I saw this for the first time in the hospital recovering from a serious e-coli infection that almost killed me. It's an intestinal thing and I won't get into details, but suffice to say it's excruciating. My parents turned this movie on and left the room to go do something and I had to start frantically hitting the button to call a nurse because I couldn't keep from laughing and it was the most agonizing thing I'd ever felt. I actually remember watching Monty Python as being one of the standout hellish moments of the whole ordeal. It took a long time for me to watch it again.

The coconuts and the stopped battle at the end were Monty Python's answer to a very small budget when making this film. They couldn't afford to shoot a major battle or horses so they made jokes to cover the lack of funds. Just further proves that the members of Monty Python are comedic geniuses.

As kids in the mid-70's, we'd stay up very late to watch British shows like Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Goodies, Doctor in the House, The Young Ones, Benny Hill on PBS television here in the US. British humor is a bit different, and a lot of people may not get it, but I love it. This movie is so quotable, but this younger generation is losing out. So, I always recommend this to young'uns to pass it on. So very glad you watched it with your great laugh, Emma.

It was common in the middle ages for opposing armies at battle to shout insults at each other and during sieges of castles and walled cites the defenders would throw dead animals and other junk at the attackers and during the Plague someone would go around a pick up the dead. It is the wonderful talent of Monty Pythoners that they turn historical reality into jokes.

Monty Python had a HUGE effect on comedy in the English speaking world - they did something like 43 episodes of half an hour in length and all are stream-of-consciousness They also singlehandedly popularlized the word "spam" to mean annoying emails. I recommend you do the other three movies, starting with "And Now For Something Completely Different", which is largely a series of remakes of their TV show sketches.

That was a great reaction to this kind of movie Emma, because it's so absurd when you first watch these guys perform this kind of silly humor that really isn't duplicated by anyone else. I fell in love with the Monty Python comedy gang when they first started doing their half hour comedy show on BBC before this movie came out because it was so unique and I'd never seen anything like this before. Your laughter can be infectious Emma, that's something about you that I think people like, but I was shocked when you told us that you'd seen in Germany naked men playing instruments with their asses???!!! I must admit I don't think I could watch something like that myself, it would be way too embarrassing for me to handle.

Hi Emma! And on top of everything, this was filmed on a very tight budget. All those castles they visited was, in reality, just one castle, dressed differently to make it look like another castle. Because the deductive reasoning in the witch scene involves a duck, reminds of the section on logic in my math class. Don't remember how the problem went, but the answer was something like "all ducks are officers, but not all ducks are officers." It was presented in such a way so you wouldn't have preconceived biases and would simply follow the logical progression.

There’s two reasons why they didn’t use horses. The had a very small budget so they couldn’t afford to rent a bunch of horses and nobody knew how to ride a horse and they lacked the money and time to have their people take lessons. It’s one of the classic bits in the movies but it’s the result of circumstances not intent. They also ended the movie like they did because they were basically out of money and couldn’t afford a big fight scene.

The movie is hilarious, and silly (which is what one needs to remember most about Monty Python's comedy, silly was their main objective) and also very, VERY smart. The British members of Monty Python all went to either Cambridge or Oxford, and among other things Graham Chapman (King Arthur) trained as a Doctor and John Cleese (Sir Lancelot) trained as a lawyer. The American, Terry Gilliam, I don't remember what university he went to but his main contributions were some of the weird side characters (like the bridge guardian) and all of the animations, which is a style he pretty much invented). I really enjoyed your reaction and the joy you clearly got out of the movie. Since you have a musical background, I would strongly recommend you check out the Stage Musical of this, called Monty Python's Spamalot, which is somewhat less absurdist, but has some great songs that will probably have you doubled over laughing.
