Agricola is still, by far, my #1 game of all-time, but since we filmed this we've tried A Feast for Odin with the Norwegians expansion and that definitely improves the game. It's still nowhere near the level of Agricola for me, but if you only tried AFFO base game I'd recommend giving it another shot with the expansion. #TeamAgricola - Carlo
@Zero0Kenshin Жыл бұрын
I've played, have, and enjoy both. Prefer A Feast for Odin overall as I find there is more varied strategy you can employ. Carlo lost me at 26:09 when mentioning Terraforming Mars. If you are 2/3rds of the way through Terraforming Mars new cards should only be kept (as you have to pay to keep them) if they play heavily into your strategy and you can see them paying themselves off quickly. I will add that the issue you have with nothing to do with cards that don't play into your strategy in AFFO is fixed by The Norwegians expansion. It adds the option to get rid of an occupation when you could otherwise play it to score bonus points. I'd say it resolves most issues I had with the base game and makes it a more streamlined experience. If you haven't played it yet I highly reccomend it, I don't play without it anymore.

Great video. I would say .. if you are gonna spend a whole hour comparing these two games (they absolutely deserve it!) .. but at that point I do think it’s fair to include the expansions in the discussion of which is ultimately the better game. Sounds like y’all haven’t played with Norwegians much but for me this is what places Feast as the clear number one. Team FEAST! That said when I think about which game I could play forever it might be Agricola as I think at a certain point Feast becomes more clear on what strategies are most viable (not there yet but I suspect this could be more possible since the cards are so much less relevant to the broader strategy). Thanks for the vid!

We haven't played any expansions for either game actually! Aside from some additional card decks for Agricola. But Dylann recently got The Norwegians finally, so we'll try it out soon. Sounds like your assessment of your short-term vs long-term enjoyment of both games could mirror exactly how I feel, it just so happens I've played Agricola over 150 times now and I've played Feast around 20 or 25 times. I've lost the urge to play Feast a bit (hopefully The Norwegians changes that) but I still absolutely love Agricola with every play. Thanks for watching! - Carlo

Yeah, they're not easy games to get to the table, but as much as it pains me to say this, A Feast for Odin is the easier one to convince people to play (I think). I play games mainly at 2P with my wife and we are definitely TEAM AGRICOLA. Love how tight the game is, where every single decision is not only impactful, but also cascades down to future actions. There is a certain amount of meanness to it that I really enjoy too. If we wanted to play a Uwe tile laying game, we'd go with Patchwork or New York Zoo instead!
@AllYouCanBoard2 жыл бұрын
Yup, that cascade effect is definitely more present in Agricola than A Feast for Odin. As for polyomino tile-laying, if you like Patchwork and New York Zoo I'd recommend Spring Meadow! Of all his lighter polyomino games, Patchwork and Spring Meadow are the two I enjoy most. - Carlo
@namelessfire2 жыл бұрын
Gotta go with Agricola. The tightness of the game coupled with the game changing cards is unmatched. Although there is certainly room for both on my shelf. Uwe is the man.
@paulszki8 ай бұрын
The tightness of Agricola is what makes it unpopular with my some of my more casual peeps (including my girlfriend) so Feast for Odin sees table time, while Agricola just kinda collects dust because people are afraid of having a bad time. Agricola, despite the inviting theme is very deceiving. People often think "oh I can manage my own farm and grow animals and stuff!" -> No, as a beginner you're constantly on the verge of starving and by the end of the game MAYBE you'll have something that resembles a farm but just when you start feeling good about yourself, the game ends. So to me Agricola is much more of a "Gamer's Game" (especially with the card drafting, which is really the way to play but everyone NEEDS to know how to play the game well) while Feast of Odin, despite the complexity, you can absolutely this game inflict even on new players. And even if comparatively they might be doing horribly, that will mostly be reflected by a lower score at the end but even the last player will have filled up most of their homeboard and an island and generally have accomplished some stuff and feel okay about themselves. Meanwhile in Agricola, a first time player who did badly might be lucky to not be in the negative scores.

I feel like Caverna would have made more sense to go up against Feast due to them both being more sandboxy
@AllYouCanBoard10 ай бұрын
Definitely, but there are 2 reasons we went with this comparison: 1. Agricola is my #1 game of all-time, and A Feast for Odin is Dylann's #1 2. When we filmed this, neither of us had played Caverna yet. I've tried it a few times on Board Game Arena since, but we have yet to play the physical version together. We love Uwe Rosenberg though, so we'll continue playing his games and making videos about them. There's a good chance you'll see an Agricola vs Caverna video in the future and maybe a Caverna vs A Feast for Odin one as well. Thanks for watching! (Also, I love the Hobbes profile pic - classy!) - Carlo

I blindly purchased Agricola and mega-pimped it up before playing it. I spent over $300 between the game, expansions, and deluxe add-ons. I was super excited to finally play the game... *Boy, was I disappointed.* I will never understand why this game is so highly rated. Agricola is OK at best. My group _wanted_ to like the game, we really did. After adding some of the optional rules plus one house rule, the game became bearable. But there are _way_ too many *good* games out there to waste our time with Agricola.
@AllYouCanBoard2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you had such a negative experience with it. Do you think any of that had to do with your expectations being so high after investing that much money before playing it? I realize it's not a game for everyone. I know plenty of people who either don't like it at all or are just indifferent towards it, so no hard feelings about that. For me, even after not playing it for years and going back to it, I was reminded how much I still love it. - Carlo

There is no "heavy competition" for spaces in Agricola because you can't go after only one resource (unless you plan on losing). For example, a player blocked your sheep? Go for the pigs, and wait until the next round when the other player goes for the pigs, and you take the sheep.
@AllYouCanBoard2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you understood the rules correctly, but it doesn't sound like you understood the strategy of the game. It would never really make sense to take 1 single sheep or boar in the round immediately after someone else took a pile of them. If someone goes to one of those spaces, then next round there's only one of that resource there, and if you're taking just 1 sheep or 1 boar with an action, that alone will probably set you far behind. I've never seen anyone do that and win. And your point about there being no heavy competition doesn't make any sense. It has nothing to do with going for one single resource, I think you misunderstood what I said in the video. Everyone needs REED to build rooms and renovate their house. Building rooms allows you to get more family members. So if you're not going for reed and you let your opponent keep getting it, you're pretty much guaranteed to lose unless you have an Occupation or Minor Improvement that helps you get reed in some other way. Similarly, if you're not racing for the first Family Growth spot to get more workers, you're probably not going to be in a competitive enough spot to have a chance of winning. - Carlo

I like both, Agricola has like you pointed out more competition between players. You can block and have to block other players. Odin I feel you more play your own game and not against each other. Agricola is a bit lighter allowing you to also socialize a bit more during the game, While Odin has so many options you are deep in your game that you are not chatting as much with your friends. Now, Caverna will bring team Odin and team Agrigola together. It is a great alternative that combines elements from both.

I think Agricola should be up against Caverna rather than Feast. Those two seem more analogous. I haven't played Agricola in 10 years and I want to play it now that I've matured in the hobby more. I played AFFO recently and I wasn't a fan. I felt it was too much and most of it was unnecessary. I love Uwe's older designs like Le Havre, Glass Road, and Ora & Labora as those are all in my top 50 games. Caverna used to be in my top 10 about 8 or 9 years ago but it has fallen for me over the years (I like but I don't love it like I used to). I suspect that I may like Agricola more now because I enjoy more ruthless games like 18XX games, TI4, heavy euros, and heavy economic games. I'm team Le Havre I guess.

So many people have talked about how interesting and fun it is to play it that I just keep thinking about giving it a go. I thing however in this debate the thing that made me take this side is the idea of showing it to people. Because I like to play a lot with different persons, often times my favorite part is watching the spark in their eyes the moment they get a game and are 200% into it. I believe Feast might be one of those games.

The theme is perfectly combined with the tension of making your farmers eat during the ending of the plague. TEAM FEAST because I don't have a group that will play Agricola enough to truly appreciate it. But Agricola is nice because it frequently pops up used locally for $25 and its box is smaller. I've played neither FYI
@AllYouCanBoard2 жыл бұрын
It's probably good of you to realize you don't have the group for Agricola instead of trying to force it, I admire that. If you're into online gaming at all, you can play Agricola on BoardGameArena for free! You need a Premium account to create games, but you can join other games for free. Sure it's not quite the same as the physical version, but as someone who has played Agricola 100+ times in person, I'm still really enjoying playing it online and would highly recommend it. - Carlo

Team Feast but they are both solid games. Congratulations on 10k subs, keep up the good work.

While I like both games. I think Agricola is the standout for me, for a few reasons. 1.) Price. Boardgaming is an expensive hobbie as it is. So getting a great experience at a cheaper price is always a plus. 2.) Agricola has a crunch to it, that Feast simply doesn't have. It's not just the tighter play. But rather, it feels like a complex puzzle. Where each round I'm evaluating the state of the game and trying to make an optimal play. And due to Agricola's punishing nature, it's highly rewarding when you get it right. 3.) It's not a Feast for Odin. 🙃 And while there are a great number of other reasons one could give. These are the main things that come to my mind. Both games are great. Agricola is greater. 😁 #TeamAgricola

TEAM FEAST here, looks like a much better game and who wants to play a game that can be ruined with one bad play early on

I respect the love for Team Feast but Agricola was #1 on the BGG rankings for years for a reason - over 10,000 people have rated it a 10. Almost 50,000 people have rated it 8 or higher! I completely understand why some people don't like it, and there's nothing wrong with that, but the appeal of the game is undeniable. - Carlo

In my opinion, AFfO is representative of the "modern day euro", with its focus on letting all players always do what they want, with little conflict or worry. A crowd pleaser for the masses that have joined the hobby in the last 5 years or so. But to me, that barely even qualifies as a game. More like a shared experience. Does winning or losing even matter if there was no competition? Agricola is on the opposite end of that spectrum. It represents what it truly means to be a good game. Players groan at moves you make. They have to rework their failed strategies. Wins feel earned and fought for. I'm happy that Uwe produced Nusfjord to bring back this tradition of design. It packs a lot of the same punch into a shorter, easier game. Of course, anyone that complains about (or enjoys!) how punishing Agricola is should have to play the game that inspired it: Antiquity, by Splotter. Not only is that game a marvel, but it is also one in which every player at the table can lose. And no, it isn't cooperative.

I've heard of Antiquity but had no idea it inspired Agricola, that's interesting. And yes, I agree about Nusfjord, fantastic game. - Carlo

Ok, as a long time uwe fan I have so much to say about this debate. But, I will say that Agricola’s player board feels like a little farm. It progresses with fields, pastures, and baby animals. Feast’s theme is soooo much more abstracted. I would argue it doesn’t at all feel Viking themed. None of my actions feel vikingy. But, it’s still a great game. I just think Agricola wins by a mile in theme. I love looking at my full fledged farm at the end of every game. I love the satisfaction of puzzling out the abstracted boards of feast. Theme - point for Agricola!
@AllYouCanBoard2 жыл бұрын
I agree - the viking theme might be more appealing on the surface, but Agricola's theme comes through more in the actual gameplay. - Carlo

So honestly, have only played Agricola and have played it twice but wasn’t a big fan so I’m going to say that I’m TEAM FEAST even though I haven’t played it. Sorry Carlo!

Haha, don't be sorry! Nobody is required/expected to like anything. You not liking it won't ruin my enjoyment of the game so it's all good. Besides, Feast is still a great game too. Thanks for watching!

Team Feast, but I enjoy both for different reasons. As Carlo said, Agricola feels more about mastering the game, having a predictably randomized gameplay loop. A Feast for Odin is more about exploring a shifting puzzle from different angles. The cards in Agricola ask you to see a path from the start of the game, in Feast they simply offer you a place to start. A Feast for Odin wins for me because it gives me - the person knowing and explaining the game - a chance to have a fun game exploring a weird angle, while new players enjoy themselves and have an actual chance to win. In Agricola, somebody who knows the game will either crush new players or has to play inefficient, and both aren't fun. It's a great game, but it requires players of similar skill.
@AllYouCanBoard2 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% with your comment, except for the fact that I'm on Team Agricola obviously. But you're absolutely right - if I was showing either game to a group of new players, I'd probably have more fun toying around with the system in Feast as well compared to possibly destroying new players in Agricola. Thanks for the super thoughtful comment. - Carlo

#TeamFeast I'm not quite sure why, I've never played either and don't often play games this heavy. For some reason I have 0 interest in agricola. And for some reason Feast for Odin has always been the only big box game that actually appeals to me. Idk what it is, maybe the theme, maybe cuz I really like polyominos. I just don't know if I have friends who could handle either game, I'd have to play solo a lot for sure.
@AllYouCanBoard2 жыл бұрын
And there's nothing wrong with not being interested in certain games. There are tons of games that don't interest me that are high up on the BGG rankings or I hear people raving about. Everyone's different and that's one of the things that makes this hobby so fun and engaging. Since you might not have much luck getting these 2 games played in person, just figured I'd recommend checking them out on BoardGameArena. - Carlo

TEAM FEAST! Feast is in my top 10 games. I think agrícola is okay, but it is not as fun. I feel restricted and like I cannot do as much.
@AllYouCanBoard2 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, Andres! That are certainly more requirements in Agricola, outside of the special circumstances allowed by your cards, but for the most part you need to expand your house, grow your family, create a food engine (usually either from animals or grain/vegetables), etc. I just love the puzzle of figuring out what other players are doing, which spaces I think will remain available, how and when to best use my cards, etc. But I really like A Feast for Odin too, and they're very different games. - Carlo
