A magnesium bar is going to be several times more bulky and heavier than that pencil sharpener. When you're hiking or on a trail, you probably want to pack as light as possible, so any tools you put in that pack, need to be efficient in terms of weight and bulk. 1lb bar of metal vs a tiny pencil sharpener that weighs a few grams. @@MaxC_1 You sound like a young, city person. I had the opposite experience. I was never not out in nature, all the way up till I left for college. I would spend the entire day in my own private wilderness, exploring. We had visiting ducks, geese, otters, deer, hawks, herons, turkey buzzards... you name it. There was no human noise; only very loud frogs, crickets, and the water flowing over the dam. My chores were things like picking up thousands of sticks and dragging them into the woods, chopping wood, and being a total mess for months, because I was highly allergic to pollen. I've had *more* than enough nature for one life, more than anyone I know. I think maybe more than nature being amazing, people these days are just tired of constantly being connected. As a welder who works with metal for a living, I must say you have to be extremely cautious with magnesium. Magnesium is extremely flammable but also difficult to extinguish. Neither water nor a traditional fire extinguisher work to put out the fire - a unique chemical is required to put out the fire. Although you don't use a lot of magnesium, putting too much could result in disaster easily. I know many welders who won't even touch a magnesium ĵob no matter how much it pays - just to darn risky.

Why the spear instead of the knife: 1- Range. 2- You're not damaging your knife by sticking it into the ground. 3- Your knife stays clean, presuming you're not using it to butcher the frog/squirrel. 4- You can hold the spear over a flame. 5- More weapons. Why bring a pencil sharpener instead of a lighter? 1) Helps you make mini spears. 2) Helps you make and light tinder easily, even if the surface of nearby wood is wet. 3) More firestarter options are always useful, just in case you fuck up and lose one.

Maybe shave off or bend one and sometimes the part that spark crumbles off, or maybe just use as if and see if that fire starter spark maker thingy could get it going eventually lighting the wood shavings. Also if you have an empty spent cheap Bic cigarette lighter and all the fuel fluid is gone, could the flint thing still be useful for this too? If so be a good way of recycling it put it to good use if the time comes and you're stranded and need to get a fire going for obvious survival reasons that don't really need to mention.
