Yes, I've never heard this before. Flex forearm but soft grip? It sounds hard. I don't have a practice partner, so I have to use the wall and can't hit too hard or the ball would come back too fast. This practice improves my reflex but my volley technique become erroneous (hit under the ball, no power, no "catch and carry", just pretty much a "push" on the ball, etc...). I need to practice this. For those who are still in doubt, check out his other videos and you'll see they all fit together. Thanks.

Very nice video. Would like to have clarity on what you do to flex if you are holding the racket loosely. I was taught in squash to hold by the palm and 4th and 5th fingers gripping firmly and the rest loosely. What about your recommended volley ?

I've heard it before but presented in another way, Bob Hansen from Nike tennis camps and national champ coach at UCSC use to say, give the racket handle a squeeze just as you are about to volley. this would be your "flex" . and point your strings at the target....

Others have mentioned this, but it’s worth repeating: by “flex” you mean “tense” the muscles. Flexion technically refers to bending as opposed to extension. But great video, as always.

Hi,The word flex in anatomy means bending a joint.But I guess you use the word flex to mean contracting the forearm muscles white hitting a volley.Am I right? Bakthan
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
Dorothy S yes, you got it!
@bzockster2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. As a person trained in anatomy I was confused by how Jeremy used the term “flex”.
@bzockster2 жыл бұрын
Also, if you watch the clip carefully, he seems to extend his wrist more during the “flexed” movement. During his swing the arm does not seem to be flexed in a major way at the elbow. Perhaps the movement he is proposing is a combination of wrist extension and abduction, which has been shown to occur in advanced players during the volley. See this article for details: Chow JW, Carlton LG, Lim YT, Shim JH, Chae WS, Kuenster AF. Muscle activation during the tennis volley. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 1999 Jun;31(6):846-54.

Hi Jeremy. Thanks for the great video. Don't quite agree with one part at 6.52 minutes. The right foot went backward instead of the left foot stepping forward.
@FundamentalTennis4 жыл бұрын
The right foot went backwards in order to create lateral space. This is commonly done by the pros on the forehand volley when the ball comes a bit at them.
@jamessmith27955 жыл бұрын
Do you use a pure continental grip for both backhand and forehand volleys or do you shade more toward eastern backhand for the backhand volleys and more toward eastern forehand for the forehand ones? I always feel shaky at contact unless I change grips at least a little between forehand and backhand.
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
James Smith here is a video I did on exactly that subject: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6q0aYt_atOIY5I

Hi Jeremy, I am clear on the notion of what you are saying, but I don't think it is common for your average bear to separately flex the forearm without also tightening the hand. The first thing almost anyone (who is not a bodybuilder)does when you say show your guns is ball up the fist. So perhaps you can drill down just a bit on how to do the one thing without doing the other! Thanks for your videos!

Great video... I'll give you a little tip from the 70's volley era... don't take the volley back beyond the plane of your body. Your's is coming back a little too far... instead, you should rotate your shoulders a little more, stop the racquet at the body midplane, then punch with your arm and shoulder rotation through the ball. Main thing is to not pull the racquet back with your arm, but let the rotation of your shoulders bring it back to the midplane of your body.
@thomassansonetti3995 жыл бұрын
Your idea of a "weak Continental" with the use of a 2.5 grip works wonders on the forehand volley. The wrist behind the handle really firms up the shot at the point of contact. Please make a video on the backhand volley. I am having problem on the BH volley with the 2.5 grip because the face of the racquet is opening up too much and a floaty slice results. The palm is not behind the handle any longer. Do you really have to rotate your wrist forwards to obtain a flush racquet face? Or do you just keep an open racquet face and just knife down into the ball with a karate chop motion?
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
Thomas Sansonetti hi Thomas. I would suggest to move the heel pad of your hand towards true continental as stated in the video. U could also put the knuckle on bevel 2

I told him the same thing on his first video I saw. He doesn't seem to listen to his audience. He will lose many before he gets what he wants. It's just too bad if he doesn't learn how to teach on video because he is really on track. Today's attention span of the viewer is even shorter than when I was producing TV news, docs and special events. He should also research the words that he use, Flexing is misleading.....contracting the muscles is what he really means. Jeremy, I'll say it again, I'm also a USPTR Pro rated in '79 so you'd be better off if you read the comments and consider your appreciative audience so you'll go a long way with your quest to impart your discoveries.

@pontusschroder83615 жыл бұрын
Jes Salvo I think many people, including me likes when he explain the same thing in different ways, so that you really grasp the comcepts. That makes the videos a little longer. Would you say the same to a coach you hire on the tennis court? that you want the lesson to be short?
