Entire ghost town in California

An empty town in California complete with a school, church, firehouse, stores, even a morgue!
Traveling through California I stopped off at the incredible Redwoods! So amazing to see these giants in person. From there I went on to explore Bodie, an incredibly preserved town in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Bodie was a thriving mining town way back in the 1800's but as time went on it became less and less populated until the 1940's when it was all but abandoned. It was eventually taken over by the state, protected and preserved. Such a cool experience to walk around this place.

Just so you know, all that stuff left at Bodie, I had a summer job in the late 1970's where I worked for California State Parks. One of my jobs was to go with the crew that maintained the area around Bodie and part of that was to maintain the "look" of the rooms and put "artifacts" in the buildings. Sometimes animals make too big of a mess, and sometimes things just get taken. Most of its just junk we find at the swap meets around Bishop and that area anyway. If anyone goes there, please leave things alone, and don't mess it up.

Crystal 00 you are right about the non authentic part but why would people in a dying town leave anything useful laying about. At least the state attempted to preserve the History. I live near Philadelphia and the furniture at Independence hall is correct for the period but was not there during the revolution, the British destroyed it for fire wood.

@WootTootZoot, what a fun thing to do! In the ‘50’s things weren’t like now! The store has so much more stuff in it now, and I guess you explained why! I watch for Bodie stuff on eBay...I like to collect old pictures of the place...there are often old checks and other records available. ☺️ It’s so cool that you got to be a part of Bodie’s restoration! Michael Garcia that’s amazing! I’ve been watching videos about the Hopi! When they went to the UN In 1993 w/the other 5 tribes, etc.. AMAZING stories of their prophecies & of others & their origins! Great that you know all this! Puts things into perspective & makes more sense now, as to what is really going on & has gone on here on Earth! The “ruddy complexion” =red! Makes much sense! Plus all these huge buildings supposed to have been created by a people who came here who used horses...I’m thinking these great buildings were already here...looks like Rome or Greece was everywhere! I’ve heard of Giants of Tartaria...Canada to Russia, depending on the different maps of the different time periods! Very interesting! I remember reading of the fringes of leather talked about in Israelite clothing! Always made me think of those of Turtle Island.

I’ve visited many abandoned mining towns around Colorado. This is truly a gem with so many buildings. Got nothing but respect for history like this. In my hometown Wichita we have an authentic Cowtown with numerous original structures dating to 1870’s. It is a must see if your into a glimpse of life 140 yrs ago.

I camped near Bodie, and the winds were so hard that my dinner and pan blew OFF the camp stove, even with the windguards up. Thankfully a nearby town was still open to get for dinner.

Of course, we have documentaries that you can learn how they've lived back in the day, and you hear stories....but it's just completely different than learning from someone that's lived in that time, seeing photos, videos.... and even homes or a town set up like that one! I love this! The wood on the buildings is really beautiful. Anyone else notice the hole in the lid of one of the caskets? They used to put a thick glass in them. But I've never researched why. Thank you for sharing your awesome videos!

So you can view the body at the funeral. Nothing superstitious. They did tie strings to the limbs of the deceased when they buried them that was connected to a bell above ground. If it turns out you weren't dead the watchman was supposed to alert them to dig you up. This is where the term 'Dead Ringer' came from. I can't make this stuff up.

Sequoias and redwood trees don't drop their acorns until they are partially burned. Fire causes their acorns to open up, causing the seeds to become active. So, even something as destructive as fire does positive things. Bodie is an amazing place. Love this video!

The shot of you coming around the trunk of that tree is the best shot of perspective I've ever seen---and I had a weird thought: "Boy, it's a good thing the chipmunks and squirrels aren't proportioned to _match!"_ Bodie is amazing, fascinating, and somehow doesn't give the same sad vibes most abandoned places give. This is the best presentation of a "ghost town" I've seen yet. (And no mention of the "Bodie Curse!")

Chris, imagine my excitement when I see you filming the Redwoods in my 'backyard', at Stout Grove, just minutes from Crescent City, CA. You did a wonderful job of capturing feeling of the forest, and the size of the trees which is hard to do. And you were brave to enter a burned out tree, I expected to see t-p on the ground lol. Redwood roots are only 6ft deep, they hold each other up, if one goes down the surrounding ones are soon to follow. Bodie, CA was the first 'ghost town' I went to as a child, then living in s cal. It was 1968, I was amazed as I walked around looking into the windows. I think it was then that I became interested in history. Thank you for all the best in one video, it s actually my first, and I look forward to watching more of your great videos. Well done!

The idea is not to fix them but as he said they call it arrested decay meaning they basically let nature take its course and just do the minimal amount to slow down the decay.

I slept inside a burned out tree on jackass ridge just north of Westport CA., in April 1979, but NOT before I cleaned out all the bones that were in there!!! What an experience that was :--)))

I love your videos, you're very talented. There is something you should know about Bodie: EVERYTHING has been moved around to create an 'attraction' for people. Not necessarily to deceive people, and I'm sure it was done with good intentions. In the several times that I've been to Bodie, I've seen quite a lot of things moved around since my previous visit. For example, I see fenders for one type of car placed against a different car...its done to make it look 'better' and more 'complete'. Even in this video you can see the circa 1920 open touring car with a steering wheel from a 'who-knows-what' stuck into the center of the instrument panel. Oh please! You yourself have seen many other ghost towns, and you know darn well that newspapers don't lay on a dresser for 100 years. Look carefully, even very large equipment has been moved to other locations in the name of safety and 'appearance'. Here's a good thing about this town: it establishes the idea of protecting and preserving without restoring (an arrested state of decay)...and it's this very same approach I use for my vintage equipment. Bodie is a must-see for anyone interested in historical sites and equipment. Just remember that man has been in Bodie a long time too, and when they tell you that "its exactly as they left it", its a lie said for your entertainment...like Santa or the Easter bunny. The park needs to stop spreading 'fake news', or else who knows where the lies will end?

A California resident most of my life, I've been all over that State, and even up in the Bridgeport area down from Lake Tahoe, area but not to Bodie, so thank you for your very interesting video -- I love old ghost towns, they can still tell so much! I always loved going to the Redwoods, and did it fairly often. Angel's Camp is fun, Murphys, Sonora, and white-water rafted a number of rivers in California over the years, and always tried to take in some of these out-of-the-way historical places. They're so fascinating! There are some very interesting ghost towns all over, IF you know where to find them. But few are as maintained as Bodie Those old "mining-days" towns have some very interesting histories!

Bodie sits so high in the mountains that it is closed in the winter due to snow and cold. The mines worked 24 hours a day so the town never slept. And there were more bars than other towns, for obvious reasons. But never , never take anything home.

I can't begin to tell you how much I truly love that someone - you of course Chris - took the time to take me to such amazing places I'll never get the chance to do so in person myself. I only happened to come across you by mere chance & coincidence, and not the least bit sorry nor regretful. This filming is from 3 years ago, but, you have such a presence of connecting, to make it seem and feel like I'm right there alongside you, in a sense. I mean, those huge, gigantic, humongous trees, and actually walking inside of one - again, I can't thank you enough for doing so, also, something I'll never get to do myself, so this is the next best thing to being there. Absolutely amazing. And then too, the ole ghost town. I'm not even there with you, but yet I could literally feel as if tho my presence were there. I could feel the aura in each of the buildings you guided me thru. Talk about breathless, speechless. Question: was there anything there at all, alive & living, whether it be ants, bees, spiders, or any other kind of bug or insects there? birds of any kind? I'm ever so curious to know this. There are numerous drive-through trees in California. It was a "thing" back in the old days. The one that fell over was a Giant Sequoia in Calaveras Big Trees State Park, which is in central California. One Giant Redwood drive-through tree I am familiar with is the Chandelier Tree, in Leggett CA (NorCal). It is still alive and well: www.drivethrutree.com/

From Texas, In July 2017 the wife, kids and I went on a 4070 mile road trip over 16 days, we went to both of these places. The Sequoia trees were absolutely amazing, a very humbling experience. Well worth the beautiful winding road up the mountain to get there. The only disappointing part was there are signs that clearly state to stay on the trails, but adults and kids run rampant everywhere. Many of them loading the cars with pine cones. The foot traffic is so great that ground is compacted around many of the areas. Bodie is awesome, the kids would run from one building to the next just to see what was in each building. We found out about Bodie because Bodie is one of the coldest towns in the continental US several times a year and they post this on our local news cast. The reason we went to Bodie is our sons name is Bodie. Bodie is in the middle of nowhere, several of the park Rangers live onsite, due to the distance to a bigger town. BTW, take Tioga pass road out of Yosemite to get to Bodie, the drive is absolutely beautiful...……. especially for a farm boy that grew in the middle of a flat cotton patch. Nothin like a Great American Road Trip with the family. Very blessed!

Ive been to bodie 3 years ago and when i was there they were the state park workers were re roofing 2 houses next to the church and the house with alot of windows with the bottles in it

It cost $8/ person and $2 for the nice booklet with all the maps and legends. Bring cash and lots of water. Thirteen miles from US 395 south of Bridgeport, California, but about 3 miles of the road is gravel, unpaved.

There were periods of rapid decline, but I don't think people were forced out (as dramatic as that sounds). I think it was a matter of people taking what they could carry and leaving what wasn't. There was a big fire in 1932 that really spelled the end to the town. It was the second big fire, and it was started by a kid playing with matches...Bodie Billy.

What amazed me when I visited the redwoods of California was not only the tremendous size of them but the root system for those trees are only 6 feet below the surface and intertwine within each other to help stand tall & magnificent. Truly a site to see.
