As kids in the mid-70's, we'd stay up very late to watch British shows like Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Goodies, Doctor in the House, The Young Ones, Benny Hill on PBS television here in the US. British humor is a bit different, and a lot of people may not get it, but I love it. This movie is so quotable, but this younger generation is losing out. So, I always recommend this to young'uns to pass it on. So very glad you watched it with your great laugh, Emma.

I saw this for the first time in the hospital recovering from a serious e-coli infection that almost killed me. It's an intestinal thing and I won't get into details, but suffice to say it's excruciating. My parents turned this movie on and left the room to go do something and I had to start frantically hitting the button to call a nurse because I couldn't keep from laughing and it was the most agonizing thing I'd ever felt. I actually remember watching Monty Python as being one of the standout hellish moments of the whole ordeal. It took a long time for me to watch it again.

As a lifelong Monty Python enthusiast, I have always loved this goofy film. The coconuts have more to do with available funding than intentional comedy. (but it worked). If you want to see one as funny with more of a plot and a lot more funding try their "Life of Brian". Good reaction, glad you enjoyed them.

Hi Emma! And on top of everything, this was filmed on a very tight budget. All those castles they visited was, in reality, just one castle, dressed differently to make it look like another castle. They couldn't afford horses (except for the horse when the famous historian was killed) so they invented the coconut shell gag. Silly stuff, but I love this movie! - Thomas

It was common in the middle ages for opposing armies at battle to shout insults at each other and during sieges of castles and walled cites the defenders would throw dead animals and other junk at the attackers and during the Plague someone would go around a pick up the dead. It is the wonderful talent of Monty Pythoners that they turn historical reality into jokes.

A great movie, if this is your type of humor. Also check out THE RUTLES: ALL YOU NEED IS CASH. It was a 1978 TV movie for NBC, and is hilarious. "The Rutles are a living legend. A living legend that will live on long after other living legends have died." - Eric Idle, Narrator

There is a great story about the time the German Government invited these guys to give a lecture on comedy and how to be funny. And when their flight landed the limo the German Government sent, took the guys straight to Auschwitz. And the boys said, lesson number one, don't start your tours by taking guests directly to Auschwitz. * They actually managed to figure out who the real historical King Arthur was. His name was *King* *Owain* *Danwyn* *Arth* or "Arthur"(either of which, means "Bear" or "The Bear"), in 440 AD. His capital was "Viroconium Cornoviorum"(now "Wroxeter"), in the county of Shropshire, England. King Danwyn Arthur is believed to have won battles against the Anglo-Saxons and the Romans. King Danwyn is also believed to have revolutionized swordsmithing involving a big, roughly rectangular stone that the blade is put in(I forget the process), and the first time he pulled the sword out of said stone, must've given rise to the legend of when Arthur pulled the sword from the stone, which made him king because these new swords were going to be a game changer on the battlefield. * So, that alone made him seem like a savior. It also strongly suggests that Danwyn was a very intelligent, gifted swordsmith before becoming king. It is believed that he was taught this method by the cult or sect that "The Lady of the Lake" was a member of that lived along this lake. They may have been the last of the druids. They believe they even found the actual lake that she is alleged to have emerged from(according to legend). Some have even suggested draining the lake so they can search for Excalibur, and then using metal detectors and ground penetrating radars to assist in trying to find it. * My question is this: "What makes them think that the lady of the lake left the sword *IN* the lake?" Then there are those who believe that the lady of the lake was an alien masquerading as human, and taught Danwyn this new method of swordsmithing but, you know..........who knows? The real historical "Merlin" is believed to be *Ambrosius* *Aurelianus* and was instrumental in helping Danwyn Arth defeat the Romans and the Saxons. Aurelianus was also known by a couple other names, such as: "Emrys Wledig" and "Ambrose Aurelian". Some accounts claim that Aurelianus was Danwyn's uncle, as well as a prophet, and was later referred to as a wizard, but there again...........who knows?

Because the deductive reasoning in the witch scene involves a duck, reminds of the section on logic in my math class. Don't remember how the problem went, but the answer was something like "all ducks are officers, but not all ducks are officers." It was presented in such a way so you wouldn't have preconceived biases and would simply follow the logical progression.

There’s two reasons why they didn’t use horses. The had a very small budget so they couldn’t afford to rent a bunch of horses and nobody knew how to ride a horse and they lacked the money and time to have their people take lessons. It’s one of the classic bits in the movies but it’s the result of circumstances not intent. They also ended the movie like they did because they were basically out of money and couldn’t afford a big fight scene.
