A further recording of BR Pacer 142 084 with original Leyland TL11 engines

BR Pacer 142 084 with original Leyland TL11 engines and transmission by Self-Changing Gears. This is a sound recording made in 1988 , accompanied by explanatory, on-screen notes. It supplements a recording released in Feb. 2022, using an on-board recording made between Rotherham and Doncaster and ends with a platform recording of 142 084 leaving Doncaster.

Thanks for uploading another video. I’m partial to the sound of the Leyland 510 and the 0.680 engines but the TL11’s sound sweet coupled to a SCG gearbox. When the class 43 lost its valenta power plant I felt like it lost some of its character which is how I feel about the pacers loosing the TL11’s to the LTA10-R. Still it gave the pacers a much longer service life.

Love all of your videos, very underrated. Have you heard about the new Train Sim World product, "Preston to Blackpool"? It's set in the 80s and features the pacer with its original engine and transmission. Releasing on the 14th

I've just taken a look. The video looks really good but the engine noise is not quite like the real TL11 sound. Hopefully they'll get that right at some point as it's a great noise!

I have a TL11 in a restored Leyland Tiger bus, 4 speed semi auto, in Oz, this sounds so weird to me but still beautiful! Thanks for the upload and commentary. Awesome stuff 👍

Thanks Dave! I bet your bus sounds good too. We have a couple of similar units on the preserved Aln Valley Railway where I volunteer. All five carriages originally featured TL11 engines with SCG automatic gearboxes but these were replaced in the early 1990s with Cummins LTA10 engines and Voith hydraulic transmissions. Much more reliable but nowhere near as good in the “sound” department!

Thanks, yes the sound of a TL11 engine has a great distinctive sound and your recordings of them being used in a rail car takes it to the next level! Epic stuff. Thanks for the info, great stuff. Are any units preserved over there with a TL11 in them, probably not I’m guessing by your post.

@@destodave3076there were two 141 units preserved on the Weardale Railway in Northumbria but I’m not sure if either is still in existence. The Class 141 fleet were withdrawn by BR in 1995 and never received replacement engines or gearboxes.

God, could you imagine what pacers would've sounded like with 510s in them instead of TL11s? Being born in 2005, I only know pacers with the Cummins/Voith powertrain and they always sounded boring. Great video and a great look into the past of these much maligned trains.
