Thank you. The only video with ACTUAL information. I will buy a draw knife and use my stable balancing log,with a knotch, to use it as a vice for the log to be stripped.

I have a machete. I should try the knife techniques with that. To cut a knot with a draw knife, I turn the knife to quite a slant. Thus I am slicing instead of pealing.

I like how you talk about safety, have you ever tried debarking with a flat head shovel with sharpened edge? This way you can stand on log and push away from your body. A big plus with shovel is you can do it standing straight up.

It works better with some kinds of trees than others - but yes - that is a good trick!

Interesting video! What I was really into, was those big pieces of logs. ☺️ I been wanting a few. A couple as stools, a taller one to use a a small table top and a bench like the one I saw behind you. Greg, thank you for sharing and teaching, always appreciated. 😉

By the way I learned about removing bark, but me and big sharp tools don't go together lol.☺️ Even in the kitchen I use only two knives one for pretty much on everything and the other for it's weight to help me with big heavy roots, like huge sweet potatoes, jicama and peeling pineapples. During the holidays I at times travel with my knives since I'm familiar with them if I'm going to help prepare meals. If I have not mentioned it, Greg may you and yours have a Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Safe and Happy New Year!! Thanks again!😉

You should be using cedar or better still black locust. They will out last spruce by a long way and since the biggest investment in a fence is the work to install it pays to use the right wood. If you use cedar in the late spring the bark will just slide off with little effort.

I'm using what I've got growing on my property. Spring is the best time for barking - I forgot to mention that in the video.

It is good to use what you can get for free for sure. Merry Christmas.

I'm wondering if you would have had better control and better results with the draw knife if you had put a stump at the other end of the pole like you did when using the ax. Interesting techniques and options.
@maritimegardening48874 жыл бұрын
The stump adds only a fraction of the weight that sitting on it does.

Is it wise to take off bark for firewood before stacking the wood for long term use.
@maritimegardening4887 Жыл бұрын
It would help it dry out for sure - but it would be a lot of work!

Is there an advantage to removing the bark from the poles? Why not just leave it on if it’s just going to be used as fence posts?
@mikestrothotte4674 жыл бұрын
Dave Fisher The bark keeps moisture in, causing premature rot in fence posts.
