A dress that will always be in style- Making a pinafore based on an arts and crafts dress from 1906

What is it about certain styles that just.... never goes out of style?
I used a vintage pattern to sew a pinafore based on a 1906 Arts and Crafts movement dress, that was itself steeped in historicism to create a look that will (maybe?) be stylish forever.

I love this! Nostalgic note: 60 plus years ago, my mom sewed me a white underdress and red pinafore from a commercial pattern. I cannot for the life of me remember what happened to that special outfit. The underdress was a new thing for me, never to be repeated, but that was my favorite part. Thanks for sharing your sewing adventures. I can say honestly your mistakes don't even hold a candle to mine!

What a special dress! I hope wherever it is it is still bringing someone joy! (That’s what I always tell myself when I think about all the amazing clothes that have mysteriously disappeared from my life in one way or another) As for mistakes, I’ve made some doozies, some of them so much so the project had to be reimagined, ha.

Perhaps it's the practicality of layering that makes it interesting: you only need to wash the blouse frequently and not the dress. You can swap the blouse for more variety too, idk. You can also adjust the warmth level by picking something very light underneath, or warmer like a thin sweater.

I think your right, we are in the middle of a NEW Arts & Crafts movement. I always tell my friends never underestimate a good vintage 1970’s pattern 💕✂️

I own a 1970s dress made from either that exact pattern, or its twin!* The straps do attach at the waist, but they cross on the back. That makes them more secure/less prone to slipping off the shoulders. That is also why the straps are shown to go in towards the neck in the model drawings. * Made by a friend's deceased mother, so I can't ask her what pattern she used.

I remember that pattern--the two ends of the neck strap overlap and button together.

The only difference between this and those I grew up wearing is that my Mom crossed the straps in the back so they wouldn’t slouch off my shoulders. Love it and want to make one for me, actually more than one 😀

Another awesome mashup (reimagining?). I just recently tried that fabric covered button technique on an ugly blazer, thinking I was so clever and no one has ever done this. I didn’t even remove the original buttons before covering them. At least now the ugliness looks intentional…..😂

Haha- now that’s efficient! Covered buttons can definitely go very ugly very quickly, but maybe that’s their charm?

Its interesting to know who do you watch, cause all sewing people I watch include in their videos mid project crisis and talk about their problems (or even mistakes) in that point and their way to deal with it. Thank you! I think I can be very “in my own head”, and in every project there is a very non-storytelling-friendly moment when I question what I’m doing as a maker/artist/human. I love when other makers share the “this isn’t turning out the way I thought” or “I bit off more than I can chew” moment, so I thought it may help someone out there who is doubting not just the thing they’re making but the entire journey they’re on if I shared the “who am I?” Moment.

I'm not sure how long the straps were meant to be re: the pattern, but my assumption would be that they are supposed to cross and button to the opposite side of the back panel

The original pattern had them super short, maybe 8”. Crossing the longer versions in the back would have been super cute! Next time!

I think I had a pinafore quite like this when I was a little girl in the 70s. The straps on mine crossed at the back and the belt tie was threaded through the buttonholes in the straps rather than them being buttoned onto the back. Maybe yours was intended to be the same? Though I think there were two parallel buttonholes on each of my straps rather than one, so must have been a different pattern.

I tried to sew a very similar dress back in 1979. We called it an overall dress back then. It turned out to be a total disaster. I've been inspired by early 70s longer vests that more or less were blazers without sleeves and by 1960s vestees. Been thinking about how I want to do them and what design alterations to make to suit myself, then working it into my current wardrobe.
