To put things into perspective: when PC Music was releasing these fresh and clean sounds, the main hit in radio was Uptown Funk and See You Again. The world of memes and underground was just discovering vaporwave. I can't wrap my mind around this. How futuristic this was! It sounds like the newest so-called zoomer music!

@@prostilez1489 3 years late but idk, i think there's substance. the thing is that it's substantial in a hella post-ironic way. that is to say that it mimicks a style and genre that is consistently lampooned critically for lacking substance (pop and 'dance' music) but it amplifies the aspects of it that people like (such as the sunny vocals, which get pitched and sped up to sound absurdly sweet, and the high bpm) to such a degree that it creates substance by effectively critiquing the lack of substance argument. the overarching message has always been "this is what we enjoy about this style of music, and anyone who claims it lacks substance can go fuck themselves" it's basically a middle finger to people who claim the soullessness of pop and dance music boils down to [insert random baseless shit that art critic X doesn't like about it] by cranking those aspects up. as a result you really get to see who enjoys those aspects the most tl;dr the substance shines through a bizarre post-ironic aesthetic that sweetens up the cheesy aspects of pop and dance to create a genre full of "guilty pleasures". that's the point of it, and that's what people like about it
@tastyhaze20583 жыл бұрын
@@deensama7718 So well said! Hyperpop can be very hard to pin down; I'm so impressed! I think the only thing I would add is in reference to some of the more dissonant tracks, at times completely lacking a melody line: Hyperpop is fun. Hyperpop takes a genre that has become about making calculated decisions to appeal to the widest audience and make the most money and decommodifies it, in a sense. Hyperpop is speaking pop's language, but it speaks in a tone that is much more becoming of genuine self-expression and , dare I say it, joy. Hyperpop is what dancing like no one's watching sounds like.
