Silverface

Sounds beast dude! I maybe wrong but I think once the blueface was in the mix Adam had the dual rec for backup if the Blueface died. Then he put the 2nd vh4 (silverface)in the dual rec's place. I saw Tool in Vegas a few weeks ago and the silverface was off, no lights, no tube lights, nothing! A friend also saw them in San Fran and he said the same thing. I don't think he used 3 amps together ever.... Even back in the day you can see him using 2 amps. (2 Marshalls) I think the Diezel/Marshall sounds good together and the Marshall/Dual Rec sound good together. 3 amps at once? Holy crap lol IDK! Where did you get it man? Hope you got a killer deal
@opiateofthemasses10 жыл бұрын
Back in the day he only used 1-2 amps because that's probably all he could afford lol. He used marshall, then marshall/marshall, then marshall/boogie, then marshall/boogie/diezel, then marshall/diezel/diezel. He even occasionally used Marshall/boogie/boogie at a few shows. He's uses 3 amps, it's been confirmed by quite a few people who have been on stage, one of which was Peter Diezel. I won't go into the standby/backup argument. Think of it this way, do you honestly think that if he had a 3rd amp on stage all those years he would just never use it? Especially when he's used 3+ amps to record most of his album tones?
@jondano10 жыл бұрын
I always assumed he used all three amps too. I do know for a fact the middle VH4 was not used during the show in vegas and San fran show.
@opiateofthemasses10 жыл бұрын
jondano hmm I've watched a san fran video, and the light def was off... Do you know for a FACT that it wasn't in use? Could he just have a light out? Seems like a waste if so .
@opiateofthemasses10 жыл бұрын
jondano Yeah that's the vid I saw as well...weird if he really wasn't using it...seems like a wasted opportunity to me lol. It's seems especially strange since he has each of them set for quite significantly different tone characteristics...I know the bluefaces sound a bit different, but they cant be THAT different.
@jondano10 жыл бұрын
He has the blueface set with the same settings as the silverface with the treble and presence set back a tad since the blueface is darker. The blueface is way less compressed than the silverface thats for sure. The silverface has more low end too. It's much more sonic sounding than the blueface. I do think jambi was recorded with a silverface or another amp that isn't even a diezel. What tubes are you running in your vh4? There has been talk for years that he is using 6L6 tubes but that is false information. The vh4 current has EL34's in it.

Hi, first of all awesome video, you're really close to Adam's tone! I'd like to ask, how much did you spent building a complete rig like that? Oh, and I love all these info vids, keep it up!

WOW! well played sir you really have all the stylized signatures and tonal accents of the man himself. what gear are you using. as an Adam Jones follower and an obsessive fan of TOOL i naturally want to play their music i have closely studied Adam Jones style and can play it all but i am a hobby rocker and haven't invested time and energy into setup ( I'm more obsessed with their message and philosophy). are you using duncan pickups? i see you have the 81 Gibson. is that original or is it the reproduction model? so many questions!!!! what ever your willing to share i would be glad to hear. thanks again and you keep on "giving blood and keeping the faith".

opiateofthemasses well, not any in particular... i was just wondering which one is mid boosted or bass boosted... damn, you're so close to adam's tone!
@edarevalo10 жыл бұрын
opiateofthemasses also your wah sounds awesome!
@opiateofthemasses10 жыл бұрын
ed arevalo Thanks man :) Well all of the settings for each amp are pretty similar, maxed mids is the priority. The main thing with the sound is just the different personalities of the amps blended together. The Diezel has a really tight bottom end and distortion, the boogie has a more loose and fizzy high mid distortion, and the marshall is just that standard classic mid heavy marshall crunch that kind of cleans everything up and adds stability.

No I didn't lol. it was a joke.
@clarkdale239410 жыл бұрын
opiateofthemasses The problem was that I didn't watch the whole video. But I think you really don't need blueface: you always have replicated Adam Jones tune pretty closer using Herbert. So, now with vh4+Plexi+Boggie you can conquer Poland :) Great video and better sound!

The dual rectifier definitely brings out the growl in the mids. Are you using the gain from the pre-amps or a pedal for the distortion?
@opiateofthemasses10 жыл бұрын
No distortion pedals at all, straight amp distortion :)
@gilllie66610 жыл бұрын
This might be ignorance, but why do people make a big deal if a person uses a distortion pedal? Is it indicative of an amp not having a high quality gain circuit? Which means it needs to be supplemented by this sort of pedal?
@MrDrums810 жыл бұрын
Yeah seriously, I genuinely couldn't tell whether Bottom was played by you or the Adam in the recent early 90's good quality audios of them playing it. If this wasn't your video I would have thought it was Adam.

Sounded fuckin sweet to me. I'm actually picking up a 78 Gibson silverburst like yours this next weekend. Thing is fuckin awesome can't wait. Eventually I'm going to get a virus and a pk5. Which I was wondering, did you just mess around with the virus until you got the right sound or what? Lookin forward to new vids, that boogie is sick.

Hey Opiate, when was Adam using the Marshall, the Boogie and the Diezel Silverface? Didn't he directly go from using the Marshall and one Diezel to Marshall and two Diezels?
@opiateofthemasses10 жыл бұрын
Adam was actually using the dual rectifier before the Diezel. He didn't get a Diezel until 96 I believe. Check out the "2 Metre Sessie" audio, or the corresponding Adam Jones from TOOL on his Gibson 'Les Paul' video from 1994 that's here on KZbin for reference. He was using the marshall and the Boogie in that. For all 3 check out pretty much any vid from the Aenima tour through the early Lateralus tour. Here's one from 98' Tool ~~ Live 1998/08/25 [Full/Uncut Concert] @ Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, Sacramento, CA around 12 mins in. He switched to the 2 Diezels after about a month into the Lateralus tour.
@whaleguy10 жыл бұрын
opiateofthemasses - well thanks for that comprehensive reply :) From the video, it seems you have Adam's tone nailed dead on. Btw, apologies if I sound like a complete noob but where did you get those animations that you played over the Lateralus section?

yeah that's pretty much how things went with the virus, just a bunch of fuck around time. Took me a while because I have no synth knowledge whatsoever.
