Historian Jerry Apps remembers country winters spent on his family’s farm during the Great Depression and World War II. Apps recalls a time before electricity on the farm, when farmers milked cows by hand and "making wood" was a major part of winter's work.

Mr. Apps is my favorite storyteller ever, and his films are my very, very favorite things to watch in the world. From this Wisconsin native who now lives thousands of miles from home, thank you so very much for these.

I found your stories tonight for the first time and they soothe my being . I was raised up on a tobacco farm in Harnett County, N.C. ,4th generation. Can relate to many things that you have experienced , but in a warmer climate . Enjoy your history, GOD BLESS & thank you .

I am willing to bet, the old man felt those changes in the weather 🌡️ in his bones. I bet he felt the aches in his joints.

13:48 I disagree. I’ve never been so captivated by a story since before my grandmama passed. She was born in 1927 and was a country Jamaican American girl married to a Cherokee Blackfoot and Black born in 1924. And she told the most amazing stories from her childhood. My grandfather was mostly a quiet man. He died at 93 years old. Even though he and I didn’t always get along because of my sexuality. He was a fine human being and a great example of a man. Out of all 13 of my siblings I’m the only one who looks like him😆. I crave these stories told by an elder. Thanks so much for sharing your story mr Apps🙏🏾. Your voice is soothing and stories epic In it’s simplicity.

Hard but good life . But no electricity ... and the house being so cold in the winter ... wow . This guy has a great voice for storytelling . Very sad to hear that only 2% of Americans are real Farmers nowadays ... very disturbing to think about factory farming . I thought a number of places in America were starting to get harsher winters again but who knows when this was filmed . Looks like the fiddle player had the exact same situation with his hand as Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead . And another reason they had less fat people back then ... you hear him talking about walking 2 miles to your friends' house ... probably means you walk two miles back home , also .
