the population. The invasion of Cyprus by the turks was done with largley American weapons, of which the turks continued invasion after ceasefire was delcared(resolution 353).

The Autonomous Republic of Nakhichevan (Azerbaijan) has issued a resolution recognizing Northern Cyprus' independence, but Azerbaijan has yet refrained to officially support this decision due to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.[30] The European Union considers the area not under effective control of the Republic of Cyprus as EU territory under Turkish military occupation and thus indefinitely exempt from EU legislation until a settlement has been found.

revin hatol CYPRIOTS!!!?? When one mentions a certain people as a nation, there appears at least one dominant character (religion, ethnicity, language, culture, etc.) in that people. What is the religion, ethnicity, language, culture of this "the" island "nation" pre-1571 and post 1571? Forget experts even beginners know that there is no "the" "nation" in Cyprus island. Pre-1571 it was "CatholicChristian/OrthodoxChristian", "Frankish&Italian/GreekCypriot", "Latin/Greek", "Latin/Helen"; post-1571 it was "Islam/OrthodoxChristian", "Turk/Greek", "Turkish/Greek", "Turk/Helen". There occurred lots of conflicts, struggles and wars for the last millenium within the people of Cyprus island since the people of Cyprus island is not a "nation". This way, Makarios (1st President of Rep. of Cyprus) emphasized the absence of "the" "nation" of Cyprus island!: "Donkeys: the only true Cypriots on Cyprus; there's only one living Cypriot in Cyprus and that is the Cypriot donkey" Makarios:"Donkeys: the only true Cypriots on Cyprus" Makarios: "Donkeys: the only true Cypriots on Cyprus" Makarios:"There's only one living Cypriot in Cyprus and that is the Cypriot donkey" www.thefreelibrary.com/Wild+Karpas+donkeys+at+risk+of+extinction.-a0217265508 cyprusgreenparty.blogspot.com.tr/2008/04/greek-and-turkish-cypriots-join-up-to.html core.kmi.open.ac.uk/download/pdf/44363.pdf%E2%80%8E

Hi, I really love the island of Cyprus and that's why I'm posting, not because I want to criticize in all caps. I don't think Cyprus is Greek or British. I also can understand why Turkey wants to keep it's hold on the part of Cyprus they inhabit. Cyprus has a strategic placing that would benefit Turkey if a WW3 broke out, It's a great tourism area, and There is no more land on earth to be claimed. Also, Cyprus was an easy target in the 1970s.

Response 2: Both YOU and the Phoenician decendants use(or used) the Arabic alphabet, and had(or do) use the Greek and Latin alphabets. Why?. Because BOTH the turkic and Phoenician alphabets were less developed. The earliest Greek alphabet pre-dates the Greeks developement of the primitve Phoenician(linear A), as does the Minoan on the island of Crete. The Greeks developed a sophisiticated alphabet from primitve sources, while turks didn't do more than "adopt" others.

Noone could have stopped her, not even USA(well if they really wanted, ok but they wouldn't send hundreds of their soldiers to certain death for neither Greece, nor Turkey). After taking the whole island, Turkey shoud have given the half of it back to Greeks in return of the whole world recognizing northern cyprus.

Hundreds of years after the initial settlement of Greeks, a small Turkish-Cypriot (i.e. mixed) population began 2 grow never exceeding 17% at the time. Such a minority is irrelevant. It is like saying UK is Pakistani & they have right 2 rule over the UK. They don't. They have right 2 live fairly but that is all. Cyprus never was Turkish.

@SuliemanTheGreat Lesbos/Mytilenia is actually a popular tourist destination for gay-women from around the world to vacation, So when the islanders made their complaint known to European journalists , They went out of their way not to offend that special group of tourists also known as lesbians whom the islands economy depends on LOL! the two most famous Lesbians in history are Sappho and Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha :)

@AgartaliVaiz Perhaps you read slow..but I just did. Running world shipping in the "private sector"(a concept that turkey hasn't been able to profit from..LOLOL) means "citizens" investing and profiting from building ships, transeferring goods, and making a great living. Tourism is a natural result of having a beautiful country and rich history..which thanks to us, you profit from in "toursim", since we built everything in turkey..LOLOL

LETS BE REALISTIC. GREEKS AND TURKS CAN'T LIVE TOGETHER BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING COMMON BETWEN THEM, TOTALLY DIFFERENT LANGUANGE, RELIGION & CULTURE, ALSO THEY TRIED TO LIVE TOGETHER IN THE PAST AND DID NOT WORKED, THEY CAN BE A VERY GOOD NEIGHBOURS THATS AS GOOD AS IT CAN GET.

@AgartaliVaiz..1 By all means, let's compare positions. 1.)GReeks constituted 80% of the population of the north the turks were invading in order to "protect" the turkish population. Gee, how "righteous"..LOL. Cyprus has been Greek since antiquity, and turks only entered the island via invasion in 1571. Article 20 of the treaty of Lausanne gave the turkish population the choice of going to live in turkey as turks, as stay in Cyprus as British nationals, so their was no "turkish" identity(1923).

@AgartaliVaiz..6 turkey has been found in in violation of international law and human rights violations by both the UN and European council of human rights. As for history..the turks in Anatolia are an invading race, who increased their population by forced interbreeding with the natives(Greeks, Armenians, etc.). The Byzantine empire ALONE in Greek history is 1,500 years; not to mention Constantinople, Smyrna, etc. are Greek cities, and Greeks have been living in Anatolia since antiquity.

@Gine012 I don't know who you are but only bad organization in our military was Gladio, and american dog organization which made some big assasinations and also they have killed a prime minister of Turkey:özal. Every nato country used to have a gladio organization in their armies, whichs duty was to arm civilians in soviet occupied cities against a possible soviet invasion of europe. after the cold war nearly all nato countries managed to destroy their gladio, but turkey couldn't manage it.

My friend it was a metaphor. I did not mean that there is gonna be an actual Annan Plan for the kurds. I meant the same mentality it would be applied there as well i.e. equal sharing power despite numbers. Freedom does not compel any organization my friend. Now turkey rushes to give some rights hopefully that the kurds will settle down, but they wont too late. A century of suppression is a lot. So they want at least autonomy. Man everyone wants to live under THEIR nation-state.

@AgartaliVaiz Really????. You had LOST land due to most treaties, and only have nation at the intervention of three nations(France, Italy, bolshevik Russia). Furthermore, the 35% of Cyprus was aquired during ceasefire, and ABSOLUTLEY in violation of the "treaty" of Cyprus' independance. As was pointed out, turkey's intial attempt to occupy Cyprus resulted in getting their asses handed to them by the small Greco/Cypriot resistance. About 3% of the island. Stop hiding behind the U.S

Cyprus is European? Have you looked at a map? Cyprus pretty far away from Europe and Greece and it is right below Turkey. I wouldn't say Turkey is an European country but at least it has territory in Europe while Cyprus doesn't.

The ships that Greek companies bought are made in Turkey. We have one of the biggest ship building facilities near Istanbul. We have resources? What resource we have that you don't. We are living here 75million of us you are just 12 million people enjoying the aids coming from EU every 6 months. By the way "Superiors"? Do you think anyone is a superior to another? If you have a thought like this I am not continuing debate with you. Good luck in life
