Zep never played a song the same way twice. Studio cuts were a "snapshot" of where the song existed at the time of an album release, but as they toured songs grew, evolved, morphed, and changed every single night. That is the beauty of Zep as a live band: they were experimental, unpredictable, real, raw, and spontaneous.

@@TrianglesAndCircles YES, exactly! 😂😂😂😂😂🤔🤔🤔🤔NO, IN fact, during the movie, in "DAZED AND CONFUSED", you can see, the security and the cops, arresting a man, remember?!... That guy, was saling some pictures, posters, and other stuffs, without the authorization of LED ZEP! And, it was the manager of the MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, who was letting them do that, and after, he was taking some money, of what they could sold during the concert! You can see, a scene, when Peter Grant is arguing with the Madison Square Garden promoter, and he told him, he knew, I was making some racket on them! It's about all those things, in the music industry, they were talking I think! With the phrase "the song remains the same"! Not in the song itself of course! This was Jonesy's showpiece number. In it, he would go bluesy, maybe a bit of classical, a dash of jazz influence, and more. In the movie, each member had a "fantasy sequence" and Jonesy's shows him as a highwayman, riding, marauding, up to all manner of shenanigans while out on the road, however he comes home and is a loving husband/father once again - pretty true to the man, himself.

I attended this concert in 73 when I was in high school. I went twice. They played at least 3 nights maybe 4, I can't remember. That is just what all the big groups did in MSG. The Song Remains the Same movie was recorded with samplings from at least two of these concerts. When you watch the movie you can see that Page and Plant wore the same clothes for consistency, but Jones changed clothes each night. I saw dozens of concerts at MSG back then since I was only a 10 minute train ride away and Zeppelin was by far the best "live" band to see.

I think a major reason the band always sounds so good is that each member is so in the pocket of the song with impeccable timing and rhythm. This is a great example. That riff is a slow grind, but Page never speeds up or rushes it. He plays it in a very disciplined way and the instruments and beat mesh perfectly. That’s why it pisses me off when people call Page sloppy - the man knew exactly how to play Zeppelin songs and maximize their impact on audience. He was a wizard.
@nathananderson8928
@nathananderson8928 Жыл бұрын
I agree... I think what Page was dealing with when people say he was sloppy is playing a song live, by himself, that had some 4 or more guitar parts overdubbed in the studio. It can't be done. in Achilles, he has 12 parts, how does one play that live alone? I can imagine he is struggling with how do I render this accurately while they also overlay their unique improvisational qualities from their live sets. It's more than any band or guitarist could do or would do. Keith Richards said they should add a guitarist, but the band didn't like that idea. Like Achilles, Page would rather go into battle, naked and alone and let the Gods decide his fate.

You are absolutely right. Jimmy knew what the fuck he was doing. If anything Page might have gotten sloppily when he went for it in the live setting. But every studio recording that went to print was recorded as Jimmy wanted it to be. If it sounds sloppy that's how he wanted it to sound. And that's how he played it ! Jimmy knew what he was doing, therefore when all of these armchair guitar players want to condemn Jimmy for it. Let's see where you're shit stands in 50+ years.

Zeppelin, and Page in particular, saved their bullets for live performances. This recording of No Quarter corroborates the supposition. That which the recorded often established the idea. Live, they would expand the concept. Thus, they often had a half dozen different arrangements for a song furthering the concept they were expressing with constant improvisation resulting in live performances that were often far more elaborate and engaging than what was put to vinyl - and what was put on vinyl was brilliant to begin with. This version of No Quarter live is stunning. The tone he attained for this particular solo is mesmerizing. It’s my favorite of his solos for that fact. I’ve heard versions of this solo in which he opens with an an arpeggio, in essence, of parallel octaves. Profoundly majestic and quite tasteful. It’s just a brilliant performance of a rock idiom masterpiece.

I saw this in the theatre when it came out, and (of course) I have the DVD. In this movie/concert each of the guys had a theme/fantasy sequence based on one of the songs. Roberts was The Song Remains the Same/The Rain Song, John Bonham's was Moby Dick, Jimmy's was Dazed and Confused, and this one was John Paul Jones. These themes would go back and forth between the live footage and the theme/fantasy video material. Even their manager Peter Grant has a video during the movie. I recommend that anyone that hasn't seen this entire movie...just buy the blue Ray, you won't regret it. Added bonus: you get to watch Jimmy do all the crazy sounds on his Theremin. ;)

Excellent reaction, Syed. I have 2 points. I think the inspiration for this song is the section of LOTR which describes the journey from Rivendell to Caradhras, where they were hunted down by wargs (large wolves... the "dogs of doom") and driven back from the mountain pass by snow. Every part is absolutely exquisitely played on this song, BUT, in live performance the weak link is Plant's voice. As good as it is now, and even more so as it was then, his technique wasn't great back then ,and it damaged his voice. You just can't force your head voice that hard, that much and not do damage, and this is particularly true on tour, where the voice gets little or no recovery time between performances. On this song it's fine. He nails it. But in live performance it is exposed by some of their other songs such as "Rock n roll". On the studio version all he needs is one good take, or enough material from several takes to put one good vocal track together. But live, the voice is exposed, and a singer may have to take fewer risks. If you listen to the studio version of "Rock n roll", then any live version, he always errs on the side of caution. If you thrash a guitar, you can change the strings. You can't do that with vocal cords.

Listening to both Zep & Tool again. Noticed Tool changed up the lyrics a bit, as in the line "They bring news that must get through Dying dreams in me and you". Plant sang "To build a dream for me and you". Small thing, but I think Tool's lyric makes more sense in context of overall sense of desolation ..."Dying Dreams". Plant speaks of 'building' dreams" for me and you. Building dreams seems to indicate hopes of a future. Just my musings. Nice to revisit this.

A true masterpiece. The theatrical movie release was subtitle, “Led Zeppelin live and beyond” which referred to the video sequences whereby each member had their own; Bonham was Moby Dick, Jone was No Quarter, Page was Dazed and Confused, Plant was The Song Remains the Same and Rain Song. Even Peter Grant had a video which is the opening scene that ends in a game of monopoly gone wrong. The pertinent song featured the individual member. Here, in the US, they’d show this movie into the 1990’s at midnight showings because many fans would’ve given a nut to see them live but never did. I myself had reserved tickets on September 25, 1980 to the 1980-81 World Tour which obviously, never happened. I later used those tickets to see Plant’s solo tour in 1983. I was fortunate to catch Page with Beck and Clapton at the ARMS Benefit and later Page/Plant in 1994-95 but never Led Zeppelin in their full glory. I’ve seen this movie hundreds of times and have the DVD. I also have the Soundtrack album in vinyl. I HIGHLY suggest you buy the DVD and watch it in its entirety. Regarding Page and the occult, he had a great curiosity in the teachings of Aliester Crowley and even purchased one of his mansions. You may answer some of your questions regarding Page but then have more questions regarding his curiosity if you watch ‘Dazed’ which was filmed in his backyard. Thing about live music in the 70’s and even the 80’s in contrast to the days of the Beatles who played 25-30 minutes amongst screaming teeny-boppers, is that we went to trip out and the artists prevailed with a jam. You look at Santana, a hardcore jam band. Greg Rollie and Neal Schon spun off and founded Journey. At first, they were a jam band until Perry arrived and made them commercial. That has always been the struggle between artists and labels. Led Zeppelin set a standard now known as AOR (Album Oriented Rock) by refusing to release singles and jamming your face live for over 3 hours - the greatest trip you can have.

Jimmy didn't purchase a Crowley mansion. It was a shooting lodge on the shore of Loch Ness. My wife and I stayed there in April 2000 for our anniversary. The then owner had bought it back into her family from Jimmy. Part of Jimmy's fantasy sequence were filmed at the Falls of Foyers near the lodge.

I was a lucky guy... I'm old enough to have seen them on this tour in a 3,000 seat theatre in Glasgow... Just amazing. Can still remember it. Christ it's nearly 50 years ago now... Wow wasn't I lucky...!! Keep on rocking.

Glad you got the chance to do this live version of No Quarter. The Tolkein angle to the lyrics is interesting, however I liked your interpretation based on the Norse Mythology. Maybe it's because it closely matches my own feelings since I first listened to the studio track. One thing about live vs. Studio versions, does the tempo of Page's haunting riff seem slightly slower on the live performance? It doesn't really take anything away from it, it's still amazing.

Watch the movie. You will see many of the live versions are better. Saw them at San Diego sports arena in 1977 ( tickets were $6.75) awesome show

I've been a big fan of Zepelin since the early-mid 80s and was able to see Plant and Page live in 1998, this was one of the songs they played and the entire show was fantastic. i can only imagine what they were like night in and night out on tour.

I so wish you would’ve gotten the original solo version off the original live album. It is absolutely one of the best pieces of music in the history of humanity. I stopped playing when I realize the version you had. You have the placebo. You have the Almost version. This was plugged together to go with the timing of the movie, because some of the cameramen were so stoned that they forgot to change the film and they were big sections of the concert that didn’t have Any video to go along. That’s also where they made the fantasy sequences, but this version is not the one. Look for the original off the live album
