Loved this series, used to bunk of tea time at boarding school to watch it (because the tv lounge was empty). As A kid I just loved the silly old fellas, as I got older I wised up to the clever machinations of the women in the series. So well written. Kind Regards, John W from NZ. =) Thanks for the video!

Hey hey! A fellow Kiwi! Yeah, as a kid in primary school, I HATED it when this show came on, but hear me out! I found it so, so ‘boring’, but when repeats came on TV on late weekday afternoons around 5pm, I’d want to go outside and play . . . but even if it _was_ ‘boring’, this series about the ‘three old men’ was so strangely compelling and soothing and weirdly ‘nostalgic’ that I just had to sit there and watch it through (this was around ‘93 ~ ‘94). Later, when I was like 11 or 12, I’d be obliged to go to scouts club in Ranui but I resented having to leave because I actually preferred to be watching _Last of the Summer Wine_ when I had to go! By the time I was 13 and I’d entered high school, it was no longer ‘boring’ - I loved it and I was a full-fledged fan. I was the only _Last of the Summer Wine_ in a West Auckland high school! On a field trip down country we stayed in a sort of commune hotel and I’d actually go to the facility rec room that week alone, in which they had a T.V., to watch it in the afternoons, antisocial devil that I was. I just couldn’t miss it!

@@fletcherhamilton3177 I was at boarding school in the early 90's near Pukehohe, I would ditch dinner line up at mess hall to hide out in the TV lounge watching it. Good times mate!

Holmfirth is well worth a visit Potcheen, if ever you are able to as it is strange to have such a feeling of familiarity with a place although you have never been there because you have seen it so many times on television. TBH I've been meaning to go back and do a follow up or a Part 2 video as I only cover the main LOTSW filming locations around Holmfirth centre and Bill Owens grave in this one and Peter Sallis has been buried at the side of him since I made this video.

Hi Northernspotter101, glad to hear that you've enjoyed the video and you are looking forward to visiting Holmfirth. Unfortunately and AFAIK you cannot directly visit the houses used for Clegg and Howards cottages in the series and only admire them from afar as they are located up a private road. Apparently the residents are non too friendly towards fans of the show and do not welcome sightseers, so beware if you're thinking of visiting this location.

I've been to Clegg and Howard's houses. We walked about as far as Howard's but we soon turned back as I got scared a resident might complain. As we went back down the hill a dog came out and started barking from a very high wall to the left of the track. Was nice to see the street though.

Hello Mr. H, how much time would you recommend to see everything in Holmfirth? One day, two maybe? I''m planning a trip to England and wanted to stop by Holmfirth. Thanks for any advice you could give!

Hi A Bishop, it all depends on which filming locations you are hoping to visit. All the locations in this video including the Last of the Summer Wine Exhibition are within easy walking distance of each other around Holmfirth town centre. However if you are hoping to visit the graves of Bill Owen and Peter Sallis during your visit the little churchyard that they are buried in it is located about one and a half miles outside of the town centre with some steep climbs in places, so a car or public transport may be in order. We did everything in this video including the exhibition and fish & chips in about 5 hours going at it at a leisurely pace, but if you wish to visit nearby Jacksons Bridge for Clegg's and Howard's cottages (note these are up a private road with some people saying they were told to leave by the residents) or some of the more obscure filming locations then you may want to give it a full day or split your visit across two. Hope this helps and enjoy your visit to England when you travel.

Nice video Mr H, Ive been up here a few time but when I went to Upper thong church I never found compos grave. A nice place interesting to visit is Heptonstall near to Hebden bridge, and a walk to Hardcastle craggs. PS I also love Yorkshire chippys.

@MrHsHotPot 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mick, thanks for the tip regards Heptonstall near Hebden Bridge I'll keep it in mind for our travels. I'm suprised that you couldn't find Bill Owens grave as it's relatively easy to locate once you enter the churchyard via the impressive lychgate and keeping the church to your right follow the path round towards the slope with the handrail facing you, then it's the first grave on your right at the bottom of the slope directly behind the handrail. A separate little path takes you to his grave and the little memorial garden dedicated to Bill Owen by his son Tom Owen where fans can leave tributes to the actor if they wish. Although this area is not as impressive as it once was when I first visited and is slowly disappearing due to apparantly Tom Owen losing interest in the project since his fathers internment in 1999 and failing to pay St John's Church for it's upkeep despite numerous requests.

I lived in Hebden Bridge for a while in the late '60s and some scenes in 'Summer Wine' seem familiar to me - were any of the out-takes shot there?
@MrHsHotPot
@MrHsHotPot 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce, not to my knowledge but maybe some minor scenes were shot there that couldn't be done at either 'Holmfirth' or 'Slaithwaite' for some reason which is where the bulk of Last Of The Summer Wine filming was done.

I noticed the scaffolding that is surrounding this cafe and some of the bldgs. in that area. It also appears as if some of the soot has been cleaned off the stone surfaces. Is this being done in just this area or are they doing it to restore the original appearance? So many famous villages have done this and I just wondered if this was the case for Holmfirth.

i knew one of camera men employed on this series------it was common knowledge Peter Sallis and Kathy Staff both didnt get on with Tom Owen in fact they where dead against him coming into show in the first place----i never thought he fitted in-my personal opinion was that he wasnt a great actor and it was common knowledge he didnt get on at all with his dad Bill-story lines where very poor after Bill died and although i never missed it-some of the shows where very poor-i still watch it on freeview each nite but sadly most of cast now deceased
@MrHsHotPot

Hi Chevy790, in hindsight LOTSW should have ended with Series 21 and the episode 'Just A Small Funeral' this would have given both the cast and the audience their chance to say a fitting goodbye to Compo and Bill Owen who was arguably the shows biggest star. Sadly the BBC decided to try and carry on without him probably in the misguided belief that no one actor was bigger than the show. Sadly that proved not to be the case and LOTSW would limp on without direction for another ten series as the storylines got poorer and poorer with each series.
@merlinstwin7373
@merlinstwin7373 3 жыл бұрын
Tom and his storyline were jarring. There was no replacing the character of Compo. I don't think they could have successfully replaced Clegg's character either, even though it was so different from the earlier episodes. The series should have ended with Compo's funeral and perhaps one or two wrap up episodes to tie up the storylines. Much as I loved and still love LOTSW, the later episodes are sometimes difficult to watch.

@@merlinstwin7373 totally agree-final eposides where brutal and the actors must have known this but for them it was work and guaranteed wages-i often wonder if those actors who appeared in it that are still alive ever watch it now?
