Friendly did have an Awful Awful. Both Friendly and Newport Creamery licensed the name from the original inventor of the drink, based on New Jersey. The licensing agreement stated that they couldn’t use the name if either of them opened a store in NJ. When Friendly decided to expand to NJ, they renamed their version to Fribble. They also eventually tinkered with the recipe, too. Newport Creamery eventually bought the rights to the Awful Awful outright.

I remember it being a great place to work and the food and ice cream selection was second to none. Very fresh and tasty. I have fond memories of those days. No massive SUV’s. No cell phones. No internet. And especially very little social dysfunction. We would go into Baltimore and visit the museums and library and weren’t afraid of being abused for “parting your hair the wrong way”. We looked different because character is what’s a part of a persons make up. Not how many tats, body bling or hair style that defines folks today.

It was a real family affair where my mom also worked and two other families (sisters, moms, daughters) pretty much made up the whole crew. It was a really fun job and I knew many of the customers by name. The menu was somewhat limited but the food was pretty good back then. All of us knew how to wait tables, prepare the food, wash the dishes, restock, ring up customers and take inventory plus many other duties ... albeit before they added all the new menu items. I left 4 years later to continue school but will always fondly look back on those days. Just one correction to the narrative. The Jim Dandy was a super sized "banana split" but they still had the regular version as well. 🍧🍔🍟

The only Friendly's I know remaining anywhere near me is the large Friendly's in Morristown, NJ. Two or three decades ago virtually every town in the Garden State seemed to have a Friendly's. The first one I ever patronized was in Rutland, VT in the 1960s. They had terrific breakfasts (great pancakes), and you could always count on a tasty luncheon item like a tuna melt or a BLT. Their ice cream wasn't the best IMO, but they were a good place for a quick meal in generally unhurried surroundings unlike the "fast food" eateries. All the changes in ownership and poor management must have done them in, because now they're virtually extinct in the mid-Atlantic region.

I grew up in the Springfield area (Belchertown) and took a tour of the original Friendlys and a tour of their headquarters in Wilbraham MA that was in the early to mid 1960’s on a school field trip. I liked their ice cream and the restaurant food was pretty decent. I liked their sundaes and Jim Dandy. I’m in Florida now and I think all of the Friendlys here are all gone.

Used to eat there all the time as a teenager in the early 70s. Sometimes I couldn't afford to leave a tip so I'd leave a poem on a napkin. I had a recurring dream where I took refuge at Friendly's during nuclear war. I still sometimes make cheese burgers the Friendly's way, a grilled cheese with a burger inserted inside.

Visiting my father in Ohio I will always remember the Reese’s pieces Sunday. Omg that was the best. Willoughby Ohio. Sadly That store is no longer there . They are missed. I was able thankfully to take my wife and kids to the location in Harrisburg in 2010. Da gone how time has flown.

Anyone remember "Dipper Dan's"? We had one in Lexington Ky (In Lexington Mall!). It was a burgers/dogs/ice cream place. Also, they had real "bubble gum" ice cream. That means little bits of bubble gum in the ice cream. Not good. Imagine eating ice cream with bits of gum that you can't swallow!

I had one in my hometown. It just became a gourmet pizza restaurant. Ironically the service at the old Friendly's wasn't very "friendly." I still loved the place though. It became better in the 2000's. They were always nice to my kids.
