@@barneymetcalfe8896 Sorry bruv, I don't see how Kline's Otto is Oscar worthy at all... I mean, it's a brilliantly portrayed character, but then that's the job of any decent actor to pull off. I just don't think there is enough of a dimensional character there to justify the win. We see Otto's anger, his childishness and stupidity, his ignorance, his arrogance...etc.. we never really glimpse anything deeper beneath the surface than the front he puts on to all but Jamie Lee Curtis. I know its a comedy but the best always have a bit of pathos somewhere down the line. The element of it here, was the torture of Palins character, Ken and his love of animals, made to watch as they all died around him....but Cleese chose to go the black comedy route which I think was probably correct. Sorry to ramble on mate, but that's just my opinion.

In regards to your cold open, Alfred Hitchcock had a similar sense of humor. He called it his elevator speech. No matter what was being said in the elevator, as soon as a stranger got on, Hitchcock would start in with a description of some horrifying, grizzly scene, until that stranger left, and then he'd just switch back to the other conversation. I had a friend in high school who, along with his brother, had similar lines, but they came up with impossible punchlines to nonexistent jokes which they'd say at bus stops and leaving the store or elevators. The only one I recall was, "So the penguin says to the nun, 'Jesus Christ, Rabbi! That's the hairiest lesbian I ever saw!'"

Then the cast reunited almost 10 years later to do "Fierce Creatures" which is a fun one for her, and you, to perhaps watch. They just have great chemistry together; Cleese, Curtis, Kline and Palin. Also fun fact, Portia[Pip in Fierce Creatures] is John Cleese's real daughter. Also another Monty Python alum reunion was "Splitting Heirs" with Cleese and Eric Idle plus the addition of Rick Moranis [always funny] and the little known actress in one of her first big productions, Catherine Zeta-Jones---think she would enjoy it as well if never seen before.

My favorite thing is that Kevin Kline won the Oscar for Best Supporting for Otto, and over in England, Michael Palin won the BAFTA for Best Supporting for Ken. As far as some fun trivia: Palin talked in his memoir about how kind everyone was -- he had just lost his sister before filming this, and was in a tough place, but Curtis and the cast were all very sweet and supportive to work with. Palin dedicated the performance to his father, who had had to battle a stammer (or "stutter") all his life, and based Ken's speech patterns on his Dad's. He also got a perm because he felt Ken was a softer character around the edges who should have curly hair. Palin also implied (in a nice, classy way) that Kline was slightly difficult to work with because he was very "Method" and would also require a huge number of takes, etc. But he also praised Kline's talent, and the whole experience as a positive one.

Then watching her check out of the movie for a while after the fish scene... yeah, called it! The filmmakers had a real struggle finding an ending that audiences liked, and did some reshoots to get it right. They tried at least one where JLC's character stuck with her double-crossing ways and left without Archie. Test audiences didn't like it though, so they went with the happy ending - it may not make the most sense from a character perspective, as you guys rightly say, but sometimes logic has to give way to audience satisfaction!

Kevin Cline did such a good job playing a character who ANYONE, Ghandi included, would happily gun down in the back, laughing.

'The Flick Picker' - glad you got that the right way around, as 'The Pick n Flicker' relates to a whole different activity 👍😀🖒

I had an aunt who was a fan of Kevin Kline and John Cleese. She loved crime movies and comedies, but she couldn't watch this movie. She had a stutter and was very sensitive about it. She couldn't stand to watch the way Kevin Kline treated Ken and how he was treated in general. "We did not lose Viet Nam! It was a TIE!" Such a great American line!

Palins father had a stutter. Ken was a homage to him.

This is my favourite comedy of all time, hands down. Kevin Kline is a genius as the psychopathic supremely ignorant Otto. Usually he plays rather refined and thoughtful individuals, but this was the complete opposite.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. The cast came back together to make another movie, Fierce Creatures (1994), because they all enjoyed working together so much on A Fish Called Wanda. It is good and worth a watch, but don't compare it to this movie.

FYI; 1- Wanda is an Angel Fish. 2- "WA" is British for the letter W. 3- Otto shouts "ass-hole" after several wrecks caused by the fact that Otto drives on the wrong side of the road.

Matthew looked like someone was speaking to him in tongues at the beginning there. Also, "IfdsakleahdskglsaughWANDA!" Pretty sure that was an angelfish at the beginning, btw.

rofl that intro was golden - I shared his mental whiplash so much I had to watch it again before resuming
