Do you think tanks played a significant role in WW1?
@Ugly_German_Truths
@Ugly_German_Truths Жыл бұрын
They made the breakthrough in Autumn 1918 possible after about 4 years of stalemate and if the war had not ended in that November would have played an even bigger role in the Spring Offensive the Allies planned so hard for. Sure, the fresh intake of almost unlimted troops coming from the US would ultimately have ground the resistance down, Germany especially had little to put into the field in form of more reserves, but that would have taken a lot longer than the breaches made possible by tanks. Seeing how the tactics ripened in just over one year of total use at the front an astonishing development.
@alganhar1

@@Ugly_German_Truths It was not only the tanks that made the breakthroughs possible during the Hundred Days Offensive. They helped, yes, but breakthroughs in both tactics and technology made over the course of the war were also very large contributors to the final victory. People forget some very important facts about those early tanks, all too often people compare them to WWII armour, or even modern armour. Such a comparison is wrong. WWI tanks had several flaws, flaws that would be overcome in the decades following, but still very real, and they CANNOT be ignored. First flaw is they were slow. Very slow. The Whippet, a 'fast' tank of the late war could manage 8 - 9 miles an hour on perfect terrain. The MK V's which were the principle British tanks could manage 5 - 6 mph on perfect terrain. In bad terrain they would obviously all be slower. Second flaw is even by 1918 they were mechanically unreliable. Extremely so. By day 4 of the Battle of Amiens for example there were 35 running tanks left, the vast majority of the 'casualties' had simply broken down. This is out of a total starting force of over 400. In other words by day 4 90% of the tanks utilised were out of action. A tank unit of 1918 would suffer in the region of 20% losses through breakdowns per day. That is before enemy action. This lack of speed and reliability meant that tanks were not a weapon that could be sustained for long. They could help create a breakthrough, but due to their limited speed and terrible reliability they were of limited use on a breakout, and had truly terrible operational sustainability.

That the tank wasnt a Wunderheilmittel for the Remis you see in the fact that the Germans werent that much interested as they found ways to deal with those. There’s actually another reason for only fitting a tank with machine guns. Basically, it was found that tanks weren’t all that great at actually killing people, but they were very good at keeping them pinned down under cover. So, by fitting more machine guns, the tanks became even better at pinning down a section of trench for the following infantry to get in and do the killing themselves. The tanks with large cannons were used to knock out heavier targets like bunkers and artillery positions, but they were never very accurate in any case.

It’s also heavily misleading and completely ignores the context of tank production. Also conveniently forgets whose tanks went through which capital at the end of the war. Fundamental distillation is he completely ignores the reason T34 had to be made so roughly was because it was what was available at the time, could be produced quickly, and was good enough to stop the enemy. It had sufficient armor and argument to get the job done, and the engineer is based off of reports fashion the rest of tank just well enough to meet average requirements on the front without wasting time or resources. The Soviets had to get these things out the door quickly in large numbers or else the Germans were going to slaughter them all down to the last baby. Insisting on ultimate product improvement and polishing to a mirror sheen would have let your failure to produce enough working vehicles and would have resulted in the fall of the Soviet Union. Given his love of Nazis in the 21st-century as well it’s no wonder he comes up with such horribly biased bullshit.

While the tanks of WW1 were obviously very primitive, I think people make too much of them being slow. The rhombus shaped tanks from the british were made to support the troops, and since they were vulnerable to infantry it was a good idea to not have them be able to run off from their infantry protectors. It was reasonably effective enough to continue into WW2, with the british having two types of tank, the cruiser; something more akin to a scout vehicle but able to defend itself effectively, and the infantry tank; a big, heavy and slow thing that was there to stick with the infantry and destroy bunkers and such.
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 Жыл бұрын
Not at all. The Mk V could manage *maybe* 5 miles an hour. Maybe. That is not just slow, that is slower than infantry slow. Even the Whippet 'fast' tank could barely make 8 miles an hour. 8. Even worse though was mechanical unreliability, and this is what stops the tank being a war winning weapon in 1918. Was it important? Sure, but it was important as a local force multiplier. You see the problem with tanks of 1918 is they had a breakdown rate of around about 20% of the tank force. Per day. Read that again. You are going to lose 20% of your tanks, through breakdown, every day. This issue is highlighted by the Battle of Amiens. Over 400 tanks started that battle on day one, by day four there were 35 operational tanks left. The vast majority of the losses had been through breakdown rather than enemy action. Sure, a lot of those vehicles would be recovered, repaired and back in action in the weeks following the battle, but it highlights the primary weakness of WWI tanks, their terrible mechanical reliability. It meant you could not expect to sustain a tank unit in action for more than five days, and probably less if you factor in losses due to enemy action.
@alexturnbackthearmy1907
@alexturnbackthearmy1907 Жыл бұрын
It was not "reasonably effective". It was a complete disaster. Tank so slow, that installing AT weapon (flak-38) capable of knocking them out while they were coming in range was a common tactic and extremely fast and unreliable ones that could be knocked out by 20mm cannon. Amazing combo, that was replaced by actual heavy and medium tanks later on.
@sumvs5992
@sumvs5992 Жыл бұрын
@@alexturnbackthearmy1907 tanks today are vulnerable javelins, anti tank mines, air power and artillery. Are they useless today? No, because of this concept called "combined arms warfare", where the infantry, air force, tankers, artillery, intelligence services and such are in constant communication with each other to tell each what's happening, where they should each go to complement each other best and how to ultimately achieve victory together. Now in WW1 this wasn't exactly a name concept, but the British (at least towards the end of the war) developed the "creeping barrage" method for artillery, where, at a set time, the artillery would fire just in front of their own forces to conceal them from the enemy, with the artillery slowly moving their shots toward enemy lines. They would, as stated previously, keep the infantry near the tanks where the infantry would protect the tanks from any germans with a bold plan, and the tanks would protect the infantry by targeting pillboxes that would pin the infantry down. And while, yes, the rhombus tanks were lightly armoured, British command were aware that artillery is not 100% precise. Most shells would simply bracket the tanks, and not take them out. But once the Germans developed the K bullet and later planned to produce the Tank-Gewehr and Tank-Maschinengewehr, they armoured the tanks up and progressively got better with them. But please, tell me how you expect military staff who have little experience with WW1 level modern warfare except for the Russo-Japanese war and Boxer Rebellion (in which the boxers were mostly armed with anything but firearms of any kind and neither the Russians nor the Japanese had any form of tanks). I'm also sure you have a great opinion on how muskets were the least advanced form of weaponry in the late 1600s to the mid 1800s.

And 1) the QF 1lb 37mm "Pom-Pom" was around, and autocannon and bigger caliber than 20mm and had been around since the 1890s. 2) the L/M/H design thought wasn't classical. Honestly you would be amazed at even the smallest changes could be especially when you’ve been working outside in the pouring rain where you get inside and you’re welcomed to say a nice warm cup of tea or coffee and just enjoying the moment before having to go outside and for the troops, where yes the fighting was brutal and horrific but for the most parts all they did 60% of the time was just doing nothing and trying to get as much sleep as possible the rest of the time they were awake was mostly just chores, things like say repairing the duckboards to prevent getting wet feet or sinking into the mud, disposing of the dead or dying either by giving them their peace or sending them off to a medical center, other jobs usually included things like expanding the the trench lines or adding more machine gun or mortar posts, but the majority of the work was simply repairing any damages or removing any of the excess water or collapsed mud due to a failure in the walls. Other than that soldiers had a lot of downtime to well keep themselves amused since things like iPhones or mobile gaming hadn’t been invented yet so soldiers had to be creative, things like say hunt the rats where you and your friend kill as many rats as you can, cards, gambling, chess, singing or music, shouting a few insults at the enemy. Drinking if at all possible, just anything to keep themselves entertained for about a month before being rotated out in which the average soldier would get to enjoy all the merriments that France had to offer (mostly women) as well as good food and alcohol

Was the battle of cambrai really the first combined arms battle? Around 1800s infantry formed square to protect against cavalry, then artillery could decimate them. Isn't that, what's the phrase I'm looking for? Yes! Combined arms.

Ahhh just fyi, "tankie" doesn't refer to people who are really into tanks. idk what you would call those. What it *does* refer to is people who blindly stan for the USSR and communist countries in general (or their descendant countries, sometimes). Kind of like "wehraboo" for people who are way too into Nazi Germany and its "technological superiority" yada yada.
@terryhiggins5077

Wouldn't that be a commieboo though? I thought tankie was more of a "use tanks to break protests" and less USSR fanboy.
@cerberus0225

@@terryhiggins5077 You would think but I'm pretty sure "tankie" predates the term "weeaboo" and its derivatives. After all, the USSR and China were pretty known for their 'send in the tanks' approach to....everything

13:10 no sh1t xD but Lazerpig can give kids who just ended Middle School some interest and love for history that definitely the marvelous school system from anywhere in the world had incredibely failed, I consider him a great "historian introductor" for those who can't be listening monotone class lessons that bring a lot more detailed info about history, but you need to like history a lot more to not end up doing yourself a colonoscopy with an ignited tnt cartridge of pure boredom, greetings :D

Plus trying to communicate with the crew inside is close to impossible to do so trying to warn them about say an enemy ambush or anti tank weapons is basically nonexistent and so it was a case of drop as many artillery rounds down range, tanks provide armor and fire support whilst the infantry cleared out any entrenched enemies or any buildings, other than that it was a simple case of driving forwards, it was the Germans who made the full use of infantry, armored and air assets due to more advanced weapons as well as communications technology allowing either troops on the ground to communicate to the air force or other armored units for fire support rather than screaming at the top of your lungs or using flag signals

So explain to me why every British military vehicle had a radio in 1939. Explain to me why the BEF, while small, was the ONLY fully mechanised/motorised Army IN THE WORLD in 1939. Sure, the Germans got some things right, especially early in WWII, but they also got some very critical things wrong. Operationally and Tactically they were very good, at least for much of the war, Strategically however they were inept at best. Their logistics were also plagued with problems that they never fully addressed. If your logistics breaks down then it does not matter how good your combat units are, because they cannot fight, or are fighting at reduced effectiveness. And the Germans never managed to sort out their awful logistics setup. They improved it to some extent, but they were never able to purge the intrinsic weaknesses of their system.

To be fair to Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig, he gets a bad reputation but it is not wholly justified. I highly recommend checking out the Imperial War Museum's KZbin channel as they did an excellent video on the notion of "Lions Led by Donkeys" and how, actually, when Haig was alive he was thought of extremely highly by most people in Britain. Much of the poor reputation he became known for was developed many years later and many historians these days (at least according to the IWM who, to be fair, are a pretty well qualified source) have re-evaluated that assessment.
