First off, me. Second off, I hate everyone who mistook that for apathy because I can tell you that that's honest, genuine care combined with the inability to express empathy on the fly. She knows her friend is scared, but she doesn't know what to say to comfort him, so she's telegraphing: *Hey, I want to comfort you right now, but I need a minute to process this so I don't accidentally make things worse.* If someone said that to me, I'd probably cry.
@capaldiskidneys3 жыл бұрын
i agree. when i watched that moment i was touched. it didn't seem insensitive, on the contrary tbh. the doctor is very reserved by nature, and especially in s12, so by verbalizing her lack of control in the situation made me feel as though she was opening up to graham and making herself vunerable, just like he probably felt when he opened up to her about his cancer. council of geeks has a fantastic video on it :)
@JontyLevine3 жыл бұрын
It's actually a really great scene for establishing the Doctor as a relatable human being. But here's the thing about that: _she's not human._ Not remotely. She is (supposed to be) _more than human,_ someone who has seen far worse things throughout the centuries and still manages to maintain an inspiringly upbeat attitude. Because if there's *one thing* the Doctor does better than anyone else, it's bringing out the best in the people around him... or her, but I can't recall a time when Thirteen has done that. In a vacuum, this dialog says more about the Doctor that it does about Graham, which _could_ have actually been taken in an interesting direction. Like if the Doctor was genuinely suffering from a rare crisis of confidence, and is no longer able to give inspiring speeches, perhaps as the result of losing her home planet, this would be a potential avenue to develop the character. But the arc is just abandoned after that one scene. And the Doctor's _sOciAL AwKwArDnEss_ is never brought up again. So the characterisation feels accidental, incomplete. And all it does is make her look like a bad friend to Graham for no reason. Besides, she has a time machine and there are cures for cancer in the future. She _is_ a bad friend.

@@JontyLevine "wah wah wah inconsistent characterization/plot" Please refer to literally any era of Doctor Who to see why I couldn't give a fuck. Never have I ever seen someone miss the point so hard. The Doctor has always been a deeply, deeply flawed individual and every scene that highlights that is so good and valuable. Or did you just slop into this fandom yesterday to complain about a woman being in the leading role?

@@russelllahna2268 "Stop disliking an episode I like! Or I'll call you a sexist fake fan!!!! 😡😡😡" And for what it's worth, I've been watching since 2005. Yes, I can overlook the inconsistent storylines because what show doesn't have those? But broken characterisation is far less forgivable. Thirteen isn't just different from the last four Doctors - she can't even be the same character as _herself in a different scene._ Of course the Doctor has plenty of flaws (what made you think I was denying that?), but when the writers just give her brand new flaws for the sake of one scene and have the characters act like that's always been the case (emphasis on: "STILL quite socially awkward"), that's bad writing.
@russelllahna22683 жыл бұрын
@@JontyLevine Ok. Lemme start by saying that 13 isn't actually my favorite Doctor (that goes to 12, 8, or 6 in the Big Finish audios, depending when you ask me). However, I have found 13's characterization to be... way more consistent than you seem to want it to be. Certainly more consistent than 11's bipolar demeanor. She, much like her predecessor, strikes me as a heavily autistic coded character in many respects. She IS consistently socially awkward, to the point where other characters question why they're trusting her. However, she's also consistently GUARDED, which contributes to that awkwardness. And I mean [gestures at 9, 10, and 11] this isn't exactly a new thing. The Doctor usually keeps their secrets pretty close to their chest, especially [gestures at 7] when those secrets might alter their companions' opinions of them. 13 is just way better at masking than some of her predecessors. Like. It pretty much made sense the first time I watched it, and my second watch put a lot of details I missed into perspective, especially in series 12. 13 really IS consistent and complex if you're actually paying attention. Sorry you missed that, but I'd really give it another watch. There are no "bad" incarnations of the Doctor. To say that isn't just a disservice to the performers, but to the character itself. Doctor Who is inherently transformative and inconstant, both as a series and as a character, and I'm sorry that you've somehow missed that. All that said, I can't wait for series 13.

Her last 3 incarnations didn't exactly part with most of their companions under the best circumstances (I'd say last _8_ if it weren't for the fact that Nine broke the cycle while War never had companions as far as I know), and Ten (and Five, and Seven, and Eight) in particular ended his life in a very downer note, and while more bittersweet, Twelve still died alone. Can't blame her for not wanting to go through that again, and at worse, become Time Lord Victorious again, especially with the Valeyard being just around the corner

And while she’s like a different person, the energy is the same. With each regeneration, a lot of the weight and baggage from the last regeneration fades away, which makes me wonder - how does each regeneration remember old memories? She must feel them to some degree because she’s so afraid to let anyone in because her companions always either leave her willingly or die… but she also becomes brand new like they don’t affect her anymore. Thoughts anyone?
@sheersternfeld1914 Жыл бұрын
I always imagine it as some sort of a memory of a story, like when watching a movie. She knows it happened, but she can't really remember what she thought, or what she felt. Also, I'm imagining right now 12 cringing at 10's "Time lord victorious" phase. So, enjoy having this picture stuck in your head as well!

Mostly they're down on her because she's written as more helpless than all the other Doctors, and doesn't exude as much authority as they did. Whether that's up to her being a female doctor, her particular acting style, or the writing taking an inopportune turn during her run, is up to interpretation.

I created a Doctor Who universe where the Doctor is always a woman and they are all infinitely better than Jodie. But I must also point out that like personality and race, the Doctor's sexual orientation also changes in regeneration. Some of my female Doctors are heterosexual and some are homosexual

@@sheersternfeld1914 Don't quote me on it but I'm sure I read that Chibnall put this in as just a bit of levity, it was this that triggered the avalanche of Thasminites. yeah...no. 13 has brought life and fun to the Doctor yes, in comedy very similar to 10, yes. But to say she is just 10 played by someone else? Show me her pain, show me her fury, show me the lonely traveler who's been alive longer than anyone else who has so much bottled up pain they can't bare to share it with anyone and are afraid to hurt anyone they come close to, show me the unforgiving lord of time. 10 was a comedian, but behind his laughter was sadness, and pain. A sadness that 13 does not show. If you really need to compare her, I guess she's like 11? But in truth, she's just 13, she really is her own Doctor. 10 is jolly, but broken. 13 is carefree and hopeful. One line separates 10 and 13 so clearly. "No second chances. That's the sort of man I am." And 13 isn't that Doctor. The line to describe 13? One of 12's final lines. "Doctor, be kind."
