It rattled the grill of my fireplace and I couldn’t even hear it drop because the amp was so loud. I only saw it afterwards and thought wtf.. These four Eminence V1030 are crazy efficient. One day I’ll put it outside and turn it up to 12, see how long it takes till the neighbors throw some stones.

One of the sweetest sounds I've ever heard is when I recorded my twin in the studio on 8 using the neck pickup on my 61 reissue SG with P94s thumping out a riff on the low strings. It's so tight, focused and powerful. I have to use a boost to replicate it live with the twin on 3. Not quite the same feel and focus, but it works.

I lugged around a Fender Twin for so many years in the late 80's and 90's. I finally got tired of towing around an amp that felt as heavy as a Volkswagen Beetle and I sold it. Stupidest thing I ever did. I could never turn it up to 10, even at gigs. But it is the absolutely best clean sound you will ever have in any amplifier. And with a good overdrive or fuzz pedal, you're in Hendrix and SRV territory very easily. I'll always regret selling that amp. It was old and beaten up, but it sounded so good.

Of the few gigs I got to in the 80’s & 90’s, Midnight Oil, Johnny Diesel & the Injectors, Screaming Jets, Hoodoo Gurus, they were all blisteringly loud gigs. That’s the way it was. THAT was rock. These days many people are shocked by the volume. Maybe it’s coz music is often heard through phone speakers; good but very small. But look at these blokes, particularly the gent on the right. The more they might complain about the volume the harder they find it to contain the sublime feeling of 4 x pushed power tubes.

I had an original 65 Twin Reverb in the sixties and it played clean all the way to 10. I played in an old shut down walk-in cooler and you could still hear it throughout the neighborhood. Years later, after replacing tubes as they went bad with tubes from a drug store, I noticed it developing some really good overdrive sounds at 5. Previously, I soldered the speaker leads from my 10" Silvertone amp to a guitar cable and ran it straight into the input on the Fender. For mild overdrive I set the Silvertone volume at one and for distortion I ran it up to 4 or 5. I kept the Fender volume at around 2 unless I really wanted to get loud. For effects I had Meistro Fuzz Tone, a Fuzz Face and a Vox wah-wah. Lost it all in Hurricane Katrina flood.

Those amps were used a lot in the 1960s. Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane used four Twin Reverbs daisy chained and ran his Gibson ES 345 in stereo through them. The Airplane was quite a loud group for that time period. Tommy Bolin when he played with Zephyr had a similar set up and at that time he was playing a Gibson SG of some sort. I saw them in 1970 and Bolin filled up an open field and beyond without a problem.

I added an mxr eq and a D+ and blew out both speakers on mine in the 80's. The ears eventually followed. Of course, that happened when I was the first guitarist (according to them...before they had store...had to wait for them to build it) that I bought a MESA M-180 for guitar, which I fed it into a 2x12 with EVM-12L's. Had to anchor the cab to keep it in one place. If you pointed it at a stack of Marshalls it moved them. Wanna try a LOUD amp? LOL! What? I can't hear you...
@michaellynn1071 Жыл бұрын
I have that exact amp. It is purely amazing. Witt a few pedals I can get it from sweet to absolutely dirty. Fuzz, overdrive, distortion, takes them beautifully. I can get it to mimic a Marshall with a JHS AT+, MXR FOD or if I want high gain a Friedman BE-OD. I use either the EHX Rams Head or Op-Amp Fuzz depending if I want classic Floyd fuzz or smashing pumpkins. With MXR Dyna Conp it’s beautiful clean. I’ve only taken in past 5 a few times because it is devastatingly loud but having it on 2-3 I can use easily at home and not have cops called. It gets this beautiful change when you go past 4, you sort of stop hearing it to feeling it. The sound characteristics change. The reverb is beautiful and the tremolo is classic. I cannot fault this amp.

I've owned a Twin Reverb. It was nice. It was loud. Then I owned a Super Twin Reverb. It was stupidly loud. It's unreal that such a volume level is possible while still getting clean surf guitar tones. Now I own a rather uncommon Fender, a 400PS, the most powerful all tube guitar/bass amp ever built on a production basis. A mere 435 watts RMS output. And...holy hell....yes it's even louder. It has to be hooked up to three separate cabinets to make use of its full output capacity and I have run it flat out. It was AWESOME. I used three Marshall 4x12s. I guess it was about as loud as a Pink Floyd concert in that room.
