You did such a wonderful job capturing little Stormy's life with his Mommy Stella, right through his final days to the end of his little life. Your capture and portrayal of Stella as a Mother on her last days with her baby boy, as well as her loss, was done beautifully and most importantly, very respectfully. This was such a sweet and sad story and you absolutely nailed it. You are very thoughtful, great job. 💓 from 🇨🇦

I wept and wept through this last ride of Stormy. Stella was heartbreaking. I love how much you honor these complicated and sentient families with your great compassion and artistry. There's something so deep and piercingly painful when an animal who'd been in your life--even on video, halfway across the world--suffers and dies. And your ability to pull the great natural beauty of HK into it also touches me deeply--having lived in the midlevels and gone to the littles islands around, this spaciousness is breathtaking to me. Thank you for what your give us. I just wish I had been following your gang when I was a new mother--I could have learned so much from Reddy, Rudy Stella, even Gypsy about being a good mother.

AM and Monkey Sentinel sent me. First time here and watched your final videos of Stormy. And I was deeply touched by your incredible insight into Grief. I have lost 2 adult sons from accidental fentanyl poisoning in the past 2 years. Now I find so much comfort and humanity in this group of monkeys and the truly kind and respectful persons who make it a mission to share. Without kidnapping. This was beautifully edited. You never let that baby down. Mother Nature can be cruel. But you tried. All you ever have left in the end is knowing you did your best. You never walked away. I hope Peace has come to this year. I’ll be watching.

Awesome heart wrenching story well told. This poor little baby was doomed since he was bitten by something very large with sharp teeth! That had to be one strong healthy baby to survive a attack like that and live as long as he did. It's so sad to know that even if you had taken him to a Vet, providing there is one qualified, he could have lived a long time but never again in the wild and he wouldn't be happy away from his mom, family and nature. Yet, you’ve told Stormy and family’s story with incredible strength, highlighting the nature of Rhesus society and showing how deep and complex their family bonds are, even in the face of a disabled family member. It’s quite a moving series and if there were an award for series like this, you certainly deserve it. Thank you, for sharing the story from beginning to end. Stella and Stormy both fought to the bitter end to hang on to one of the most beautiful love stories ever, of a mother and her child. JW, thank you for sharing their story. Thank you for caring and loving Stormy to the end of his life and even now in your heart. JW, I am sure it is so easy to become attached being there in person to see everything first-hand but it's another thing totally to show your heart through your work to someone that is thousands of miles from where you stand and to make them feel as though they are standing next to you seeing it for them themselves. JW I sat spell bound from about 1 a.m. to the very end. I saw the post and I knew sleep could wait for me. I cried and actually thanked God for taking him as you so said: "The wind has taken him to another journey. I was so pleased that you were slipping food to Stella and Stormy. You were a God send. I have enjoyed your videos as much as I have Arroz's. You guys do an outstanding job. Please accept my heart felt thanks and I will share with you the pain from Stormy's passing. In my close to 200 hours of study on all the different primates I have learned that some mothers will carry their baby till it falls apart. They will sit and call by the hour for months. The dedication and the pain they suffer is no different than that of our human families. I know as I lost 2 children shortly after they were born. The pain is all the same. In 3 years of following Arroz, and about 7 months with you I still don't understand the lack of some help from a Vet. There must be Vets in Hong Kong. They don't need years of training to help some. I wish someone would please explain why this isn't possible.
@debvit23532 жыл бұрын
Arroz Marisco explained this. Although there are primate vets in Hong Kong, they focus on zoo animals and endangered species of monkey. If they were contacted to treat Stormy for example, as a rhesus macaque (not an endangered species) he would have been euthanized. As callous as it may sound, euthanasia would be the most “cost effective” option. At least Stormy passed in his natural setting, in his mother’s arms.
@wessmith74082 жыл бұрын
@@debvit2353 Some of what you are saying makes some sense. Arroz believed there was another under lying cause. Putting this monkey down would have been more human than seeing it suffer. Having been raised on a farm there where times when an animal had to be put down. It was hard but it was the right thing to do. Stormy suffered much too long. I still believe a Vet could have helped. I keep being told there are no Vets. That doesn't make any sense at all. They fix a number of the females so they can't have babies. So, tell me there are no Vets. At least here, unlike Cambodia & Thailand these monkeys are cared for and have a fine place to live.
@debvit23532 жыл бұрын
@@wessmith7408 Arroz says Hong Kong has a zoo with rare/endangered primates and a dozen vets to treat them. Unfortunately, rhesus and long tailed macaques are not endangered and it’s cheaper to euthanize monkeys that are brought to them. He said, in the past when officials were involved, euthanasia was the outcome. So I guess to the government of Hong Kong, the monkeys of Monkey Hill will either fend for themselves in their own troops or be put down if brought to the attention of the authorities.

JW this is for you. You are amazing human being with a gift to tell a story in a way humans can connected with the most misinterpreted creatures. You also are very brave & wise. I cried not only because Stormy & Stella, but because of you. When my father had his brain stroke, I kept with him until the end and was the hardest thing I done in my life. You know he had only 1 percent to survive but you keep the hope and faith that he'll make it. Many emotions come to you in those last days, even regrets I should had know to take better care or should had giving this or that. It's hard, painful journey, but at the same time is rewarding, because you have the satisfaction to be with the love one until the last moment, and that love I believe that love one felt it until the end and helped him departure with ease, feeling loved. JW what you did is connected a group of strangers from different countries to get in touch with the real side of Wildlife Monkeys we rarely see, even in documentaries. For a person to do that required love, compassion, humbleness, dedication & wisdom. Glad to be part of this community of people who will remember for a long time the amazing Stormy and his incredible mum Stella. The life-force we call 'monkeys' goes on with or without Stormy. He was just one momentary expression of that monkey life force that goes on... and on... and on... as we are of the human life force. Stella will demonstrate that by creating another little one to nurture, teach and wean and our hearts will be warmed again thanks to the work of JW and Arroz over there on Golden Hill. I remember Eckhart Tolle saying "When you ask people what the opposite of life is, they usually answer 'death'. But they're wrong because the opposite of 'death' is 'birth'... Life has no opposite" I find this concept mind-blowing and comforting at the same time :-)

See how on this channel there are normal people who understand that these infants have needs and that the mothers attend to those needs. She nurses him constanly as she should for his age. She is patient and most importanly there arent any overly aggressive females trying to take him to mistreat him. Meeting an infants needs mean a better adjusted infant.
@scottbutkowski58032 жыл бұрын
@@teresacastro1263 Apples to Apples, Oranges, To Oranges. Stormy had special needs, And a troop structure and mother, That allowed for extra attention to be paid to stormy until his death. However, This would not have continued indefinitely, And eventually, Had his injury not been fatal, He would ultimately fallen victim to some form of predation. Stormy made the best of what time he had, And we all loved the little guy, And hoped that he would miraculously pull through. He was Quite different from Daniella, If that is what this aside refers to. At this time I see her demise as symptomatic of a troop with Serious dysfunction among it's members, But I stand by my points made then. Daniella was in most ways the temperamental opposite of Stormy, And her behavior, Absolutely contributed to her demise. To this day I've yet to see another monkey behave the way she did. I certainly never saw anything of the kind from Stormy. Nice to see you again, Teresa.
@teresacastro12632 жыл бұрын
@@scottbutkowski5803 Exactly my point the environment shapes development and temperament. Especially these infants who are highly reactive. Look at the Harlow experiments to see how these monkeys developed when deprived of certain needs. The dysfunction of Dolly's troop led to not only Daniela being extremely reactive but also Brutus Jr, Donny, and Lori. When Maria took over she nurtured the infants and supported the mothers and they get along well and there are no screaming infants. Daniela would have been fine if Maria had led all along. Her death had nothing to do with temperament as a make killed her to mate with her mother. Brutus Jr was the same way during kidnappings and he was not even dragged through the rocks the way Daniela was. Daniela's popularity with the juvenile females and Daniela's and Maci's bond shows Daniela was social and would have had support growing up the way Dana did. I don't see how Daniela's behavior is more offensive than a juvenile female monkey bashing a weeks-old infant against rocks as she drags her by the tail. An actual zoologist said although the kidnappings were normal he had no explanation for the sadistic nature of DeeDee's kidnapping. He used the word sadistic but did not once blame the infant. As to Stormy he probably would have met an early end but there was a video about a female macaque whose lower limbs were paralyzed but the story was that after like 9 stillbirths she successfully gave birth to a live infant. So she survived well into adulthood, not that Stormy would have but he may have. And I am not trying to change anyone's perspective I am just trying to present the facts the way I view them for others who are new to these channels so they don't end up like the people in the other channels I mentioned thinking that these animals nursing is a sin, or that infants are somehow a danger to their troops.
@scottbutkowski58032 жыл бұрын
@@teresacastro1263 Thank you for the well thought out response. I understand what you are saying, And largely agree with it. I however think it goes a little deeper than that. I have long felt some of the breeding combinations in that particular troop led to a handful of infants that were just shall we say, " Off" I have always been interested in knowing who daniela's sire was as some of the other babies right before Marcus took over. To this day I have yet to see any monkeys behave in the manner they did as Daniella and sweet pea and a couple of the others in that troop you could just see it in their eyes they were just not completely there. It can't Simply Be dolly I saw countless videos with dolly was just acting as a typical alpha female. She probably falls somewhere in the middle of the road in terms of how good versus evil and alpha female could be in a troop like that. Looking into Danielle's eyes and Sweet pea's eyes is looking at a wheel that constantly spins. They don't land completely on an object. They just keep spinning and not really paying attention to what they're being told or what they're doing. I don't really count Donnie in this because he grew up to be largely your typical adult male monkey. I never saw any of the types of behaviors I saw in them in stormy. I also believe that while Danielle had the capability of being social, that is not what she wanted and she fought harder than most to get what she wanted from the countless videos I've seen of her straight bullying Dana into giving in. It's almost always and includes Maria when older members of The troop pull Daniella away from Dana because Daniella has overwhelmed her mother. I don't doubt that Maria is perhaps I'm more suitable Alpha for the troop than dolly especially when dd was at the age she was when some of these other monkeys were little, but I did see Maria pick Daniela up and just throw her off a rock. In fact that is the most direct form of aggressive action against Daniella I saw other than when Santra, you know, bit her in half. I almost certainly think there's something to the fact that he was allowed to get so close to Daniella although I know he went between both Amber and amari troops and supposedly had played nicely with smaller animals before that. Daniela what the members of that troop out with her constant antics and in all likelihood it would have just continued to get worse. Stormy would have had a hard time and almost certainly not made it past the time when the juvenile males start to figure things out among themselves, however, anything is indeed possible. Do you by chance know who Daniella's father was and sweet peas I think somebody said Sweet pea's dad was Philip but I am not sure. Thanks again for the insight into these complicated creatures.
@teresacastro12632 жыл бұрын
@@scottbutkowski5803 Dolly wasnt good nor evil she was despotic and in a despotic hierarchy there is no winning and there is a lot of aggression and instances of aggression. Troop members are usually more stressed out and surprisingly enough will break rules more. Maria also helped Daniela in her arms letting her sleep, protected her from DeeDee who tried to take her once, and allowed Daniela to eat with her. Maria also went after her own offspring Karia and Maddix when they were evading Dolly and DeeDee probably as a strategy. Marcus who grew fond of Maci threw Maci in the air a few times, once he cleared her from a rock over a tiny scrap of food. They are animals all of them including infants. 'As to the father I doubt Sweeetpea and Daniela have the same father. One they may be related through Popeye and 2 if not there were different males and Alphas at the time of conceptions. The females tend to be promiscuous and males are less likely to attack infants of those females they mated with at the time of conception. It also promotes biodiversity. Also, Daniela was dropped from a tree, her head was bashed against rocks and at times seem punch drunk, she may have had a concussion here or there. There were also rumors that the VOs were giving her alcohol or drugging her somehow. But really you don't think the tail dragging against the rock and dropping her like 25 feet from a tree is more aggressive than Maria picking her up and just throwing her. Maria has done that to other infants but then she also nurtures them and lets them, nurse. Also if Dana was overwhelmed she would not have kept retrieving Daniela. They would consistently follow her and try and take Daniela with Dana resisting. If Dana did give her up it was due to rank but in many videos, she would retrieve her with Dolly or DeeDee trying to get her back. Also, Dana had Popeye, Jill, and Ashley to rely on all who seem fond of Daniela and Daniela would go to voluntarily. She did not seem to want Dolly's "help". Pulling an infant who is not done nursing only leads to an unsatisfied infant and that is actually more work for the mother

It is a proven fact they have an intellect and emotional capacity closer to humans than most species of mammals. Humans are capable of feeling love, sadness and pain. Yet we do the most horrible things to each other!
