We had visiting ducks, geese, otters, deer, hawks, herons, turkey buzzards... you name it. There was no human noise; only very loud frogs, crickets, and the water flowing over the dam. My chores were things like picking up thousands of sticks and dragging them into the woods, chopping wood, and being a total mess for months, because I was highly allergic to pollen. I've had *more* than enough nature for one life, more than anyone I know. I think maybe more than nature being amazing, people these days are just tired of constantly being connected. As a welder who works with metal for a living, I must say you have to be extremely cautious with magnesium. Magnesium is extremely flammable but also difficult to extinguish. Neither water nor a traditional fire extinguisher work to put out the fire - a unique chemical is required to put out the fire. Although you don't use a lot of magnesium, putting too much could result in disaster easily. I know many welders who won't even touch a magnesium ĵob no matter how much it pays - just to darn risky.

I'm a postgraduate MSc Biochemist from Europe and if you would told me that pencil sharpener is made from Magnesium, I would never believed you. Just wow. I thought it was made out of Aluminium with iron/steel razor in the middle. Do you guys know that Magnesium fire is notoriously hard to put it out since it reacts with almost everything when set in flames.

The flares that military aircraft use as countermeasures against IR guided missiles also use magnesium since it burns at a high temperature.

a bit of an exaggeration of magnesium. Staring at it won't make you lose your eyes atleast never for such miniscule amounts. You'd need to burn a whole strip and then stare it dead for a good while. Same story as welding. Short glance? fine. Staring a magnesium fire? Welcome temporary blindness and eventually destroyed eyesight

I'd suggest half a hacksaw blade. I wrap one end with tape which has lots of uses including as tender. The saw itself is great for making tender dust quickly as well as cutting. Honestly I'd recommend a mutitool but not everyone carries them and more durable ones can be expensive.

Seeing the end of that clip gave me a thought. Since most sparklers are magnesium and dirt cheap maybe that could be used to start a fire. Maybe shave off or bend one and sometimes the part that spark crumbles off, or maybe just use as if and see if that fire starter spark maker thingy could get it going eventually lighting the wood shavings. Also if you have an empty spent cheap Bic cigarette lighter and all the fuel fluid is gone, could the flint thing still be useful for this too? If so be a good way of recycling it put it to good use if the time comes and you're stranded and need to get a fire going for obvious survival reasons that don't really need to mention. Just save them up and always carry them with you until you get in a habit

Ever since I was a Girl Scout leader, I've been making firestarters out of egg cartons, lint, and the wax from Babybel wax covers. I haven't been in the GS for about fifteen years and yet I still make them. Have a stack of them right now. I guess I need to burn up some debris in the back yard this fall.
