Well, this is probably the last bit of wonky CGI/special effects in the show, as far as I remember. Chase considered killing Livia in the season 1 finale, but Nancy Marchand asked him to let her stay, and he was okay with it. She was already sick by then, but obviously got worse during season 2. I'm pretty sure the scenes where she's with the oxygen tank it was because she actually needed it, since they never made it a plot point or explained it in any way, and I think you guys caught a moment where she had to record dialogue afterwards during episode 2x12, which may have been caused by her illness. Apparently, she was one of the few actresses during casting that understood the character, since a lot of women played a broader, more loving italian stereotype. Livia is based on Chase's mother, and apparently even family members were surprised how much she was channeling Chase's mother even though she never met her, obviously. She caught on that Livia had to be based on someone, and when talking to Chase's wife, asked her: "I trust that this creature I’m playing is deceased?" She was great, and it's also very funny to contrast her role here with the one she has in The Naked Gun, where she basically plays the "straight (wo)man" of a comedy duo in her scenes with Leslie Nielsen. Anyway, can't watch the reaction until later, just wanted to write this since she did a great job portraying Livia.

The original plan for Livia this season was that she would be called to testify against Tony for the stolen airline tickets but she died June 18th 2000. They used cgi and existing footage for her last appearance here.

Hard to say what would be better. Sure, her testifying could cause a lot of drama, and plots, but I like when someone dies at the show suddenly (not that in her advanced age it was a suprise, character, and person both). Not IRL of course.

The movie that Tony is watching at the end is an old school gangster movie, The Public Enemy, from 1931. I think he is crying because that final scene shows a loving mother who cares for her gangster son, something Tony never had.
@carlomanesc08
@carlomanesc08 5 ай бұрын
It's interesting to see that Tony never cried throughout her mother's funeral and wake. It's only until the final scene of the movie, with the hopeful and nurturing mother. Tony cries for the kind of mother that Livia never was and, now with her death, never will be.

Yeah, David Chase's original plan for the show was that Livia would be alive throughout it and be a constant source of tension and angst for Tony. Pretty wild, it would have been a pretty different show had she lived for all 6 seasons.

This episode confirms that the supernatural exists in the Sopranos. It's really I think an unsung reason of why people love the show so much. Accompanied with the surreal, semi creepy and very accurate dream sequences is this underlying supernatural element to the show. Without spoiling anything it's never fully in your face but something that is always "there" sort of like our world whether you believe in ghosts or not. Sometimes you're just vibing and some unexplainable shit occurs that leaves you questioning things. The show does such a great job with the supernatural element as well as dreams since this is a high stakes job of potentially losing your life or having to deal with ending someone else's.

I will say, I watched when show originally aired and the time between seasons made it that I did not consider the lines being old dialogue. On rewatches I realized it. The cgi, yes at the time her head looked funny, then when she dies in the episode I figured they cut up old footage. So it did stand out as “off” at the time. Also love that this show makes you say, “that was pussy, that was pussy, that was pussy,” “it was pussy, it was pussy” 😂

The character of Livia actually lived in the real world as the mother of the shows creator... David Chase. All those depressing lines from Livia where the lines Chase’s mother uttered to him as a child. He explains in great detail how everything about Livia was actually his mother in real life. My guess is David Chase took the same path as Janice & Barbara did & got the hell away from home the day he turned 18! And another thing Chase revealed on being raised by a permanently depressed woman is he spent years in therapy learning how to cope with it. Explains why there’s such a strong psychological thread in the show.

Actually, her death was predictable. When Nancy Marchand was cast, she told David Chase she was very ill. And she was very sick during Season 2, so she was only able to film few scenes. This is according to the book "The Sopranos Sessions," which I recommend you read after you're done with the series. It features extensive interviews with David Chase. He also discusses his regret over how bad the CGI looked. But he wouldn't pull a "George Lucas" and re-do it with today's technology.

Funny. Watching this episode back when it was the first time, nobody I knew recognized this Livia cg until years later watching the cds for a dozen times. I think we were all so involved in the dialogue between her and Tony. We didn’t even notice it, especially when her hair is completely different in every shot when they go back to her sitting in the chair. Livia is probably my fav character of the entire series. Also my fav episodes are when they are all together, like this one for Livia’s Memorial. When Meadow gives Tony a look at the funeral is bc he’s talking friendly to an associate who is black and thinking he’s a hypocrite bc of how he was with her and Noah. Note: Besides Pussy being there in spirit, AJ heard a noise from his room, in the empty house and says, “Nana?” Out of left field, but he felt her presents at that moment. A kinda creepy moment there. A satisfying moment there when Hugh tells off his wife, and puts her in her place. About time! Janice is a lot like Tony, conniving, with a deadly bad side, but she’s a narcissist and lazy. Great reactions!

You mentioned Tony passing out after seeing the Uncle Ben's box but you didnt get into why. This is one of my favorite smaller moments on the show because it says so much without overtly saying it. Tony is racist, we know this - but he's also cool with some black people. When he meets the old black man a few eps back he's nice, respectful, and engages him in conversation and you can tell thrre's even a level of respect there. He likes him. So then when Tony sees Noah being all friendly with his daughter he gets upset and his inner prejudices come out - and he feels justified in his anger. But after, when he opens the cupboard and sees Uncle Ben - an older, kindly-looking black man, he's instantly hit with cognitive dissonance, bc he LIKED the older black man that he met earlier - and how here he is being racist. His mind cant handle it, and he passes out.
@hurley31
@hurley31 5 ай бұрын
He collapsed because seeing another black person at that precise moment in such a random place tipped him over the edge. His racism got the best of him. It's a scene that's darkly comic and they got that hence why they laughed. It's not deep beyond that you're giving Tony way too much credit.
@merkitten953
@merkitten953 5 ай бұрын
@@hurley31 youre disproving your own theory. If he didnt care, why would seeing another black person push him over the edge into a panick attack? If it were purely a hatred for black people thing wouldnt it make more sense for him to grab the Uncle Bens box and throw it yelling "fucking buttahhead!"? There was no anger there or sense of being tipped over the edge, instead its like he cant handle what he's seeing - because he CANT. When he sees Uncle Ben he's thinking of the old black guy, and its messing with his head. Dont mistake this as me excusing Tonys racism or saying deep down he's a good guy. He IS a racist, and while there may be good parts of him and he is capable of love and caring, simply beimg capable of such, or doing it once in a while, isnt enough to say someone's a good person... and all the bad Tony's done most definitely outweighs any good he's done. I'm not saying him getting upset means he's not racist. Im just saying that theres more to it than "he saw another black guy" - meaning he saw a black person he'd actually liked and maybe even had some respect for. To see that right after being a total racist jerk to Noah, therefore being made to kind of confront his own racism, was too much for him, & he collapsed.
@hurley31
@hurley31 5 ай бұрын
@@merkitten953 your take is absolutely wild and shared by pretty much no-one. This scene is not deep, it's humour. Trying to justify it with 'why didn't he grab the rice and start growling at it' I mean really? He's passing out already and since when does everyone overtly display their anger at everything? It's not a cartoon. That's a huge reach to try and build an alternative reading on. He's worked up from the altercation, the meats he's pulled from the fridge which have been known to trigger him then bang - a grinning black man hiding in his closet 😂. He's not safe anywhere, then collapses.

I always took the Pussy scene as this, this universe has already implied ghosts exist (Paulie and the psychic). To me that was Pussy being there for Tony during a tough time of his. Pussy still loves tony even after death and is there with him. After we see pussy and tony closes the cabinet we even see Tony for a brief moment pause, take a second almost as if he felt something there. I think that was implied to be Pussy’s actual ghost watching tony.

Just to comment on Tony's racism cause usually everyone feels/reacts the same. *In a business where you hurt/kill people for money and power* *People are shocked when said person is also a racist/sexist/homophobe/misogynist/etc* Idk call me old fashioned but I liked when these anti hero types were truly morally ambiguous. Seems like writing nowadays is too afraid to have a main character be this much of a scum bag. When it comes to the criminal underworld especially, I don't want my characters written to be completely black and white (pun intended). True testament to the amazing writing staff cause as vile as they kept pushing the envelope with Tony, the more people seemed to connect with him lol Lol it is just a funny thought

Characters like Tony, Livia, and other anti-heroes are written with many layers, as you said. They reveal human imperfections because no one is perfect. Nowadays, simple character development in TV might be due to people struggling to separate fiction from reality. But shows like The Sopranos open up conversations about uncomfortable topics that, I believe, are necessary to have.
