A Football Journey: Gary Danielson (S1 E1)

Hello and welcome to the start of not only a brand new series, but a brand new channel. A Football Journey is going to be a series about sharing the story of a singular NFL player throughout history. In today's pilot episode, I have chosen a relatively unknown older quarterback.

Gary Danielson was an effective leader, although in a quiet way. His arm was accurate and strong, not exceptionally strong, and had adequate mobility and flair. But Danielson was INT-prone and injury prone for Detroit from 1976-'84, and tended to get down on himself and go to pieces when things went bad in Detroit. Danielson's greatest legacy may have been from playing in Cleveland in 1985. Fast forward to Marino World's Spike Fake in 1994 to beat the Jets. Marino World had learned about the spike fake from 1994 Dolphin backup QB Bernie Kosar who learned it back in 1985, Kosar's rookie season, in Cleveland, from Gary Danielson. In 1985, playing for a rapidly improving Cleveland Brown team, Danielson had great field vision and savvy, and never got rattled under pressure. A game late in the season of 1985 between Browns and power house NY Giants showed QB Danielson at his best.

Lots of inaccuracies.....Danielson started the 1983 Playoff game because Hipple was injurred. He did appear in the 2 last games in 1981. Surprised there was no mention of his 1978 performance against the Vikings when he threw for 5 tds. He was TRADED to the Cleveland Browns in 1985, he didn't "sign" with them.
