I'm biased as I have the blue SS 40mm Spirit, but this watch really is incredible value. In real life that dial is so 3 dimensional, very hard to capture on film. I've had it for over 6 months now as pretty much my daily wearer and I still find myself staring at the dial, watching how it catches the light and the depth of the stepped ring, applied markers and hour diamond cutouts. It's not perfect for reasons you highlight in the video Teddy, plus the non colour matched date wheel and lack of micro adjust on the SS bracelet annoy slightly, but for the price point I can totally forgive it. It's a fabulous watch from an historic brand, I love it.

Made up my mind to get the 40mm Titanium next month or so. Absolute superb looking watch, and very good value for money. Love the omission of the date window in exchange for the overall symmetry. I have a soft spot for black and gilt finished watches, my bb58 is such. The only decision is the bracelet or black nylon strap, which I’ll know more when I actually try them on. Another great informative video.

I actually prefer the longer lug to lug, makes it worthwhile for a bigger wrist whilst keeping in line with the flieger look. I also hate having to remove the bars to strap in some thicker nato's too like the canvas ones. Win win for me, I'm buying one.

I’m not a bracelet fan. My Spirit is on a good strap. The dial pops! I love how the diamond shape on the bow and arrow second hand (dipped on a more legible red), becomes perfectly congruent with the diamond recessed cutouts as it passes over them. As far as I’m concerned, IWC is not a “step up.” Instead, it is IWC that falls behind in the Spirit’s artistry. Two grand watches from Longines: the Spirit and the Sector!
@rickjason215 Жыл бұрын
I don’t own an IWC, but the movement on the Mark XX is far superior. 120 hour power reserve and an 8 year warranty. The IWC is not a good looking watch.

I love the idea of having "all types" of watches in my collection, I still haven't really bought into the idea of field and aviation style watches. That being said, the finishing on this piece does make it a good candidate if and when I finally sell myself on the idea.
@flutterstone1281 Жыл бұрын
There are a lot of complaints about the lug size, but I don’t think it’s a problem. It is simply important to buy this watch in the proper size. People used to larger watches which have been fashionable in recent times will find the lugs big, but sticking strictly to more traditional sizing will yield a great result with this piece. Smaller watches seem to be making a comeback. Maybe this Longines Spirit is a little ahead of the curve on that score. I have a 7.25” wrist I wear this with a 40mm case. It fits beautifully and looks magnificent. You just have to think a little smaller with this one.

Yes the 37mm in blue is on my radar. Tried a 40mm but wasn’t 100% on the date at 3 and it was borderline too long lug to lug. The 37 looks like it has the quick release bracelet too.
@flutterstone1281 Жыл бұрын
I love your videos, Teddy, but I have a modest suggestion: When you model watches, provide a view from the shoulder down to the end of the hand. I recently sold a 37mm watch on eBay and took some pictures to accompany the post. The wrist shots I included in the post were completely deceptive. They made the watch look enormous. Then I held my phone's camera as far away as I could and managed to include most of my arm up to my shoulder and the picture gave a much clearer sense of the size of the watch. Everybody loves wrist shots. They provide a lot of information about the quality of the dial but distort what the watch will ultimately look like when actually worn.

Nice review and some awesome close up photography. Long lugs are a feature of pilot/field watch though, so can't complain much. IWC's offer the same experience in terms of lug to lug. I tried on a couple of these Spirits a few days ago. The 42mm was definitely too long, but the 40mm seems right even on my 7.6" wrist (much depth). It has to be on the bracelet for me, it looks far too good on the watch to just get a strap, though the Longines Nato strap version is quite nice with the titanium buckle as well. Looks better to me than a leather strap with a gap to the case.

Only thing is wish is that the SS version came without the date window. It's ok for my 40 mm version since it replaces the 3 , but I realy did not like the 42 mm because it cuts off the 3 on the dial.

Hello there! Great comprehensive review as always Teddy. I have the 42 mm Chrono in blue and it's more impressive than many much more expensive pieces. I have a faint suspicion that the spirit collection was initially designed with 42 mm in mind. The L2L which everybody's complaining about is great when the case is at 42 mm. L2L and case diameter are in complete harmony. At 40 mm they were kinda 'lazy' and 'tight' and left the lugs untouched for tooling cost saving reasons. Just my humble opinion.

It’s out in the open now. Longines is gearing up for an upmarket move. They won’t release a banger such as the Spirit for nothing. Spirit is gonna serve as a friendly foe for the Black Bay and will aim to reach Tudor level or GS level soon. I like Longines’ trajectory at the moment.

How do you think this and their flyback watches compare to Tudor? I tend to get some snobbiness against Longines from dealers who sell both brands. Okay Longines movements are mostly made for them by ETA, but to counter that Longines has much much more history, so kinda on par overall? Or Longines is a whisker below?
@bobbydazzler178010 ай бұрын
Mine must have been made on a Friday afternoon as it ran consistently at +9s per day on a full manual daily wind over a week and had poor finishing on the lug ends which looked a mess. The buckle on the leather strap had some dings on it. Back it went as I’ve had way better experiences at a fraction of the price with Tissot. Good looking watch but if you look closely it’s not value for money.

Finally you mention the weight of the watch. I agree that the lug-to-lug is not proportional to the diameter. Furthermore the crown seems to me to be overly long (almost as if added as an afterthought). It is a handsome dial though.

The steel one needs to lose the date. I hate how it removes the 3 ... at least they didn't half cover the 3 like on some other watches. That looks terrible. And honestly, how many people can even see the date? Pretty much no one over the age of 40. Also, I would prefer silver in the dial on the titanium vs the gold. I guess they do that to make it look more premium, but I prefer the silver Rolex Explorer look. Having said all that, these are great watches.

I really like the looks of the 40mm Spirit, esp. the classic dial, but what really prevents me from buying the watch is in fact the horrible bracelet with its male end links. And once I get a watch in Titanium I also want the respective bracelet for it and not being forced to wear it on a strap instead. What also bugs me is the lack of the date function on the Titanium version. So sad to say, but this one is definitely a No-Go for me!

On the wrizt you barely notice them. Only when the light catches are they noticeable and often not all 5 at once. Definitely needs to be seen in the flesh inmy experience. I also like the fact they are a direct reference to older watches in their history. Not just a design feature but a nod to their past.
