A Forgotten Ghost Town in the Middle of Nowhere - Driving the backroads in Texas we discover a forgotten ghost town in the middle of nowhere!!! With more history to see here than in other Texas ghost towns like Lobo or Thurber, you would think this place would be crawling with tourists. Not so. As we explore the historic remains of Texas' only silver mining town, we find ourselves entirely alone, surrounded only by the dead! To see what's been forgotten & left behind in what was once a booming mining town, watch this episode of SightseeingSally.
About me: I grew up in a small town the Midwest. Now I drive America's backroads exploring small towns, forgotten places, local history and more!

I love old faded cemeteries like this. I love all cemeteries, but old faded ones like this just have an extra aura of mystery and sadness because of all the names and graves that can't be seen anymore. check out some of the old cemeteries in Nevada and Arizona when you guys get a chance 🤙

Everyone always forgets about New Mexico where you will find graves from Europeans hundreds of years before the 1850 you might find in a neighboring state. Yes state. You don’t need a password to go to a US state from a US state.. Lol.. 1600’s. 1700’s.. Way before any generation even imagined going west. Of course native graves are tens of thousands of years old across America.

Clint Eastwood had the crew and production supporting crew, write their names on a cross. All of those crosses had the name of someone that helped make the movie. I suppose that's rich-guy humor. "You'll work hard or else. We already have a grave for you."

It was nice to hear you say to be mindful of the people who still lived in Shafter. I live in a small community & many people, not from my area, consider it a "ghost town". But those of us who live here do not consider our community that. It doesn't stop the people from coming into town, going into buildings & taking pictures, even though it is clearly marked as private property. Having people come in who show no respect to the citizens of our community make us a little standoffish & not one to answer their questions about OUR property.

Agree with you, but it would be interesting if one of the residents would’ve talked to Sally about living in such an out of the way area. Not to intrude on the residents but just add some insight. BTW, when I lived in San Francisco there was an interesting building/property around the corner from me. Tourists would gaggle in front and try to look inside but if the owner was outside watering her small garden they would get a surprise shower! That got rid of tourists fast! 😁

It's a shame that much of the property is now fenced in and can't be accessed. The last time I was there it was no problem to explore all around the ruins of mining operations. I can see where people might fall down into something, likely caused by taking selfies, so it's understandable that the owner would want to keep people out. I should have made many more photos. It's a fascinating old town.

Shafter was played by Gary Busey in the film "Rough Riders". Busey played him as a drunken exhibitionist, which likely says more about Busey than it does about Shafter. I have driven by the town and saw the church from a distance. It was a late summer evening, and the shadows were lengthening. Very moody, and coincidentally I had a tape of the Montenegro versions of the Morricobe soundtracks as I drove by, and thought--- this is the kind of place this music was written about. I had node all that stuff was there, or I would have pulled in. Have you been to Chianti Hotsprings?

My mother had a hair dryer like that one in the old house. She set her hair in curlers and pin curls and dry it completely so she wouldn't have to go to bed with wet hair, then she'd take out the curlers and pin curls in the morning. I have no idea what happened to that contraption and I'm the one who cleaned out her house after she died and got it ready for sale. Do you suppose the people who left that one in their old house ever wonder about it?
