A Farewell to World Buffs - Gorak's Guide to Classic WoW, Episode 21 (WoW Machinima)

The Burning Crusade is almost upon us! But that also means that World Buffs, both a blessing and a curse, and certainly a much discussed subject, are disappearing as well!
With TBC coming out so soon I had to try to get videos done that only pertain to the Vanilla-Classic era, of which World Buffs are certainly one! I had hoped to make more videos (and in particular, make some about TBC!) but this one proved quite difficult to plan, and videos with several characters always take a lot longer.

It's so weird to me, and this happens both in classic and retail and a huge portion of why I don't play anymore. This is how the game evolved or devolved more like. People farm the same shit over and over again so they want it to be as efficient and quick as possible which will in turn make them murder every last ounce of fun in it. But the truth is that people spend the same amount of time playing, so the overall rewards like look or whatelse is kinda the same, so the accomplishment of a single action becomes less and less. It's kinda like if your drug dealer started mixing flour into your kokain and instead of capping the bastard you just start snoring more and more of it, but by now it isn't doing anything to you. So you either stop or you reduce it to a sort of chore you have to do.

This reminds me at the start of the game, when a random guild refused to follow the schedule of the Ony head, because it didn't fit their raid times. The entire server split their Ony raids in as many groups as they could and had 24/7 head up in Stormwind, just so that 1 guild couldn't fuck up the buff schedule. It was glurious and hilarious at the same time.

Its best to find guilds that are not aiming for the meta but rather "what should we do now" kinda of attitude, i love when a guild mate says "can anyone help me at Jinta alor?" and ill probably join even though im 60 and farming some herbs at the moment, i reliesh in the idea of just hanging out and helping someone whos leveling in what i knew were quite an annoying place for meny. But as long as i can chitchat with said person i feel like its worth its waight in gold.

Yeah, its why I left my guild and kinda stoped playing wow.. was looking foward to raids as it was pretty much all I had left to do aside from mythics with randoms (which gets samey after a while despite modifiers), only for the guild leader to basically decide my blood DK would never be a part of raids because he played one already and didn't want 2 of the same class as tanks... or hell, leaving his spot from time to time for others to have fun. This kind of people forgot its a game and about being fun, not a darn job you could lose if you don't perform. And its not like I did bad overall when I knew what I had to do.

And goes doubly true the older a game becomes. In a new game no one knows what to do yet, and people experiment and iterate on the ideas of others to try and improve. It's kind of how i play games myself: looking up builds, picking one that seems cool, and then making changes so it works for me. (be it only because there is some utilities or QoL that arent part of the build and feel too good for me to take out, or because I have to make do with inferior gear) Serves me well in Path of Exile for exemple, when taking the rough idea of a character build that is outdated by several years give me a character that I really enjoy to this day, and still works even as I keep fiddling with it, only using the internet to know what good things can exist and what I should look out for. In older games, it becomes all about copying the one fully tested meta, else you are considered "trash". Experimenting is then seen as a waste of time, as that would be deviating from the meta.

Yup. Leveled a character to 60 and shortly uninstalled the game, lmao. World buffs are not the only issue though. As soon as the phrase "meme specs" became widespread, I started to get a bad feeling.

@@crepooscul I played Druid in classic and I mean Boomkin was basically non-functional, it really did actually nothing in a raid. Ret was terrible but our guild had our one signature Ret paladin because he was the chillest guy and basically our guild's mascot, as well as a Shadow Priest and an Arms Warrior despite them being off-meta. It's not a toxic meta, it's just people know what does not work. some specs in Vanilla are not remotely balanced to function in raids and despite that there were plenty of guilds happy to have their one token Boomkin, Ret, etc because when you have 40 raid slots it doesn't matter much if 1-3 of them are doing 1/4 of the DPS of everyone else. There were no world buff guilds, there was even a guild of all dwarves. There's a reason they're called meme specs, it's because there are just a few specs in Classic that simply do not function properly in a raid environment, Boomkins run out of mana before killing the boss unless other druids are feeding them extra innervates, only for them to still be at the bottom of the DPS meters. Some specs in Vanilla pay the "hybrid tax" (Prot Pala not having a taunt, Ret Pala being terrible DPS in raids, Boomkin going oom in raids extremely quickly, Elemental going oom in raids, Feral DPS being a lower damage rogue, etc) for being hybrid classes, with usually only their healing spec being viable (and Feral tank for Druids, Feral DPS in some raids). Additionally, many of these specs were designed and balanced around PvP, something that still continues even on Retail to a certain extent. Shadow Priest shreds in PvP but runs out of mana too fast in raids, same for Elemental. Enhancement is a PvP monster but bad in raids as is Ret, Boomkin is good in PvP and Feral is especially good. Druids are the uncontested gods of flag carrying in WSG despite being the weakest class overall in top end raiding. Meanwhile Fury Warriors are the crème de la crème of DPS in Classic WoW, yet absolutely horrible in PvP.

"We need 26 max buffed furys to kill the boss" No, you're impatient and want the boss dead in 30 seconds and won't deal with anything less than a speed run to whine in SW

the most ironic part was how everyone was so pissed they lost their wbs, even in my guild, which was semi hc and i ddint care for buffs and ppl didnt care that i didnt have them, when those ppl lost their buffs, there were mad af (random death, over agro etc) so most of them hated getting buffs and then they were fking mad they would lose them early, pure cancer gameplay

I've been playing classic entirely in bgs and questing, I made the mistake of running into a group who were killing the Onyxia turn-in guy to reset it.
