VENUSIAN FLYOVER
In this latest video, the target of interest is the second planet from the Sun, Venus. We begin by diving into its clouds of sulphuric acid and then fly over its surface for a short distance to view its desolate, volcanic landscape. Although there appear to be no active volcanoes at present.
Venus truly is a hell hole. It's the hottest planet in the Solar System - even hotter, somewhat paradoxically, than Mercury, which is closer to the Sun. And the reason for this is Venus' super-dense atmosphere. It's a thick shroud of carbon dioxide, around 93 times denser then Earth's own skies, and all that gas has created what astronomers call a runaway greenhouse effect, trapping the heat and keeping it there. It's a stark reminder of just what greenhouse heating can do. The average temperature here is a staggering 460 degrees Celsius or 860 Fahrenheit. Leave a slab of lead, zinc or tin on the surface rocks and it'll literally melt. And because of the atmosphere's incredible density, its pressure is roughly equivalent to 900 metres underwater here on Earth. Not a hospitable place.
