I'm very much a fan, and would certainly agree that Mr. Sowell is an interesting and excellent thinker. To me, it seems that he has observed, pondered, reflected, and connected a broad spectrum of facts and formed them into wisdom and common sense. He is also very gifted / practiced at expressing this wisdom so as to make it understandable. I greatly admire his attention to word choice with the moderator. He seems to diligently pursue accuracy of expression. It is a great contrast to most politicians and speakers who will deliberately or at least carelessly inflame, rather than expound.

This man is so much like my father, who told me when I was a young man seeking my “first real job.” I complained that I didn’t get hired, because I was black. My father stopped me immediately and said, son, you didn’t get the job because you don’t have the skills. It had nothing to do with skin color. He went on to say, that he wouldn’t hire me for the position simply because I didn’t have the experience needed, although I had the education. He scolded me and said: “make skin color the very last reason to use for not getting something you want.” I’ve lived by that motto ever since, and I’ve taught my daughter to do the same.
@jasondashney
@jasondashney 2 жыл бұрын
Even if you are wrong and skin colour really is the reason you aren't getting the job, the only path forward is to try harder and get better skills because there literally is no alternative. All you can do is all you can do so the reason why becomes basically irrelevant.

They indicated that racist blacks are quick to pull the race card at any and every opportunity. Evidence is easy: just listen to Joy Beyhard, Whoopie Goldberg, Stacey Abrams, etc. Blacks say that Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Angela Rye are the worst. We also flooded East Palo Alto with police. I was part of a five county task force that placed three and four times the normal number of cops on the streets so the law abiding locals could see they finally had some protection from the thugs. We had pages of names and pictures of people with warrants and parole violators so we could sweep them off the street. The average response time for calls dropped fpr a half hour to two minutes. We stopped every car with a vehicle code violation because many of them either had warrants or had been committing crimes. Within two weeks, EPA went from multiple gunshots on the streets each night to maybe one or two, and we got to those, in many cases, before the person firing the gun had a chance to hide it. People were once again out taking evening walks, and kids were once again playing in the parks. I know from personal experience that defunding the police is a terrible idea.

Thomas Sowell addressing in the 1990s the SAME issues that persist in 2021. Sowell is talking about, the Leftist elitists, “who ignore the facts or evade them.” Organizations, the “the leaders” of black movements like Jesse Jackson in the 1990s, BLM today, get rich on “symbolic” programs. Nothing changes but they get to feel superior and that they’re on the “side of the angels.” But, nothing changes, and BLM are now millionaires. Conservatives care about black communities. Sowell says there are no “solutions.” We want real answers to help the “majority of the population in black communities” who “are not criminals.” If the activists would work with us we’d be able to lower crime, poverty and murder rates. But, they’re getting rich off talk, symbolic programs and demonizing the Right.

@sterilepickle544 Politicians almost always sell proposed changes as "solutions", but nothing is all-upside. There are always downsides. There are always unintended consequences. So that must be explored to know if the tradeoff is worth it. The most well meaning changes forced bluntly and widely on society more times than not make things worse. It's a warning to be wise and thoughtful of how we execute our demands. Hearing the other side and debate is practical to exploring tradeoffs.

The difference between peoples is culture. Underneath (below the cosmetic variations), we are the same based on a shared genome. The best advice we can give humanity is to begin adopting elements of the most powerful culture until they merge (a multi-generational project). I would recommend the one that has boot prints, used car lots, and abandoned picnic sites on at least two celestial bodies. They are the ones looking to the future with the most intent to get there.
@just-a-fella3212

But being responsible for oneself comes from a realisation that one is responsible for oneself. Not everyone has reached that realisation, even in adulthood. Usually the realisation of individual responsibility kicks in in young adulthood, providing the growing individual(s) are not been brainwashed to believe they are not responsible for their self, and providing one does not damage one's own psychosocial development, for instance with drug use which halts one's psychosocial development at the age when the drug use commences. It is not as easy as just telling people they need to take responsibility for their self. They need to have acquired that realisation, and they need to want it too, that is, not shy away from it. People shy from all sorts of things, and there is no greater burden than the burden of freewill and the responsibility that goes along with it, so it is no wonder that so many would rather deny the existence of freewill and responsibility, and instead resort to blaming others or circumstances. And even if they do accept responsibility, they also need a certain level of intelligence to solve their life problems, for intelligence manifests as problem solving ability, and life is becoming more complex and difficult for those with lower intelligence to manage. So I do not think the problem is as easily addressed as Mr. Sowell here suggests.

@herrbonk3635
@herrbonk3635 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rajaat99 Not true in all senses or contexts though. For instance, if the rich gets richer due to increased productivity (instead of stealing, via taxes or other means) that usually means that the poorer people get it better as well, everything else equal. This is a fact most socialists ignore. They often belive its always a tradeoff, economically. A zero sum game. (Although not even Marx or Engels said it was that simple.)

@@herrbonk3635 Yes, but the statement is still true. Increased productivity is still a trade off. Why was productivity increased?
@herrbonk3635
@herrbonk3635 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rajaat99 It's usually increased due to new or enhanced production methods invented (or new "technology", as many people say today). Sometimes due to a new scientific breaktrough or discovery. Some major such events historically could be when we discovered how to plant food, later how to (genetically, without knowing it) manipulate the plants to give better yields. Or when the English invented the steam machine, or the French invented the automated sawing machine, or the Germans and later Americans invented the modern computer, and so on. The practical applications of all these scientific discoveries and technical inventions sure usually meant some trade offs, but they still *solved* major problems! The vaccines being another example of that (mentioned in the video), saving millions of lives. So Thomas Sowell's thesis is much more true in politics, wars, or perhaps in isolated economic terms, than it is in technology and science, or even culture. I still agree with a lot of things he says, indeed, but *just* trade offs was too simplistic.

@@jonaskoelker Blinded by her politics she was, but steadfast in her willingness to listen to opposing viewpoints that tested her preconceived notions. Oddly enough, I appreciated her candor and enjoyed her intellectual stimulation. Never would she allow fellow students to regurgitate talking points like they do on cable/main-stream media. With her, you could babel about any of your opinions. Her’s always leaned towards the left, but you were *never* entitled to your own facts. Maybe this is why she was so enamored by Sowell? On another note, I don’t remember my time in school being so divisive as it seems today. Who knows? Maybe if I was instructed in today’s woke environment, I’d would be marching to “end white supremacy”. I guess my former English teacher wouldn’t agree with that take either. Seeing people’s political stances back then, I know we were somewhat divided, but not merely in the manner we are today. That’s why I don’t assume most people see themselves as “the anointed”. Rather, we are all too fast to speak and just as slow to listen-especially with viewpoints that aren’t our own.

I was 6 when this interview was done. We lived in the poor part of town neighboring another town which had major gang problems with drugs and shootings. Dad was stuck working for a crappy chemical company and mom was dealing with assholes from her job at a public tv station. They didn't beg the government for help; they saved their money and we moved to the countryside and they got much better jobs. These days we are doing well. Parents are retired with money in the bank and 401Ks along with getting social security while I (now 33) am working overtime at a job that is needing more workers but people seem more than happy with welfare from the government than actually working.
