Sima clan and its loyalist: we're a genius either he became a hostage in the capital, or immediately rebel using his "miniscule" (by miniscule i mean around 100k) amount of garrison troops of shoucun Messenger: Zhuge dan defected to wu and started rebelling Sima zhao: God damnit

no this was the most ideal outcome, the main concern is that Zhuge Dan could rally other Wei loyalists to join in a bigger scale rebellion against Sima Zhao. Once he defected to Wu, he became public enemy number one within Wei and whether you were a Wei loyalist or just an ambitious neutral party, you automatically had to side with Sima Zhao here or else you would be seen as a traitor to the state.

I can be greatly mistaken in my assumption but i think the major factor that had outline the final result of this was the terrain conditions that each army faced in this uprising: The Wei army under command of Sima Zhao was a dispersive terrain where they were fighting in a familiar place whose main necessity lies in maintaining the entire army under total control of the general,a tactic that Sima Zhao utilized with very efficient in the supressing of Zhuge Dan's rebellion. The Wu army on the other hand seemed to be in a serious terrain where they were deeply intrinched in the enemy's territory needing extra caution in the maintaning of the supply line with the city of Shouchun someting that with Sun Chen's eventual retreat and Zhu Yi's defeats and execution denied the chance of victory for them. Now in the case of Zhuge Dan his position,power and popularity in the south put it him in a key position in Schouchun where he can defend himself without any major danger but with risk of been isolated in siege with little chance of survival in a dire situation.

the character is pronounced both Liang and Jing but for his name it should be Jing (my mistake)

@@SeriousTrivia ah ok no worries im easy to confuse, Zhuge Liang and others would have fun toying with me if i was a leader back then on the enemy side, I'd be a prefect taking out bandits in the region then facing off against super pros

Zhuge Xu was another Zhuge but not directly related to Liang, Jin or Dan. He was a relative I think. He would partake in the conquest of Shu as one of the commanders. Also his daughter would be one of Sima Yan's concubines.

@SeriousTrivia There are precedents for this, I can think of Dong Zhuo refusing promotion to stay close to his power base on the grounds of "my men wouldn't let me go", of course it was another dynasty, another time and even in his time it was a big risk. There probably were similar cases that I don't remember now. I have great difficulty believing that "if your boss wants you dead, you die" even though you have hundreds of thousands of troops under your command.

You are right. For his name, it should be referred to as Jing. Yue Chen is only mentioned historically for this and his participation in putting down the Guanqiu Jian rebellion so you can’t really pin him down as anything
