The National Ballet of China once again brought to stage its original ballet, A Dream of Red Mansions, on February 16th at Beijing's Tianqiao Theater, offering viewers the grace and romance of ballet, as well as the ethereal atmosphere of classical China. The well-known story of the Red Mansions was narrated beautifully, furnishing Jia Baoyu's extraordinary and unyielding love with an artful flourish.
NBC's Principal Dancers Chen Zhuming, Fang Mengying and Coryphée Yu Xiaoting stepped up again into the roles of Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai respectively, powerfully depicting the angst-filled romantic bonds among the three lead characters and their rueful life story. On stage, youthful exuberance bloomed in the form of glorious dancing, and the crushing hand of fate was channeled through the dancers' tiptoed precision. The NBC Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Resident Conductor Liu Ju and led by Associate Concertmaster Liu Xiaohuan, lit up the stage with their live performance once more. Every member of the audience could not help but be swept up in the passionate performance, and the full house often burst into rapturous applause.
