i felt like kate was insensitive asf. if you don’t accept her advances she hates you even after everything you’ve done to keep her and the kids alive. and then when she wants to start a family after you just lost your brother, niece and nephew !! like she made it clear she would rather save a town that was okay with them dying over going after her step son who just kidnapped by his deranged father. i hated kate so much man😕

Yeah. The game forces you onto her side to the point where even if you thank David for brutally disarming the woman pointing the gun at Javi in the final episode, Javi will still be standing against David on Kate's side a few seconds later.

A New Frontier was such a mess because Telltale corporates at the time forced the writers to rewrite the entire story and game they’d almost completed- the screenshot in your thumbnail, for example, is part of the old plot. Clementine originally was going to be a playable character alongside Javier, and they’d meet while escaping from a savage city of slavers who imprisoned both of them in a zombie filled farm (the Slaughterhouse) after taking their family. Data mining has even revealed animations for Clem getting the absolute shit kicked out of her by Mason (the original villain), presumably this is the scene where he would have stolen AJ. Telltale staff said they ultimately rewrote the story because it was too dark and “didn’t feel in line with The Walking Dead” If you ask me, we got robbed of potentially one of the most riveting seasons of the game yet. So sad about it even too this day.
@prickly_procyonids
@prickly_procyonids Жыл бұрын
Forgot to add, but this original and darker plot is also the one we see in the very first promotional trailer for the game, the one where Javi approaches Clem and says “That one was marked too… we must be getting close. just hold on.” Sounded so damn cool. SUCH a shame we’ll never see the original story the writers had worked so hard on.

Yet another example of how abusive Telltale was to their staff. Honestly whenever money gets involved it goes to shit because greedy businessman would rather interfere as much as they please then let an artist tell the story they want to tell. Like sure criticism and rewrites aren't bad at all but we all damn well know that it sure we'll isn't the reason corporate douchebags interfere with storytelling

I never played A New Frontier, but I did see it on KZbin when it came out. Mariana's death always felt like it was done for shock factor, what with the abruptness and brutality of it, and that immediately soured the game for me
@MertKayKay
@MertKayKay Жыл бұрын
Yeah they rely on the trope of "Person gets shot from offscreen out of nowhere" a LOT in both this game series and the TV show. It's definitely shocking once, but it happens at least once per game and it's very cheap.

@@f87582Also if you don't know, the reason why it felt so off and why Kate ran out in the open to her and got shot for it is because of a cut scene (Accidental pun) Basically, Mariana was meant to be shot in the neck, not head. I don't know why it was cut but my guess is that the developers thought it was too gruesome, or didn't want to animate it.

As someone who was a big follower of Telltale at the time, I really got to see how much of a trainwreck ANF was. Through datamining we saw that Eleanor was supposed to be Joan's daughter, which explained why she betrayed the group and sold out our information and without giving us a reason why got mad at US for being literally forced into killing someone. Episode 5 was supposed to have a narrative conclusion for Joan and Clyde with Javi as the new leader of the New Frontier deciding on what to do with them and what to do with all the stuff they stole and looted. As you can see, this was cut, with actually 0 footage of the main villains in Episode 5. Episode 5 was also an absolute trainwreck on release with lots of bugs. Episode 1 and 2 also got so much hate because the writer promised that they will take a lot of effort into following throughout the endings of Season 2 and that Clementine would be a co-protagonist of the story only to see some lousy flashback that killed off Kenny in a super lame way and killed off Jane in a way that's super confusing. There were a lot of things looking at cut content and developer insights that we saw as Episodes came out that really did construct this reputation of the season being an absolute mess that don't really reflect when you play it nowadays. Just wanted to provide some context here. Season 4 is by far my favourite and I think has writing that is way stronger than the first season (but also having lows that are lower than the lows of the first Season) so I wonder if you'll share that sentiment. It's still a really interesting story unlike this snorefest so excited for your thoughts on that never the less.

I felt season 3 was the developers attempting to diverse the series so they can explore other characters within the world but it fell through hard. Javier simply couldn't rival Lee. Like with season 2 they rushed through everything and barely had enough time to flesh everyone out, darting between Javier and Clementine's goals. It felt like 2 stories running in parrel and sometimes colliding. By the end I didn't really care for Gabe, David, or Kate. Especially since the next season basically makes all your decisions pointless, like every season.

I haven't played the series, so I genuinely don't know if this is true, but just from Mert's description, David sounds like a good representation of an institutionalised solider. So, to preface, there is NO excuse for dv and being an absolute violent arsehole. Straight up. I'm not excusing David, just explaining. The thing about soldiers, especially from Gen X and before, is that they were broken down mentally and emotionally, not just physically, and built back up to be the perfect soldier. One of the outcomes of this is that while a soldier is severely loyal, you can't be too attached to anyone. This works in a combat situation, because loyalty to your brothers means you have a higher chance of survival, but you also have to accept that anyone could die at any time, and you need to be able to keep going, otherwise everyone is going to die. Another thing was that punishment from your brothers if you didn't fall in line was 'quietly' encouraged so that everyone worked together with the same mindset. Again, works in a combat situation so that anyone can take the leader role if necessary to continue the survival of everyone else, with minimal likelihood of insubordination. Thing is, none of this works outside of the military and combat. In civilian life, people don't fall in line, they're individuals, there's no one leader who makes the call and everyone else follows. A soldier then lashes out in the way they know how, which is wrong in civilian life, and everything comes crashing down. This is why David is loyal and will do the right thing as a cog in a machine, but does so poorly in one on one relationships. And again, not excusing the behaviour. Don't beat your partner, kids. But for a game series that seemed to have so many issues, this portrayal could have been much, much worse by the sounds of it.

I staunchly believe that people would've liked S3 more if it had come out after S4. People loved Clem (myself included) and wanted to see the end of her story, especially since S2 ended on such a massive cliffhanger so to start the next season on a random group was a bad idea. And then to make Clem a side character with a really interesting story just made people want to play that story as her instead. I think if you switched the story releases and then had Javier's story be a flashback to not only introduce the new main character of the series and show what happened to Clem in between the end of S2 and the new S3 would've went over waaaay better!

9:00 too many games try to force you into a relationship. Especially with women who are, no offense, not the best people. The annoyance I felt everytime this woman threw herself at me is immeasurable. The same thing happens in Detroit become human and in life is strange. They basically throw a character at you that (if you’re playing the game the way they want you to play it) would be mad at you for every choice you make, and yet I’m supposed to date her/like her? No. I don’t. And it’s sucks that my gameplay is affected by that. I think the only time it sort of works is for the wolf among us. Snow is push and pull enough with you that if you like her, she’s just avoidant because she’s busy, but if you don’t like her, she only takes it personally because she cares for you, not necessarily because she loves you.

This could be a placebo effect on my end, but I feel like Telltale tries to pressure you into making the less narratively-convenient choice the first time around (where the rubber banding is more noticeable), in the hopes that the second playthrough will have different/stronger outcomes and better hide the strings for the player. Like even in Season 1, I felt situations like these; -the game uses Clementine as an emotional atom bomb to nudge you away from robbing the station wagon, only for the story to eventually snap back into place and reveal that the guy (who you didn't steal from) has been hunting you in particular and is basically responsible for your death. -the game makes Ben commit to the most ridiculous acts of retardation throughout episode 4, and if you inevitably drop him, you lose the perks of his and Kenny's character development in Ep. 5, and get gifted Kenny's sloppy alternative "death" scene -Lee's group (or depending on who goes with you) have this hivemind effect where they parrot the same things to convince you to chop your arm off(which most people do) only to have him do the most ridiculously unbelievable and weirdly executed things and then die in the exact same place as he would with both arms I could keep going, but I remember that Season 3 has some of the same issues, where the people who don't like Kate or fight to not romance her get rubber-banded into that fight at the end for practically no reason, or the 90 percent of people who shot Conrad on the spot missed out on some of the only good character development in the season. Come to think of it, this was something I felt with Season 4 too. They spend most of the season showing that he's been battle hardened by being born into the apocalypse, and they give you this push into trying to civilize him or pull him away from this sole survivalist mentality. Then they implement extremely one sided choices, where having him do the immoral thing saves everyone's asses, and having him do the good thing basically punishes you or gets people you care about killed/maimed.

A New Frontier hit WAY TOO CLOSE to home for me. Though my so-called "older brother" and I may come from the same mother, we're not really "brothers" as far as bonds and what makes a FAMILY go. What made this chapter in TWD my personal favorite was the tale/story told, the romance between Javier & Kate, which was VERY well handled, Clementine being reminded by Javi of what it means to never let go of one's humanity, something Lee taught her, the use of Jesus (he was also in TWD Comics) in the Garcia family's story, and of course, the bond between the brothers. My "older brother" had ALL the worst traits of David, only ten folds, and unlike Javi, I'll never forgive him for all he's done. He's dead to me, and he'll remain as such, but their bond is very poignant and is one of the driving forces behind A New Frontier. Awesome analysis as always, Kay! :D This game, like Life Is Strange 2, does have me wondering "How things could've turned out?", if my so-called "brothers" weren't such pains to deal with, and I suppose that's why they hit hard. It's that feeling of longing, you know? Family, however, isn't determined through blood ties, but through the BONDS one forms with those they truly trust and love.

Its definitely not just you who found Season 3 to be bafflingly soulless and empty - I actually got a lot out of Season 2 and Michonne, they were flawed but in a way I could still meet halfway with my usual approach to these kinds of games. New Frontier just gave me fucking *nothing* to grab onto. Season 2 and Michonne did at least get me to feel some genuine emotion at events.

I loved this series unironically and it informed my future game dev efforts dramatically. Keep in mind the "your choices matter" nonsense was stripped from me after replaying season one. To be fair it would require the devs building huge expanses of a game that most players wouldnt ever see. Think about it in KZbin terms. Imagine filming, scripting editing etc five one hour videos knowing most of your audience wont even see the other four videos. It started my weird fascination with making tons upon tons of content for games and books that my audience will never see.

I’m surprised you didn’t speak about how poorly they handled Jane in season 3. The entire point of her character in season 2 is the ‘Lone Wolf’, who doesn’t want to be around others due to fear they might break down & give up (Like her sister Jamie did, not being able to make that jump). She then takes Clem under her wing, getting another chance to have a younger sister (and AJ) knowing/hoping that Clem won’t give up like Jamie did…. All for her to get pregnant, sad, and hang herself (Shown in a flashback in the first 2hrs of the game, no less). Completely giving up and leaving a 12/13 year old Clem to survive alone with a newborn. The complete antithesis of her character.

I don't really think that was the antithesis of Jane's character. Her character to me seemed to be about hating vulnerability, perhaps Jamie's vulnerability which she projects onto everyone else. She was deeply aware of how vulnerable pregnancy would make her, having seen Rebecca's fate. I think dislike of vulnerability usually comes from fear rather than strength. What is it about Jane's character that makes you think staying alive for Clementine is something she would care about?
@stillmyboy6708
@stillmyboy6708 22 күн бұрын
@@user-mt2co8ip4u Well the whole reason she’s a loner is because she doesn’t want a repeat of her younger sister ‘dragging her down’ and being unable to save her. She then gets over this, accepts Clem into her life, accepts her as a younger sister again and accepts that you don’t have to do it all on your own, caring about people is scary cause you can lose them. She then gets preggers and oh! Dead. For someone so torn up about the loss of her younger sister she seemed pretty okay for Clem to go through that but with an older one.

Javier was a much better protagonist than Clementine. I liked him *waaaaay* more than clementines 1 note edgy angsty sh*thead spiel she had going on in season 3 lol. It just sucks that the rest of season 3 was just kinda meh. I was indifferent to it overall, I just found Javier to be so endearing, and Jeff’s voice is great. (Javier’s VA) Season 4 was pretty good overall though, big step up in quality and I think it’s because they had an actual end in sight, which meant they didn’t have to worry about the long term goals or how to keep it going and I think that’s part of why S2 and 3 feel so disjointed, they didn’t have a clear vision. Looking forward to your thoughts on season 4, thanks for this!

I just wasn't a fan of the love triangle between the two bros and the undeciding chick. The whole NewFrontier stuff was alright and I foynd it kind of fascinating that Clem was a part of it. I HATED the reason Clem got kick out, seriously, the doc was getting high as a kite and Clem was abandoned no matter how you played it. She lost AJ and the game was very bitchy about the loss. But yeah, the love triangle was why I was so done at times and won't probably play it again.

I just replayed season 3 again. I think it’s better than I remembered it. I don’t think it’s a masterpiece by any means like season 1 but I think it’s a huge step up from season 2. A New Frontier just felt like a step in the right direction with giving us characters (at least imo) that we care for and are more interesting. Characters like Jesus, Tripp, Eleanor, etc just felt like they mattered. I didn’t get that vibe from the last season as so many characters just seemed to not hold any significant weight to the story and they were just there to add the body count. Javi and Clem mold together fairly well this time around and I love the parallels they have with stuff like baseball attires. It’s something so small but so well done I can’t help to admire it. Sure by episode 4&5 like most of the series will determine if fans hate the season or not and that’s when things start to get rocky with the people of Richmond and conflicting subplots with David and Gabe but there’s just something about the storyline that really kept me on my toes but in a good way. Season 3 had its struggles for sure especially when it comes out of character decisions that just didn’t make sense at times but I think it’s easily overshadowed by its complex and deep story about legacy and I think it accomplished its job by doing just that. I can’t tell you every moment within the game felt important but I do believe it did a great job of continuing Clem’s story while giving us a brand new story at the same time with different characters that aren’t actually 1 dimensional. Season 2 and season 3 however both suffer from middle child syndrome I feel and I think that’s what both struggle with where as season 4 I think corrected a lot of mistakes the 2 have suffered from in the past.

Not bring horrible but I completely disagree about giving us characters that we cared about. Since Tripp dies regardless in an incredibly cheap way I find his ultimate arc rather disappointing. Eleanor just becomes unlikeable then dissappears. Jesus was cool though even if he wasn't incredibly deep. Also, none of the antagonists this season hold a candle to Carver imo. Badger was just a generic evil guy and Joan was just a generic evil lady.

It's so difficult to care about Javier's family early in this game, the player is shown rapidly what their relationships are, and what the conflicts between them are but not why they should like these characters. In comparison it's so easy to immediately like Lee and Clem because one is a "oh he's a convincted killer, but is he a bad guy?" type of character and the other is just a sweet little girl. Season One made you like Lee and Clem first, and then set up conflicts, which I think is much better imo.

Season 1 set the bar SO high, and then Season 2 set it SO absolutely abysmally low, Season 4 is basically the 2nd best by default, but it’s not even because it does anything particularly spectacular, it’s just not as awful as 2, and a bit better than 3. 😂

loved hearing your thoughts on this! I personally didn't mind the second one (wasn't my favorite either, mind), but I really just didn't connect as deeply with the third season. maybe it's because i started playing TWD when all seasons had been released, but it just felt so odd to me to have everrryyyy game except one be focused on the same girl. I wanted to keep following her story. I do wish they'd made some different choices with her story along the way, but I still connected with her and the first and fourth season crews, so much more than w javier and fam. by the last episode of season 3 i was just starting to warm up to them. and lots of your criticisms of this game are spot on, especially about how jarring it is when choices are just sort of ignored. anyway, look forward to the next review! enjoy these conversations.

Wew, it's been a while since I've watched one of your videos or made a long comment. Hope ya guys missed me lol. So now onto my thoughts as per usual: During the lockdown in early 2020 I had downloaded The Walking Dead definitive edition which kinda forced me to replay the first 2 games despite having just finished them (playing season 2 twice in such a short span of time was torture I swear). By the time I reached Season 3, it felt like a breath of fresh air. Clem is not the main character and Javier is not half bad. I really enjoyed the game and didn't face the same bugs you did iirc. I really enjoyed the part your overthrow Joan, I mean who wouldn't want to oust an autocratic leader with a holier than thou attitude? The story could have had better turns and twist but largely I must say it's my second season after season 1. Season 4 is one I enjoyed but idk it never really appealed to me as much as Season 3. I think you gave a fair assessment overall of the game, it wasn't the best but it wasn't bad, it was alright imo. In regards to Michonne, I grew impatient and skipped that whole part to play season 4 lol

I hate a new frontier, so little choices, so little consequences. I'm the person who firmly against being a couple with someone-in-law because they are like family to me. And seeing Kate being so in love when you said no and no 5 times in a row, it's infuriating.

I can't agree that A New Frontier is better than Season Two, but I can understand why you would have that perspective, and I think that both of them were messes, just in varying degrees. @MertKayKay quote from someone on reddit because i didnt know either "The whole point of the final season was Clem and AJ finding a place to call home. And then they found it and then they had to defend it. At the end of the season Clem is happy that she finally got her home. Not many people get happy endings in that world and she was one of the lucky few. And then the comic comes out and shits all over this. Clem tries to sneak away from the school so she doesn't have to say goodbye to anyone and is caught by AJ. Where she claims that shes not happy here anymore and that she needs to go find happiness elsewhere and even leaves AJ behind. Her adopted fecking son. The one character she has been looking after since S2 and is the most important thing in her life to her. And she just leaves him behind. Cause she's not happy apparantly. The comic ruins all of her character and makes her quite selfish only caring about her own feelings and not anyone else's including her adopted sons"
@TheSinisterProdigy
@TheSinisterProdigy Жыл бұрын
@MertKayKay another comment " And while it is absolutely horrendous no matter the choices, it is even worse when you romanced and save Violet. Clementine can literally say to Violet’s face she wouldn’t go anywhere else because Violet is there, she can promise Violet she won’t leave her. Oh and Violet has abandonment issues, yeah go leave forever without saying a word, I bet Violet will totally be feeling on top of the world when AJ comes running through the gates with tears saying Clementine has left forever, she definitely will be happy to live after that without her girlfriend who promised she’d never leave. How fucking selfish and a spit in our faces of the choices we made."

Seeing all this run by me again reminded me of a lot of moments of why I hate this game so much. One being on how it reminded me on the passing of my grandma, and how a huge fight broke out that didn't need to happen, but also hate it could have done so much with it story wise, and failed in the end. Mostly with Kate. It is very VERY implied that she was hit/abused by her husband, that sadly dose go over a good number of people's head, but the game never dose anything with it. And the kids are aware of this as well, but due to how complex everything are for kids and parents like this, the game never did anything with this either. It mostly did it where it was mostly a lot of the character your playing's fault for a lot of things happening at the end. Another thing is that I felt it very gross that the game thought, that most players would want to be with Kate...Kate!? A vulnerable woman who lost her abusive husband, is now with his younger brother, and said ex husbands two kids. Like, What? Sorry? No. That's beyond gross. I hate I have to say this, but you can tell the people who wrote that part of the game do not have siblings what so ever. A lot of people with siblings, even myself, can tell you that, I would never ever be with anyone who has date or been with said sibling. Cause it's gross. And I dislike the fact that even if you reject her the game goes, "But you tots did bang out of the game's options." And I am just sitting here like, "Why did you put in so much effort to me rejecting her, when it doesn't even matter in the end? Not only that but why also make it why it's now my problem for me not sleeping with her when this isn't even my choic? REALLY!?" As for David I felt that he would give me half truths. Like yea, him telling me about how he feels about Kate, and wanting to go back to the army, which I mean why take his word for it, when later on in the game we are with Kate for a good chuck of it, and she shows signs of not wanting to remember David at all and the things he did to her. Not only that she also says she would never go back to him and calls him a ex husband as well. Sorry, but No. Kinda wish the game just dropped the act with him of caring if I slept with her, and wondered if Kate said anything to me about him, because if she did it might bring down everyone views him in a different light. Now that would be something! Last thing I want to bring up is Gabe, since I thought it would be interesting if the game did this with him. Him seeing that he is in fact slowly becoming his dad, and with the topic of abuse I brought up is realizing, that why he hates Kate, and feels the way he dose as normal is because of his dad, and him struggling with trying to reprogram himself with his upbringing. And the one who shows him this is, Javier. The game very much dumbs down the abuse, but if they had the balls to talk about it then imply it, then I wouldn't have hate it so much. I mean think about it, they could have done options with you helping Gabe with this, and with the whole car thing about Kate saying she wants to leave Gabe, but have him hearing it, then with Javier help with options talking to him about how he feels about it, and hell even where her feelings come from this and he has options to show he is his own person and not like his father at all. Then when the moment happens where she needs help he dose go back to help her out and not Javier, and you get a moment with Kate talking to Javier feeling guilty over thinking Gabe was like her ex husband, and wanting to leave him on the road since he is after all a child. As well as her saying she said what she said is because she is scared of Gabe doing things he did. Which I know very heavy, but I would like the game a lot more for addressing these fears, and topics. Rather then just lightly mention them, and go, "Nah we don't need to do anything with this. Why do that? It's not like abuse is not a hot topic now!" I am getting heated. I am going to ended with something positive. Your great, I love all your videos, and even if I am someone who gets motion sickness form some games I will listen those games you cover in the background to show my support. Even if you are talking negatively about a game or praising it. I know I am going to have a good time with it.

Season 3 felt just as much of an experiment as a game. Testing the waters to see if players would like clem not being there (as much) along with the DLC so they could explore other stories. I think the issue is that the walking dead has a million stories to tell, and seasons 1+2 shaped the fact they were going to tell clem's story and the players would follow her journey, so when you put her into a much more backseated role people kind of wait until she's back on screen to "continue the story" if that makes sense. I personally enjoyed the change to more simplified controls and actions as the "puzzles" always seemed to just pointlessly break up the story to do something arbitrary. With my suspension of disbelief in full swing I liked how S4 ended and how it made me feel inside, the story of Still Not Bitten and how it ended up getting made was really cool. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts in 1-2 years 🤣 Why the fuck everyone so glossy in s3 tho
