Probably the wine one Imagine just some British diplomats walking across no man's land to tell the german soldiers that if they could drink an outrageous amount of alcohol, the germans retreat.

Allegedly they did have a small degree of success with the sacks and hammers strategy. Proving once again, anything can be melee combat if you try hard enough.

3:05 it gets even wackier When the SMS Cap Trafalgar, disguised as the RMS Carmania, engaged the real RMS Carmania, the real RMS Carmania was disguised as the SMS Cap Trafalgar. The Brits had the same idea as the Germans, and the fact that they happened to disguise their ship as the German ship that happened to be disguised as their ship that they were dosguising as the German ship, and then the two happened to come across each other, is one of the funniest coincidences in history in my opinion.

Thanks Mr. Terry. I wish I had you as my History Teacher. Maybe wouldn’t have dropped out of College if I had someone who cares as much as you.

Ocean liners were also extremely fast ships, able to outrun most any ship that might try to intercept them. It's also interesting to note, though this might be fictitious as I've done little research into the topic myself, that while the Cap Trafalgar did run into the ocean liner-turned-convoy raider it was disguised as, said ocean liner was supposedly also disguised as the Cap Trafalgar, meaning both crews would suddenly find themselves face to face with their own ships.
@marquisdelafayette1929
@marquisdelafayette1929 Жыл бұрын
Im guessing it is because they didn’t have the heavy weaponry and reinforced hull etc and that’s why they were “faster “. Like it definitely would not be something that could take multiple hits and still a) make it back to port and b) be able to be repaired rather quickly. Like the US aircraft carriers in the Pacific in WW2 would get hammered and still be able to keep limping into port. It’s nuts. Like the Yorktown.

The more interesting parts of WW1 were definitely on the periphery, and there's a specific battle that took place in German East Africa that is covered in that other Bluejay video. Highly recommended.

The author Nathaniel West wrote a play titled "Fox Hunting" set during WW1 when the war had devolved into a ghastly stalemate and each side was looking for ways to break free of it. An outpost near the front lines was always getting their dispatches stolen by the enemy so they would write absurd battle plans knowing they would be stolen. Then a new naive officer is assigned to the outpost and interrupts their little game and the enemy doesn't steal the absurd dispatches and they get sent to the front. The soldiers follow the crazy made-up orders and they start being victorious and gaining ground. The enemy adopts these absurd tactics and they start winning.

On your final thoughts, yep, exactly: arms race. Even good old fashioned evolution does this. As an entomologist/arachnologist, one of the "craziest" findings of that in nature for me is the evolution of reproduction in spiders. IT basically comes from two different interests (VERY simplified): the female has a certain power to choose which sperm (from which sexual parter=futute daddy) she will use to fertilize her eggs. The males wants to make sure HE will be the chosen one and thus tries to foil her power of choice. It's way to much and to digressing to cover all of that here, but for anyone interested, I encourage you to do your research. It's a real exchange of blows of adaptions on both sides.

5:00 also the fact that they already supplied the UK and France through those sunk merchant ships with weapons from the beginning and thus were already a belligerent state.... but let's quickly forget that and only focus on actual declarations of war because otherwise we would draw comparisons with the modern day and the arms supply to Ukraine....
