Can you withstand the wrath and icy breath of King Frost? I probably couldn't, and I'm extremely glad to be reading this chilly frosty tale from a blanket fort of my own! BUT it is in line with the snowy wintery weather that is creeping up, so grab some hot cocoa and join me for tonight's fairy tale: "The Story of King Frost!" Come for the story, stay for the prophetic talking barking doggie!

Once upon a time there was a wicked stepmother, who loved her own daughter so much, but cared little for her husband's daughter. Ah yes, how well we know this tale! BUT this one has a wintery twist! I was getting "Snow Queen" and "Frozen" vibes very very strongly through this reading. Anyway, we follow a young kind girls who gets dumped off in the forest to freeze (by her father! On her stepmother's wish!) and is instead... not frozen, but rewarded due to her polite and humble nature. You know where this is going. The stepmother wants the same reward for her own daughter, and well... let's just read the rest together, shall we? This Russian fairytale, "The Story of King Frost," (or "The Story of the Frost King" is read in a soft voice and set to some light and soft background music. I do hope you enjoy the this evening's wintery fairytale!

So, my understanding as to why the first daughter is rewarded for her response is because she was respecting King Frost's status by not bothering him with her problems. So while she was lying, I don't think it was out of deceit, more out of not wanting to offend him.

I got that, but it's still teaching that you - girls especially - shouldn't ever "bother" others with their needs, but should rather suffer as so not to offend others. He's a King. So what? He's killing her. She's dying. It doesn't matter his rank or status. Her life is more important than arbitrary social classes.

I SCREAMED AS IT DAWNED ON ME: IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE RUSSIAN FOLKTALES (it was under the name Father Frost) besides Vasilissa the Beautiful and The Firebird variations of course ❤ And some people mightve answered your "question" but yes she was rewarded despite being near dead from freezing only coz the whole time she remained kind and was never rude in answering the Frost King. Cant say the same for the other daughter seriously.

Speaking of frost, have you heard of the Danish fairytale of Agneta and the Sea King? Kind of a reverse Little Mermaid with a deeper history but equally heartbreaking *sighs longingly* . Also, the accompanying John Bauer illustrations to the tale are drop dead g o r g e o u s

After viewing this video, I'm reminded of two other frosty stories: The first is a Russian tale about Jack Frost. It's sort of a Cinderella type story mixed with a flavoring of the Mother Haulda. The second is that of a Dungoens & Dragons Archfey named the Prince of Frost. Both are interesting tales, perfect for the season

She gets rewarded when he realizes she was saying what he wanted to hear. The world would certainly be better if people weren't so stubborn and selfish.

I thought the second daughter was killed not exactly because she said she was Cold, but because she was rude? Calling him a blind, old fool. ?

It's more that the first daughter was polite and accepting of her circumstances. King Frost was just doing his job by making things cold and she wouldn't trouble him with what were petty concerns to him. Seeing that she was resolute and polite, as the story says, he took pity on her. He knows what it is that he does, but there isn't malice in it... and she didn't deserve that fate so he rewarded her for such. The other daughter though, was unkind and unaccepting of her circumstances. She was also there out of greed to take from him, so he rewarded her in kind.

Has anyone seen the Mystery Science Theater 3000's riff of the movie Jack Frost? That movie had to have been based off of this fairytale. It's a fun, silly movie and they do a great job riffing it. I think that video and this make a perfect pairing to watch together.

I have no patience for parents who refuse to protect their children. Your partner wants to hurt your kid/s? The partner goes, not the child.

I also have no patience for people - or stories - that don't get the difference between passiveness, aggressiveness, and assertiveness. "No, no, sir, I'm fine, don't worry about me" and "you blind old fool" are not the only two options here... though I still wouldn't blame someone for how they word their responses when they are /actually actively dying/.

@A Bit Late... Thank >U< for the story-caressed by your lovely voice! This story made pop to mind C.S. Lewis's >Great Divorce< (btw, a great, entertaining story [±100pp] with many quotable lines, and thoughtful messages) that has one of my all-time favorite word-pictures. The character is explaining why one person canNOT go to hell... >because their heart's just too big and it wouldn't fit.< (I love that!) The character goes on to explain that a person who goes to hell has a heart that's so small, cold and shriveled up that it easily fits in there. (I think the story you read here reminded me of that description of the small, cold, shriveled up heart from C.S. Lewis's short book. It sounds to me that that difference in size of their hearts would also apply metaphorically to those two daughters.) 💫May angels nestle you in their wings when you sleep.🌃
