This is a Far Too Brief History of Peerless.
From making washboards to producing some of the highest quality luxury automobiles of the early 1900s, Peerless held on to conservative design for too long and in the depths of the Depression decided they could make more money brewing beer!

Big John, always plugging the old old school cars of the teens, 20's, and 30's. Much respect. The great depression of the late 1920's, 1930's killed off a lot of American independents.

I find those old brands interesting and frequently beautiful. It is also fascinating the names of people who come up over and over again, across companies and models.

Thanks for the feedback. As I've done more of these History videos I've increased them to nearly 100% images. That's tough when you're talking about some cars from the late 1800s! :) Unfortunately I can't go back into older videos like this and just add in more images. :(

Jon, I have been watching auto related videos for many years. I know all of the hot channels at the moment. I just want you to know that I consider your channel one of the most enjoyable and freshest take on the genre. Thanks Jon, a very interesting story. Admittedly I have very little knowledge in the car companies of this era so it was quite informative. Recently I’ve done a little reading about Overland, later Willys-Overland…that might be an interesting video to consider doing in the future.

It's kind of on the list, but a bit intimidating as it expands into the Willy story, of course the Jeep, etc. It gets big and complex. :)

I've thought about that many times. I just don't think I'd do it any justice or add anything new when there's so much other history (and at least one movie) about that story.

IMOP, Peerless was a deserved member of the 3P's from about 05-15, but was largely irrelevant after WWI. The move 'downmarket' didn't help, and they traded on whatever residual respect the name held. Pierce, stumbled some what inthe 20's but came back with the late 20's 8 and then produced one of the best V12's out there, and right or wrong, they never abandoned the top of the market. The eventual extinction though of all of the 'greats' - at least those not backed by a major corporation (save Packard, which also moved down, and probably should not have grabbed for volume with the 110 - a step too far) was sadly, inevitable.

"capitalism at its finest" /s... They did make some beautiful models, but when you throw short term strategies into the mix (stock manipulation, fights for controlling interests, etc) it isn't much of a suprise that the bottom fell out. Ceasing production was probably the better decision, given the absence of any passion for what they were producing.
@AllCarswithJon
@AllCarswithJon Жыл бұрын
And that was my takeaway. I fully expected a story of a company that couldn't weather the Great Depression, but I was particularily surprised at the "we'll make washboards! Now we'll make bikes! Ohh, how about CARS! Eh, too much trouble... let's BREW BEER!"
@ianperkins8812
@ianperkins8812 Жыл бұрын
@@AllCarswithJon Well, given that beer is a fairly recession-proof product (disclaimer: I worked in the beer industry many, many years ago), I'd say that choice is entirely in character, the most capitalist choice they could make and Carling is still a thing, so the decision panned out, I guess. My Godfather always kept Carling Black Label on hand.
@AllCarswithJon
@AllCarswithJon Жыл бұрын
@@ianperkins8812 Oh, I agree. It kept them in business and the guys working. But still, you want to celebrate the passion for a vehicle... and to them it was just "the commodity" they were making.
