I absolutely love Frankenstein, it’s one of my favourite books. I adore the writing and the way “otherness” is depicted is just heartbreaking and so relatable. The fact that the movie just makes the monster out to be…a monster…without a heart, is a tragedy. A beautiful, beautiful book. I’m so glad you liked it!

I love Frankenstein, I read it at school in year 10 and 11 it was one of the books I did my GCSE on, such a great book. I remember I used to be so excited for english class because we analysed it in depth and discussed it with the whole class. We also had to learn many passages by heart because we weren’t allowed to have the book during our exam and we didn’t know which section we’d be tested on so literally everything about that book and it’s annotations and analysis is engraved in my mind. I love it so much.

Frankenstein is genuinely my favourite book, I've read it 5 or 6 times. I definitely recommend reading 'the original 1818 text' (it's a penguin edition), as most editions of Frankenstein are the later 1831 edition that was edited due to criticism received upon its initial release, most of which was due to the fact that people believed the themes of the book meant that Shelley was immoral. It's so interesting to see the changes that were made.

People are always surprised with the plot of Frankenstein (as was I) because their screen adaptations (which is what most people know) are so different from the book. I long to see a faithful adaptation.

Frankenstein is my favourite classic!!!! The most ill adapted classic in that not a single adaptation of the book is anywhere near close to the book's content, shocks me everytime I think about it 😂

I finished reading Frankenstein for the first time today. It got to me so bad, I was sobbing at 5am :')))) I had the same impression you did in regards to realizing I only had the pop culture notion of the book, but in reality I didn't actually know anything about it. I didn't expect it was going to be so tender and gentle in the pain it portrayed, despite the horrors. The chapters where the monster tells his perspective got me cryingggg really badddd. I also found out midway that there are two versions of the story, the second version was published in 1830 with edits that address criticisms it received during its time. I'm glad the version I read was the original one from 1818 (in the original, Elizabeth is his cousin). I feel like the changes would make me feel differently about the book. I'll probably read the second one just to know how it differs.

I recently got obsessed with Our Hideous Progeny, was kinda hesitant at first bc retellings can be so hit or miss but this one is a Frankenstein retelling with *Victorian dinosaurs* so how could I resist 😂 Would highly recommend for some more gothic autumny vibes 👌

Hi, I am still at the start of the video. But I am literally going to the shops to get Starling House. I have loved previous works by that author and I think her writing style would suit a gothic novel really well. Plus, one of the moods I am in is gothic and I feel like now is a good time for me to read that. I am currently reading Nettle and Bone and The Last Tale of the Flower Bride, as well as a gothic classic fiction collection called Penny Dreadful's Sensational Tales of Terror. I have recently finished Yellow Jessamine which I deeply loved, and after watching The Fall of the House of Usher I want to reread every story and poem of that show even though I have recently finished Poe's complete collection. I am also in a classic mood and a witchy mood

Even though you didn't love it, the way you've described Starling House really appeals to me! I would highly recommend The Once and Future Witches, also by Alix E Harrow - absolutely brilliant and definitely feels like an adult novel. Gorgeous, eery atmosphere and intricate plotting and writing. Also really want to read Woman, Eating!

So so so happy that I'm not the only one who STRUGGLED with Modern Divination. In theory it should have been my new obsession, rivals to lovers, dark academia, hidden witches, small town vibes, a slow burn romance and a mystery... But although the prose was beautifully written, it was SO purple (really form over function!) it got so confusing and it's put me in a slump. I should have dnf'ed as well :( I'm going to read Foxglove next to see if that can help me get out of this slump!

Frankenstein is one of my favourite classics. I did actually study it at university (majored in English Literature) and that only increased my enjoyment of the book. I reread it every few years. National Theatre Live (UK) put on an amazing production of Frankenstein, which was filmed and broadcast in lots of places, I think in 2013? You saw two performances and Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller rotated roles as Dr Frankenstein and the Monster. Both were so good in each role. I’m not sure if it is still available to stream anywhere. I originally saw both productions during the initial cinema release and it was streamed again on You Tube as a fundraiser during the pandemic (2020/2021). Best adaptation I’ve seen to date of the book, though I also have a fondness for the Kenneth Branagh film version. I haven’t read any of the other books you read in this vlog though I’m tempted by Starling House - I generally like Alix E Harrow’s books.
