I Dare You to Peel Logs Faster

This log peeling disk has quickly become my favourite tool for quickly removing bark from logs. After only a few minutes of use and the wood shavings piled high I think back to how much work it is to use a draw knife as I look at it in the distance collecting dust on the shelve. I don't think I can ever go back to the hard work of the log peeling knife as this thing makes that tedious task almost prehistoric. If you haven't been able to tell yet, I kind of like this log peeler. Hooked up the the 9" angle grinder this thing puts the shavings up into the air all right. Check out today's video to see me take six, 13-foot red pine longs and quickly debark them for an upcoming building project. I"d imagine if log construction is on your to-do list, you'll want to check out this video. Glad you're all along for the ride, here we go!

I love the way that that not only debarks the logs,but allows you to shave down knots and shape the log as well.

I'll dare! Pealing logs by hand is best done in May through June after being cut down. I start at the bottom of the log with a draw knife making one long strip from one end to the other, then rotate log 180 and do the same on the other side. Now you have a place to start pealing with what I use is a bull nose trowel 7"x3 3/8". I start by prying the bark open then insert the other hand under the bark and keep prying until you have a nice size piece and repeat. Log is then natural looking with no gouging and smooth. People love to buy a log that looks like this with the branches cut flush. 8 inch log by 12 ft. takes about 10 to 15 minutes and no noise or chips all over. Easy clean up into wheel borrow and roll to burning pile. From Northern Cass county MN where red pines are just like yours.

I done 200+ logs (fir and spruce) that were cut during the winter and then peeled before the bark dried in the spring and summer. Comes off in full length sheet. Just as fast as that mechanical peeler and the screw driver I used weighs less and cost about $5. Nice to learn about the angle grinder peeling disc, but doubt I'd every buy one based on the videos. Just have to time the peeling effort and the bark almost falls off in nearly full length sheets.

Howdy Sandy- glad you’re getting some use out of your peeling disc. When you’re using a peeling disc to make a hewn face you have to set the blades much lighter than you have them now. It would be a good idea to have a practice piece before you start on the finished piece. We’ve been using these for a couple years now and they have really paid off. Take care and God bless

YOU DARED US! Well, there is a way! If you were to fell the trees around the first of June, depending on your location, you would find the bark could be quickly peeled off by hand. No, I'm not speaking from experience, but the knowledge I gained watching another channel, from another Canadian: "The Outsider." I enjoy watching your channel. G'day Sandy, That looks like a handy attachment for your logs, the bark on the trees where we are is generally between one and two inches thick and it's hard, you have to cut along the length with an axe and then bar it off or leave it for a year and will fall off I prefer that method 👍.

Hi Sandy! It might be that I don't know what I am talking about, (wouldn't be the first time LOL) but one would think taking bark when the wood is frozen has at least one big advantage, less gumming up of the blade from pitch. I wonder how the blade will perform in warmer weather? Will the flying chips scare off the bugs? That advantage would justify owning one! LOL

Do you get a lot of usage between blade sharpenings? It's pricey and wondering if worth the cost vs. the angle grinder attachments that are a chain saw blade, that work well also and are able to be resharpened.
@sawingwithsandy

It's still going real well and haven't had to sharpen the blades yet. Seems to be good qualtiy steel in them

OUCH...I got too close to the screen and got hit in the eye with a piece of bark.. That thing is a beast. If you lowered the blades would it give a smooth finish?

Have you ever tried it on Eastern White Cedar. It has a very stringy bark. I need to peel fence posts
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried any cedar but I do know the place I bought it mentions that it doesn't do well with red cedar due to the stringy nature of the bark

@Sawing with Sandy yeah I got in touch with the company. They said Cedar is a no-go. It will just clog constantly. Thanks

Hello Sandy, no doubt that rascal can throw the bark on the ground, and up your nose, and down your pants, it is not a cheap tool in price or the quality work it performs, and best of all, it has nice accommodations for repair or replace of the blades,
