I’m half Hakka from my mother’s side and born and raised in New York City. She is no longer alive but I witness her life of courage, hard-work ethic and hospitality. I regret not learning to speak Hakka since Mandarin is spoke at home and only heard her use Hakka with her mother/my grandmother. Only ate in 1 Hakka restaurant in Chinatown. I’m proud of my Hakka heritage and was raised in those ways. Great video as it helps me re-explore the Hakka culture and cuisine.

This video is so refreshing to hear! I speak hakka but I’ve noticed that every video I’ve watched of hakka, intonations were always different. Your pronunciation is as close for me to understand the way I speak it.

Nice to come across your video. I am Hakka from the same village as you; Guangdong, Dongguan, Feng Guang, Huang Dong, Liang Pai Wui. I’ve also heard Linglam/Lingnam. We are Hung/Wan & Cheng (Cantonese spelling). My mum also makes mee tang exactly the same as what you showed. Your Hakka wah is the same, but I can’t speak as smoothly or as well as you. I’m born and raised in London.

Like yourself, I am a "lai-ap" also, first generation Trinidadian hakka (hello neighbor!). Enjoying your vids and re-learning a lot! What piqued my interest in this particular video was the location of your parents villages. My parents are no longer with us but I can remember them mentioning their village as being "Liang Pai wei" and/or "Leung su ha" interchangeably. Following your direction, I was able to locate Huang Dong but nothing further. Did you locate "Liang Pai wei" on the map? If yes, would you be so kind as to provide further details of its location? Thank you for your hard work.

Michelle, thanks for sharing and encouraging others to continue with speaking Hakka, a dying language sadly if not promoted. I am originally from Sabah, Malaysia and my parents are from Northern Territory, HK. Originally this place was part of BaoAn, or Sin On (the old name of BaoAn). BaoAn was a big areas over 200 years ago but now part of Shenzhen. The Hakka dialect is more similar for people in Huizhou, HuiYang, Shenzhen. As you move north towards MeiZhou (MoiYen - old name), the accent differs and if you move even more north towards Fujian, its almost unintelligible - for me anyways. I spoke Hakka most of my childhood days in Sabah. I have live in China Shenzhen last 13 years a learnt a lot more about the language and the variations / regions. Thanks again for sharing, keep doing it.

Loving the hakka content! What is a "lai ap"?
@inmimisbowl
@inmimisbowl 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks yi :) Lai ap is a term Chinese people born in Suriname call themselves. Chinese immigrants (like the parents of the 'lai ap') would then be 'tjien ap' or pure duck. And if Chinese people get married with another ethnicity group, their children will be called 'fan ap', meaning foreign duck. I got this at this website: www.suriname.nu/302ges/archi144.html
