There are often villains with evil and cruel plans, sometimes they are even creepy. But I think I've rarely felt this sense of uneasiness (somewhat even dread) as while the Doctor was erased like this. Then a huge relief by the end of the episode. Loved that!

That's my major gripe with Chibnall's era. Some scenes are just brilliant I'm every possible way. However with nothing coherent to pull a story together these scenes become standalone moments from otherwise poor episodes. Which goes to show that the elements were there; Jodie, the score, the direction, the art style. Most of it did work. But the poor storylines just couldn't bring it all together.

As far as I'm concerned, this was a real incarnation of the Doctor. Time Lords (including the Master) have been known to exert control over the regenerative process through willpower. With technology, surely, a regenerating body could be customized. If the Master could get everything just right, with memories and personality and brain structure and such, then it's just an incarnation of the Timeless Child that looks and acts like the latest version of the Master. Also pretty wild how the other lives can rebel against that much forced control and undo the regeneration. So, like, even though the Tenth Doctor ended with "I don't want to go", he knew he had to. Nothing inside their collective wisdom allowed the Tenth Doctor to interfere with the emergence of their next body.

So, if we take both this forced regeneration and the degeneration into account, Ncuti, who is the 14th person to play an incarnation of the Doctor, is the 15th Doctor because of Tennants return, and he's the 17th with the forced regeneration and degeneration counting as 2, but he's also the 18th with the Metacrisis Doctor, AND the 19th if you include the War Doctor. Then we have the Ruth Doctor, the timeless child (which we see 7 of). Hence Ncuti is also the 26th Doctor. So if my knowledge if complete, which I don't claim it to be, Ncuti is the 14th-26th Doctor at least.

Doesn’t it take about a day for the regeneration to completely take hold? That’s how Tennant was able to have the hand for the metacrisis. Melody also survived a bunch of gunshots right after regenerating into River because she was still in the early stage of the regeneration. The body’s unstable at that point. I think the whole process of 13 to Master to 13 to 14 was one regeneration. The form was being remolded before it finally set. After The Timeless Child it kinda became a fool’s errand to keep track of and number regenerations.

In the Guardians of the Edge scene, it was said that 13 wasn't ready to give in and allow the Master to become the next incarnation, which would have been the 14th Doctor. While the Master-Doctor was in that post regeneration limbo stage, Yaz was able to reverse the process and bring 13 back.

I never really cared for this interpretation of the master and especially not this version of the doctor, but this really did take the cake for just easily one of the dumbest plots probably the entire era. Like so many of the specials it uses a simple and enthralling premise and somehow does it in the most unsatisfying and uninteresting way possible. I was even sure that the beardless master at the beginning saying he was totally sure he was right would turn out to actually be the doctor master and that's why he was so sure but instead it was just a bizarre way to show the masters plot. Tennant is 14, Gatwa is 15, according to RTD himself. The master wasn't truly the doctor, so he doesn't count.

Counting the War Doctor and the Metacrisis Doctor, and giving the Master and the second 13 a new number each, Tennant would then be number 18 and Gatwa 19. The actual numbering that people use is of course not affected since none since 9 would be accurate by that standard anyway. Same with the Pre-Hartnell Doctors. I'd personally assume it does not count because it was reverted with regen energy from someone else, shortly after the original regeneration which was not caused by injury. But since it's not clearly stated, it is kinda up to anyone's interpretation whether the second 13 is the same or a new incarnation (like Tentwo was).

In all honesty this episode kind of ruined the Master because he is the supposed to be both the Doctor's greatest enemy and at the same time his oldest friend which is a great dichotomy between the two exemplified by both the Saxon Master trying to kill/torture the Doctor and with Missy trying to renew their friendship albeit in a twisted way but the Sacha Master wanted to become the Doctor, REALLY?, what were the writers smoking when they came up with this plot twist? After the Doctor's conversation with Time itself I was expecting the Master to be leading an army the scope of which hasn't been seen since the flipping Pandorica but nooo we got a plot twist that is completely out of character for the Master except for classic self's desire to extend his own life
