In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between twenty and thirty minutes usually. But sometimes a project needs a little MORE than just a few minutes... so in A Few (More) Minutes of Fun, you'll be invited along for a deeper dive into my creative process.
With the gel plates out, it was always going to end up being a few MORE minutes of fun... especially with some real leaves to play with! Watch the still-green leaves I collected turn into autumnal prints, both simple and layered.

I just completed a lifelong dream to drive the entire road from Miami to Key West. I swiped to fern fronds from the hotel for just this purpose! It was a beautiful drive and we saw a Key Deer grazing along the highway. They are very rare as they are a delicious appetizer for alligators. They are a really small cousin to white tailed deer. So small😊

I ummed and ahhed about my first gel plate for a long time, but I have NEVER regretted going for it. (That was the six by six square, and it's still my favourite... the Gelli Arts brand is really good - I'm contemplating investing in one of their very large plates... umming and ahhing again, as it's not cheap.) I don't know whether you saw the session printing purely backgrounds with Distress Inks and Oxides..If you want Turner-esque, that's where to go! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXvIl52vj7GGY9E (And for further gel plate temptation, I don't know whether you can see these Turner-esque paint prints over on IG from this link instagram.com/p/C07LZ3FoS4H/ - that was a very happy session!) Also, a top tip - if you can get hold of a large acrylic stamping block (the thinner ones), or even a set of clear die cutting plates, you will be able to place your gel plate on it - so pop gel plate on acrylic block/plate - take first pull - remove leaves and then you can “stamp” the remaining leaf plate *exactly* where you would like it, including of course off set a little. @w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
As you know, I love my Frescos, but as chalk paints they do dry very quickly, so the Golden acrylics definitely give you a slightly more relaxed playtime with the gel plate, as there is more open time. I could mix the Frescos with some extending medium, but that seems a bit of a kerfuffle!! And I've managed very happily with Frescos on the plate... it just means moving with some speed (and of course any water spritzing helps too!).

@@w0rdsandp1ctures I have the idea when seeing others work with open Golden acrylics that it gives a real thin (translucent) but still bright color. Kerffuffle, what a beautiful word that I unexpectedly found the translation for on google translate (it had a dialect atmosphere for me).

Oh, I'm sure you'll love working with it. Smalt Hue is absolutely an all-time favourite of mine... as you say, so subtle, and with a touch of melancholy but also a touch steely strength. I love it! So happy you enjoyed the video - thank you so much for watching and for such a lovely comment.

I only recently learned about adding water to paint on the gel plate to create those textured backgrounds and you have shown that so well in this video - thank you. I really liked the way you used ink on the leaves to stamp into the silhouette, adding a little more detail. The gel plate is such a versatile tool, isn't it?

Yes, you can have so much fun with a gel plate - and it's always hard to stop! Very happy you enjoyed seeing the layers building here... and yes, that mop-up technique always gets me some of my favourite prints in any session. Same thing happened in one of my earliest printing videos ! (Here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2i2moZqqZiVhZo ) Thanks so much for your continuing company on this creative journey.

Beautiful prints! I enjoyed watching your process. I was thinking that you might place a sheet of paper down on the left over paint and see what kind of print you would get before you wiped it clean.

Yes, I do that all the time when I'm creating usually (though more often tags to create backgrounds, rather than paper), but there's only so much you can cover in a video session... this was already more minutes than I meant it to be! Thanks so much for watching - I'm very happy you enjoyed - and thank you for your great comment.

Alison, I just love your videos. I’m a fairly new subscriber, so I’m playing catch up with watching your videos. I have 3 gel plates, but I never have very good luck with what I pull off of them. My favorite gel plate is a 4x6” and I seem to the best luck with it. Maybe some of the other subscribers can give me some hints? The other gel plates I have are an 8x10” and a 8” round, which was sent to me as a gift. I’ve kind of given up on the round one, because nothing works well on it at all.

Very happy you are enjoying the videos - thank you for following along with the fun! You don't mention what brand your plates are... I definitely find a difference between my Gelli Arts plate and the Ranger ones (I prefer the Gelli Arts, but it's all down to personal preference, really). And do you get bad results with all mediums? Paints? Inks? Alcohol Inks? If it's only paints you have problems with, then maybe it's the type of paint you are using... Sometimes cleaning the plate with baby wipes and/or hand sanitiser can help to restore the surface to playability. There are lots of videos here on KZbin about looking after your plates - just search for cleaning and/or caring for gel plates. The solution may well already be out there for you. Good luck!

I love so much your choise of golors! So many beautiful papers 🤍💙🤎 Have you ever tried with watercolors (in tubes) on your gel press? I did it, the result is not bad, it's interesting. An upcoming vidéo may be...😉

Most of my watercolour tubes are too expensive for me to want to use them on a gel plate! But it's interesting to hear about. If I see some cheap ones on sale I'll have a think about it... Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Happy you enjoyed it, thank you! No, it's not a home-dyed top... it was bought from Marks & Spencer's Per Una range about a quarter of a century ago. (I have two - the greeny blue one here, and one that is several shades of blue. If you watch enough videos, you'll see that one sooner or later... they've become my filming "uniform"!)

Oh no! May have to get my gel plate out again this afternoon. Great inspiration. May i ask where you got that useful craft mat from. It made mixing colours and keeping paint flowing so much easier.
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
Happy to hear you enjoyed it, and I hope you'll have a great time with your printing. It's a pretty basic craft mat. This one is a silicone craft mat by Wow (a UK embossing powder company), and they call it a Premium Embossing Craft Mat - www.wowembossingpowder.co.uk/wow-premium-embossing-craft-mat-2314-p.asp but any silicone or teflon craft mat will do. Ranger produce a non-stick craft sheet rangerink.com/products/ranger-non-stick-craft-sheet and I believe the soft sheet on Tim Holtz's glass media mat is made of similar stuff. You can even use those reusable baking sheets (like these which I take when I'm travelling - www.amazon.co.uk/YQL-30X40cm-Reusable-Transfer-Resistance/dp/B094VQFK93?th=1 ). Basically any waterproof surface will do - or you can use a china plate or palette paper for mixing your paint. This white one is just the one I use for filming. My usual craft mat is a giant version of the brown Ranger one, which covers most of my table. (Unfortunately the independent UK craft stockist which supplied those giant ones closed down but I daresay you could track down something similar with some careful Google searching.) Hope that helps.

For lining up the leaves, I wonder if a light pad would help. Put the gelli plate on the light pad and I bet you could see the leaf veins. As long as the paper is white and not super thick, you might be able to line up perfectly. If I had a gelli plate I'd try it. Sadly I don't. 😭
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
That's a good thought, thank you... except I don't have a light pad!! But there are others who will find that a helpful suggestion, I'm sure. There are recipes online for homemade gel plates, made mostly with household materials. Maybe worth a go, at least to help you decide whether it's something you might like to invest in in the future. Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comment.

Very very cool - but just wondering - why does everyone use copy paper for gelli printing? Does regular cardstock or mixed media paper just not work?
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
Oh, it works perfectly - and if you want a really good print to save and frame, then you definitely want to use some good cardstock or paper for that. But when you're having a big session printing multiples, like here, copy paper is simply cheaper. (I can easily end up with well over 50 prints from a session, and sometimes 100 - so that would be pretty costly if every single one was on decent paper!) With the copy paper you can learn what works, what you enjoy - ready for future "proper paper" prints, without worrying about cost. And if you see a really exciting print building on the plate, you can always grab a better piece of paper for that one. Hope that answers your question. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

All kinds of things - use them as journal page backgrounds, or glue and trim for tag backgrounds, or layered into mixed media cards... or even make a whole book out of them - like this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/fH7boYp4gL90gdU Hope that answers your question!

Wonder if you could use the exam paper that they use on doctors exam tables to capture these beauties?
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
Absolutely - you can use all kinds of papers to capture gel prints. (Unless they've got some kind of non-porous surface sheen, but that seems unlikely... and even with glossy or smooth papers like tracing paper, you can usually find some medium that will work with them. They might not take inks, but they should play with paint.) I hope that means there's some leafy exam paper minutes of fun in your near future! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
