When it originally came out, critics at the time didn't like the movie, which explains the nomination. It's wasn't until years later that it was reevaluated and became an all-time classic.

I think that "Can't Stop the Music" got as much backlash as it did because it came out when disco was declared officially dead. There were movies like "Airplane" and "The Blues Brothers" that came out the same year which had prominent jokes about how dated disco had become

I think you’re forgetting also with Can’t Stop the Music is that there was a huge backlash against disco music which was based in homophobia and racism over saturation of the market.

Yeah, I fear homophobia played a part. What better target for homophobes than a loose biopic on the most famous gay group ever?
@seaofghosts
@seaofghosts 2 ай бұрын
That doesn't make any sense that homophobia was behind it since the Village People had great success with their music. Why would people buy their music but eschew the movie if they were anti-gay? Besides, there were many disco artists who were straight eg. Bee Gees, Diana Ross, KC and the Sunshine Band. However the popularity of disco music had waned overall by the time of the release of the movie. Plus, it just wasn't a good movie. A movie has several components. Poor writing, poor direction etc can all contribute to a poor result. Popularity btw doesn't always equal quality.
@vinnym5607
@vinnym5607 2 ай бұрын
The disco backlash wasn't based on homophobia alone. It's based on homophobia, racism and it's noteworthy and aside from the Bee Gees, it doesn't hurt that it's biggest star is a black woman (Donna Summer)
@jgg59
@jgg59 2 ай бұрын
@@vinnym5607 you’re right Vinny I don’t believe I left racism out of it. I’m 65. I was going to all the underground gay and black clubs, back in the late 70s and early 80s in New York City. Donna Summer was the diva my cousin Joey sang in the group Brooklyn dreams. He wrote bad girls and sang with her on heaven knows.
@seaofghosts
@seaofghosts 2 ай бұрын
@@vinnym5607 So now racism is behind the demise of disco. Why not throw sexism into the mix too? After all, Donna Summer was also a woman. Summer continued to have a successful career when the disco craze ended well into the 80s. How do you square that with your theory that people turned from disco due to racism? Why should they turn from one genre to another when the artist they allegedly dislike due to her colour had hits with both? Oh, and who else did well during the 80s? Michael Jackson? Wasn't he black?

As widely praised as it is today, The Shining was met with a lot of hostility upon its initial release, so these nominations should not be at all surprising. One of the film's biggest detractors was actually Stephen King, the novel's author, who was unsettled by the choices Kubrick made for the film, and apparently that's one of the reasons John J.B. Wilson stands by his nominating The Shining for Razzies. Apparently there were several critics who compared it unfavorably to the book (if you read some of the original reviews from people such as Janet Maslin, Pauline Kael, Roger Ebert, most of them were quite negative... Ebert called it "a crashing disappointment. The biggest surprise is that it contains virtually no thrills. Given Kubrick's world-class reputation, one's immediate reaction is that maybe he was after something other than thrills in the film. If so, it's hard to figure out what.")... The Shining's acclaim came later upon reappraisal, which is why these nominations seem silly now (it happens with all award shows, given that they are a time capsule of a specific year, and movies have a life beyond the year they were released in)...

I've never liked the existence of the Razzie's. I'm not a hatewatch guy, plus a lot of the time, the Razzie's are as biased as the Oscar's. Perfectly fine performances have been nominated and even some good songs, like Enya's "Book of Days" from Far and Away (the song wasn't even originally written for the film, so not an original song). Sometimes it just feels like they pick what movie or actor's trendy to hate on, and that's really lame and disingenuous. On the other hand, disasters like Xanadu are exactly the kind of films that this award should gravitate towards. Like, at least Can't Stop the Music is an actual musical, unlike Xanadu where the characters hardly ever sing the songs and it's just a boring slog for most of its runtime. It's not even so-bad-it's-good, it's just... underwhelming.

A bit of context for the era for those nominations: Can't Stop the Music was released when disco was dying and facing a huge backlash. The Shining was viewed as a major critical disappointment - with Kubrick and Jack Nicholson being singled out in particular. Friday the 13th received enormous blowback from critics of the slasher genre. Siskel and Ebert went so far as to call out Betsy Palmer for "lowering" herself to appear in such a movie. Palmer later explained she took the movie because she needed money to buy a car. Brooke Shields was also under scrutiny at the time due to her age and the manner in which she was being sexualized in Pretty Baby, Calvin Klein jeans ads, and Blue Lagoon. Looking back - a lot of the nominations were ridiculous. Except for the Jazz Singer. It truly, truly sucked.

The Shining was not that well liked by critics or audiences when it originally came out. Its reputation has grown over the years. I saw it when it came out with a group of friends and none of us liked it, some even finding it laughably bad at times. I still don't quite understand the rapturous love for it today, or the idea that it's even remotely scary, but audience tastes have obviously changed and when a director with a reputation like Kubrick directs it, the fanboys just don't want to hate.

Yes! I was there in 1980 when these movies were in theaters and it's true: neither "The Shining" nor "Dressed to Kill" were well-received, either by most critics or the general public. Now, "Windows" on the other hand, was an instant bomb. "Cruising" opened at #1 early in the year, but did a fast fade.

@@jons.105 Thanks for backing me up on that one. I've been fascinated to watch it go from not scary and not very good to, in many cases, the 'scariest movie ever made.!" To compare it to The Exorcist is quite ridiculous.

@@johnnolan5579 I remember walking out of the theater after seeing "The Shining" in a group, and we all looked at each other and said, "Eh..." Box-office was lukewarm and Pauline Kael gave it a withering review in The New Yorker. But time has a way of blurring the lines, doesn't it?

It’s similar to the nomination for Friday the 13th, another movie which was famously hated by critics (Siskel & Ebert especially), but is now considered a horror classic. I saw it for the first time last year and I thought it was pretty meh personally.

This (and the Razzies in general) is such a fascinating insight into the zeitgeist of the moment--most especially the elements of cultural opinion that get forgotten. We might not collectively realize that people didn't like The Shining when it came out if not for this first Razzies. And I suspect that there was a cultural hate on for Brook Shields as an actress at the time? No way to know. But cultural self-awareness of mass dislike of teenage girl stuff is very, very recent.

Thank you. In 1980, Amy Irving broke up with Steven Speilberg after being together for four years. 1. The movie was not a bomb, it made 18m on a 11m budget. 2. It got so-so reviews. 60% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Looking at these awards historically it is important to take into account the cultural vibe at the time. People could pile-on back then as they do now. People in the intelligentsia were sick of disco and Brooke Shields, and The Shining was derided for a long time.

The Shining is a great film but a terrible adaptation. Cruising was extremely controversial for portraying gays as dangerous freaks at a time when gays were fighting hard for mainstream acceptence. That might also explain DePalmas nom for Dressed to Kill. Awards are always influenced by the cultural zeitgeist.

Cruising being mixed in with those other movies is a travesty. The Nude Bomb wasn't great, but for someone who's favorite sitcom of all time is Get Smart, any return of Maxwell Smart was welcome.

I know it wasn’t known at the time, but I can see nominating Kubrick, if you count creating a hostile work environment as being a bad Director. Mind they also nominated Duvall, which sucks.

Friday the 13th wasn't nominated because of hatred for the horror genre. It's because it was sleazy exploitation masquerading as horror. Gory killings and jump scares for 90 minutes has nothing to do with real horror. How it has such a huge reception is mystifying.

Yeah, I saw Friday the 13th in a theatre last year and was incredibly meh on it. Despite having some good qualities (Besty Palmer, cute young Kevin Bacon, Tom Savini makeup effects, the ‘you’re-doomed’ guy) it just came off as a low-rent Halloween knock-off, and it would definitely be remembered as such if it hadn’t inspired such a huge franchise.
