Your dog seems very similar to ours in terms of his behaviour - ours is pretty anxious and very quick to become nervous. He can look nervous when wanting (or not wanting) cuddles but if I'm unsure I stop petting him and he'll quickly go to nudge my hand or give me licks as an indicator of "no! more cuddles!". Although I feel bad because if you know him, you can kinda tell that he gets a lot of cuddles from other people that he doesn't want (but is too anxious to walk away/is being held). Also, that is one FLUFFY dog!!!

When I'm petting my dog sometimes she'll put her paw on me. I've always interpreted it as her telling me "You are mine, keep petting me"

+anonymousdratini Did you teach her to shake? (give you her paw when you put your hand out) My dog will do that sometimes too, but I always interpreted it as an extension of the shake - him saying "look I am doing the thing you told me to before, can i have treats/attention again?"

Thanks for this video. It's hard to communicate with my parents about my new dogs needs - we got him from a shelter, and he was obviously mishandled in his last home. He is VERY uncomfortable around people who aren't in his pack, he has trauma surrounding collars/being rough on his neck, and he has never properly learned to socialize with other animals. When I tell my parents that Lando COULD become comfortable with them if they would only sit down and listen to him (he likes specific, nonthreatening behavior while he's getting to know people like sitting, hands resting where he can see them, etc), they wave it aside and tell me I'm being too soft on him, that he will get used to other people - or he will bite someone and that there's no coming back from that!! I wish they would understand that it's just become part of who he is and work WITH him.

Hi Jessi! Long time follower and fan… all the way from Europe! I was waiting for you to show us Yucca again so I could have an excuse to ask my question. I'm considering getting a tortoise and I'm in the research phase. Here in France I see a lot of information about Hermann's tortoise (or the Florida turtle if you're searching for a water-loving friend) but I haven't found explanations as clear and useful as your What When How videos. Would you consider doing one on tortoises? Or just giving me your insight? Thanks a lot anyway!

I love tortoises! I found one on a hike the other day completely by chance. It was camouflaged so well and if it had been a little farther away from the path or hadn't moved, there's no way I could've noticed it. It was extremely cautious. As soon as I got near it froze and didn't move. When I got closer still with my hand, it immediately retreated into its shell and closed the bottom (chest, belly?) plate as well. I took some leaves off of it and snapped a few photos and then replaced them so it would still be camouflaged and not be negatively affected by my curiosity. :) photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNEegP2dzhxdUxWzZ7g0DPxK7vr8og4MgZd-ANG0rfaPQLE1FSe0sdzI4q69XRpxA/photo/AF1QipOqdy6TKm6OGsvRHj4VOTwqgWVcB5UovLs1aXQe?key=OTRZTGsyNkpqQkswZTJUNGdyUXZpeVNUNGcwYXR3

My hedgehog Charlie has all kinds of ways he communicates and to me I can tell the difference pretty easily, but others can't, he also recognizes my voice/smell and knows me from other people. One thing I can only guess is a happy/relaxing behaviour is when he is getting comfy and is really snuggly, he kind of looks like he has the hiccups? I have been told by other long time hedgehog owners that they call them "happy hiccups." He usually falls asleep promptly after as well. Have you experienced this with hedgehogs before? He also makes some kind of low rumble/purring sounds/vibrations when he eats while I massage his legs or when he gets belly rubs (and rolls over for them, then falls asleep) very interesting behaviours!

@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 8 жыл бұрын
+Cassie Wood They CAN feel through their shell! It's awesome! It's most noticeable when one doesn't see you and you touch it, they can startle and they pull their head in quickly. Or for Yucca it's really obvious when we rub her on the back and she pushes into it and moves back and forth like some dogs would when you find the best spot near their tail.

+Cassie Wood I remember when I was in a zoo a few years ago, a zookeeper told us that some people who keep tortoises as pets sometimes would drill holes in the edge of the shell and attach a balloon on it, the zookeeper explained how painfull and bad this is for turtoises. Again, this shows the importance of education.

Growling is very much typically an aggression/discomfort sign in dogs I assume, but I wonder a little about my dog! He's a 7 year old mini schnauzer, now, and we know him very well in how he communicates with us. Something I've always been in a habit of whenever we pick him up or cuddle him is sometimes make little rumbly sounds at him in a playful way, which he tends to echo back at us in little growls. He shows no other signs of discomfort when he does this and is always still very loose and relaxed when being held, and only does it whenever someone else makes the sounds at him first. I've had some others express concern about the sound though, because it is a growly sound. Should I be paying more attention to it, maybe?

There are many things about dog language we misread. Tail wags spexially is what get people bitten. Tail wags also mean alertness and anxiety and the intensity of whatever they are feeling at at moment (which can be good or bad). It also means happiness, but I prefer telling people that it's not always happiness to keep it safe (for the dog and person)

After being bitten my dog, I've found I can read him very easily. I've especially noticed that I can see his discomfort/anxiousness in his eyes. They seem to dilate when he feels threatened or scared, and it is interesting that I can identify signs of submission in him which are actually warning signs of feeling uncomfortable.

So one of my 3 Shorkies has wanted to be right up under either while I'm lying on the couch, which he is literally tucked up under my butt as much as he can or he follows me to the bathroom and will wait on me to come out! Is the couch deal a sign that something is wrong with him, like an illness or something? What is the deal with him waiting for me outside the bathroom? I've seen him wait like 20-30 minutes while I'm in the shower! Thank you for taking time to read our questions! My husband and I are going to take a trip to Montana some time in the near future, do you allow visitors or volunteers? I'm in love with Kemosabe and have a soft spot in my heart for Sloths!

When a dog licks its lips it can be a calming signal. They could be saying that they are not comfortable or they are trying to calm the other person/dog down. When you were touching Charlies head he was giving out a lip lick and closed his eyes for a bit. My older dog does similar behavior, she loves attention and almost begs to get pet but she is also gets uncomfortable with people touching her head.

This seems to be an appropriate place to request an episode on bird songs. Given your field of interest, you would probably focus on pet birds and what they're saying to humans but I was hoping to include wild birds and what they're saying to each other. Does anybody have any idea? They tend to be somewhat repetitious but with subtle variations that suggest there's a lot more being said than "watch out for that cat."

Is the slight teeth baring on dogs as a submissive sign mostly a positive or a negative thing? Can such a distinction be made? One of our dogs often does that when she's begging for food, but I've always thought it's mostly because of the shape of her lips and muzzle in general.

One of my dogs uses yawns to communicate. He will yawn if he's uncomfortable in a situation, usually if he doesn't want to do what you are asking him to do. Our vet said it was a displacement activity, his way of saying I'm not a threat I just don't want to do that, funny thing is so many people will go oh look he's so tired when he does it as they are huge yawns.

My dog is between 10 and 11 years old. I adopted her from the shelter when she was around 7 or 8 months old at my vets best guess. She is a border collie mix and nowhere near as calm as Charlie. If she ever acted that calmly I would take her to the vet because that would be way off her normal behavior. :) I also recently rescued another older dog who is a chihuahua mix (I think) and he will go rigid if I get near him while he is eating. The rest of the time he is wiggly unless I speak loudly and then he cowers and gets quiet. Have you considered doing one of those dog DNA tests? I saw them on an Animal Planet (or maybe NatGeo Wild) show recently and found them on Amazon. The show is called Whose Your Doggie. I have to admit to be curious exactly what my girl is. The shelter told me she was part Shetland Sheepdog and something else they didn't know about. I think they were wrong though but it was a good guess. Upon studying her behavior and more comparing her looks I have realized she is Border Collie mix and may have some Shetland in her but she doesn't look much like one. - Heidi

Dogs were artificially selected by humans and bred into the many domesticated critters we have now, from the fluffiest poodle to the beefiest St. Bernard. But has our long cohabitation with dogs changed humans? Are there any signs of behavioral or anatomical changes humans have undergone thanks to dogs (or cats)?

I find cat behaviours very easy to understand since I've grown up with them. I can easily know if they feel uncomfortable and may attack. But I'm really afraid of dogs. Mostly because I'm really unable to tell if they're about to hurt me. There's this dog (who has a collar) that I sometimes see wandering alone on the street around my house. This already terrifies me, but whenever I have to walk by him or if I even look at him, he barks and makes a move towards me. My friends have told me that dogs barking are defending their territory, but that the attitude of this dog does not indicate that it would bite. I wouldn't know, my reaction is always to scream and hurry away. Any advice on understanding the dog and not being terrified of it?
@valken666

The way to make friendship with any animal is with food and petting. If they try to hurt you or bark, just leave or move away, come back later and try to pet or give food again. This way you'll train them to be nice to you, as you accept only nice actions from them. I used to fight a lot with my animals, but now that I act like this all my relationships are very good. I'm sure you can make this dog your friend if you want to.

Jessi, on your video about being Bitten by a bird, I think I accidentally and unwittingly criticized you about using too high a tone of voice. Obviously, I was mistaken. I am sorry for any offense, and offer my sincere apologies. Thanks for this video, on another note. It is obvious you Know how to care for our brother and sister species out there, and there is no word for the gratitude I have for you Good work. On that note, my cat insists on me standing by her food bowl and watching her eat when I get home from work (usually late, around 8 or 9 pm AZ time). There are other signs that suggest that she may have been the runt of her litter, and may have had a sort of addiction transfer (so to speak) from her mother to me. I sort of adopted her from the streets/stole her from my neighbors a few years back when I was in college, and in that time I've noticed she is semi-dependent on me. I know from experience that if I am gone for less than a week, she doesn't eat. This cat is my Daughter, my lil' baby, and I am responsible for her well-being. And, I want to see her grow into an Adult cat. She can't be half cat with human behavior, she's been neutered, so that would do her no good. Any advice you can give me would be beyond appreciated, and if nothing else I could at least learn from a conversation. Thanks for all You do! JMXIII

+Porcelain chips Cats and dogs can get along and even become friends! I think it's down to the individual, not the breed. My mom's dogs have no problem with cats because they grew up with them. In fact, one of them really loves his cat friends and will lick them as if they were puppies. But any dog with a nervous or territorial personality, or even one that had just never met a cat before, might stand its fur on end regardless of its breed.

Ball pythons will sometimes just stop eating for a few weeks and then start up again when they get hungry. If he's not hungry and you offer food he can communicate his not wanting to eat it and to please make it go away by simply moving away, hissing, or striking without biting. As they get older they usually want to eat less often, maybe every 10-14 days instead of every week. If your vet said he was healthy I'd bet it's because he's just not as hungry as he was when he was younger and doesn't have anything to do with the "adventure" :)

The snake dance you're referring to could also just be him wanting to get out and explore. Try bringing him out to stretch more often.

Ok, so along with debunking dominance theory, I've often come across the phrase- dominance isn't a character trait. So.. Shouldn't it follow that submissive isn't a character trait either? What should we call it then? In general I find those words loaded with human meanings. We primates DO often have linear hierarchies, and to us, being submissive to another is mostly a bad thing- associated with loss of control and loss of resources. I'd posit (and wonder what you think of that) that in dogs it is not the same. If dogs could speak and explain it in human terms, might they describe the behavior you called "submissive" as not tied to weakness, but more like saying "I pose no threat to you. Be nice to me".. As in, it's offered voluntarily for the benefit of both parties, rather than being forced from the top down. Of course I understand the need to simplify this in a quick video but just wondering what you thought about this.

+littlefootfeet I would argue that neither dominance nor submissiveness are character traits but that they are a status. A dog might be submissive to it's owner since it's the alpha animal in that relationship but that wouldn't necessarily mean that they are submissive to other humans and animals. Training and character probably influence that and there are dogs which for ever reason are not inclined to show dominance but rather submissive behavior to everything, maybe in order to avoid conflict. Dominance is usually something that you have to work for and be able to "fight" for. A pecking order in social animals is the norm but a cat for example probably would not care.

BIIGtony No but.. alpha isn't a thing! Dogs do not have an alpha. Alpha was a word to describe the "leader" of a wolf pack- but it turns out, "breeding pair" would be more accurate. Offspring of any animal tend to defer to the parents. You don't see some swans with young and say "look that's the alpha swan!", right? It's the parent/s. People have this image of a young wolf, fighting his way up the ranks.. but then, *THINK* about what that means for a moment- that would mean he'd win the right to mate with his mother. That's not what happens! Guess who does have more linear social hierarchies though? Oh yeah, primates. It makes sense that we'd see this in other species even if it's not there. EDIT: see here if you wanna know more about wolf hierarchies, though feral dogs don't even form packs so their social behaviour is different. www.koryoswrites.com/nonfiction/dominance-behavior-in-canids/
