Wanting to expand your homelab, but the thought of another aging Westmere or Sandy Bridge server got you worried? Welcome to the modern era of servers, courtesy of the HP DL80 Gen9... a Dual 2011-3 socket system, featuring DDR4 and PCIe 3.0. But should you add it to your server rack?
But first... What am I drinking???
From Anchorage Brewing, it's the What Mask DDH IPA (8.4%). Tropical juice explosion in a Hazy IPA. Definitely recommended.

Thanks Jeff for this video! I had been looking at this server for a while now and recently bumped into this video. I took the jump and now have it up and running with TrueNAS Scale. Now, for posterity in case anybody ends up on this video (seeing that the internet content on this DL80 is limited) then here's what I did... I didn't want to use 2 disk slots for the TrueNAS boot system and had read that this server cannot boot from NVMEs - what I did is purchased the following: - 2 x M.2 SATA SSDs - 2 x M.2 PCIe adapters I then connected the M.2 PCIe adapters with an SATA cable to the 2 SATA slots that are on the motherboard and used them to install the TrueNAS mirrored boot-pool onto.

@andrewnoonan4044 3 жыл бұрын
@@judman13 Believe me, I have been through that process. Lol. It really depends on the update. If it is a critical fix they do generally let you access. Bios updates are the most restricted and they don't always give you access to the latest of those without support. Which is a pain as generally the upgrades that allow greater memory support than the specs tell you are in the later updates. But yeah card firmware updates you can generally find a way to get. I keep a Server 2012 install specifically to do firmware upgrades on HP cards.

These servers are great. G9 and onwards also has that dumb RMRR fix in a BIOS update so they can be used for QEMU/KVM virtualization with PCIe passthrough, unlike the G8 and previous (there is a fix for the older cards but it's **very** tedious)

While I get that the RTX Voice was needed to make this thing tolerable for a video, I'm sure a lot of your newer viewers are probably scrubbing through the video listening for a sample of what it sounds like while running. Unless of course they don't know what an actually server sounds like to sit next to. I myself have been trying to decide on something that's house friendly. Maybe that's something you could add to your homelab series, how loud the budget options are against each other. I'm sure the original 3 you made would be the quietest given that they're consumer grade fans/PSU, but I very well could be wrong. Still, I appreciate you loading up your rack to showcase this stuff for us enthusiasts 😬 Thanks!

Heat up an exacto knife and you can cut the back of the pci-e slot and then put a graphics card in with minimal performance loss and still have the use of the upper pci-e slot (by putting the graphics card in the lower slot). Also, you could use a pci-e bifurcation cable to 2 x16 pci-e with the x16 pci-e riser you ordered. Lastly, you could get 2 more additional pci-e risers for the other 2 expansion slots that are available.

I managed to pickup an HP ML350 Gen9 tower server for $100 bucks off of goodwills auction site. It WAS a pickup-only auction, but I managed to get a 3rd party shipper to ship it to me. Came with 128GB DDR4 ECC memory, dual e5-2620v3 CPUs(I've since upgraded to dual e5-2650v3 CPUs. The server CAN take V4 CPUs which I eventually plan on putting in, but due to the current power constraints of my home, I'm kind of limited on what I can do to this thing. Currently running unraid with a couple VMs, but I plan on migrating my plex server over to it very soon! :D This is the nicest piece of enterprise equipment I've owned & I'm super excited for its potential (I have it sitting in my bedroom with the fans at their lowest settings & I can sleep comfortably & work from home with no issues)

I just got into a dl380p with dual e5-2660 v2 cpu's that idles about 100 watts. Has 128gb of ram and I added a 10gb sfp+ card. Only mistake I felt I made was to get a SFF chassis vs LFF so i only have 2.5" drive support instead of 3.5" which is what I had already. So I bought a couple of cheap ssd's to throw in it. With the low power and the drives I chose it is actually very quiet and I am pleased with my purchase.

I really like the form factor of the server. Pretty shallow, and I find that for most people I converse with in small apartments or houses the shallow server chassis are the only option until you get some larger space. If you plug both PSU's in you will get a lower power draw. When the system sees there should be two available it ramps up usage on the one to cover the difference above what even a single PSU will draw. This will also spin the fans on the server down a bit.

Be aware, those servers only want to use HP branded drives and some aftermarket ones. With most aftermarket drives the firmware does not register the temperature correctly (intentionally) from the s.m.a.r.t. status from the drives causing the server fans to go to 100% which is A LOT of noise and uses a lot of power.

@@jeroenvaneekeres9339 The drives themselves would be responsible for any temperature sensor problems but on G8 the tray is used for otherwise authenticating the drive. I use generic drives in official trays and it doesn't complain. The drive temperatures are visible correctly from the controller's config utility. However, iLO (which is responsible for the fan speeds) always reports the max drive temperature as 35C. I'm not sure why but the end result is that it works fine so I don't really care.

I have its little sister the HP DL60 four-bay. Overall, it's a good server. But it's got a bunch of quirks that make setup annoying. It has four drives bays but getting all four recognized is exceedingly difficult. It requires a special SATA drive that is hard to locate and the process of installing it into the operating system is obtuse and not well documented. I managed to get the firmware updated once, But when I tried to do a new update six months later it wouldn't mount the USB key (The same USB key I used for the first update). Since it's deprecated by HP (About a year after it was announced, which is ridiculous) I can't use their online tools to update it. I also would have to pay for a service contract of several thousand dollars. I reconfigured to use a two-drive SATA configuration that doesn't require drivers and installed Redhat Enterprise Linux. Works well but SABA configuration is difficult. For some reason, my windows 10 cannot see the server and Redhat won't let it connect. so I am using USB keys to move data around.

I have a DL380 Gen9 and while the power costs are eating the hair off my head, it's a really good machine. Just annoying that all the extras you kinda have to buy are so expensive, because you often can't get them used (such as the GPU Enablement kit, those things are usually something you add into a server and then never rip out because you already threw away the old heat sinks etc. so these never really end up in the second hand market and you can only buy them new, and here in Germany the new price for just the GPU Enablement kit (2 CPU heatsinks and a handful of cables) *starts* at 400€, which is kinda asinine. But other than that I really like how verbose the iLO is, even if for some stupid reason HPE still doesn't directly measure CPU temperature, instead using sensors placed near the CPUs, so their fan control is really really wonky and can cause CPUs to overheat, if you don't put the fans into jet plane mode)

You _bought_ an x16 riser? If you don't need peak performance you could cut off the end of the x8 socket so an x16 card fits. I've done this myself and it works well as long as you don't accidentally sever any of the traces on the board. Guess how I know.

Correction - according to the ebay listing the $148 version does NOT have a Power Supply. Also would there be any issues running an Adaptec ASR 71605 raid controller? Other than it not being HP... They are available on ebay for $50. And they are low profile...

Installing a non HP expansion card (Quadro P2000 in my case) ramps up the fans on gen 8 servers. Is this also the case in a gen 9? Something to be aware of, if you plan on running a video card in your server.
