The important things about lovecraft is 1) he was so racist that his work had trouble being published due to being racist, which given the time period means they had to be extremely racist. 2) he called his wife one of the good jews 3) he was so racist he routinely scared himself with his own fantasies of how he perceived other cultures which is his entire bibliography

I loveeeeeeeeeeeee conversations about early Stephen King, Im one of the girlies who think hes extremely good and extremely interesting, but his early works are just the writhing wails of a suffering white man. Which makes them RIVETING. Love u mert, you never fucking miss.

This review is wonderful. Thorough, detailed, heartfelt, while also being a no-holds barred critique. It strikes me that IT really could have been a flawless, poignant masterwork about the cycles of violence and the evils we allow. But Stephen King just couldn't get of his own way, so this is the book we got. And it's a fantastic book, but those flaws are large and deep enough to mar it pretty wholly for me. I think that makes it all the more sad as a story, honestly.

i think one way the losers were able to have power over It is displayed in your part about patrick. patrick and bev both see different things, and we learn then that if two people look at pennywise at the same time they’ll see completely different visions, right? except, not the losers. with the losers, they all are able to see the same fear monster in whichever of their fears it has taken on. this means that it is able to be damaged by the rules of the form it takes by all of them, instead of each person having to figure out how to hurt It in whatever form they see individually each time. their connection (or shine, if you’ve read many other of king’s works) allows them to all see the same monster and defeat it with teamwork, rather than all fighting alone in the same room.

everyone else has already basically said everything i could say relevant to It and this video, which is an absolutely wonderful breakdown, so instead i will go with a little aside tangentially related to this discussion. patrick was honestly scarier than pennywise because he was just so human and yet had no humanity in him. i feel like patrick hockstetter would’ve turned into mr. mercedes had he not been killed by pennywise. i remember reading the mr. mercedes trilogy and just thinking, “oh, we’ve seen this kid before, just with a different face and name.” thank you for this wonderful video!

For the de-mystification of IT and overly explaining it, I find that to be compelling in it's own way. A monster, eldritch and strange, that few try to understand or fight against, is actually definable when examined - Fear made it seem invincible and eldritch, Fear made it an elder god, once it is explained, IT loses some punch even for the reader. It's kind of meta, but it also *still* has the faults of undermining the threat the villain imposes. So I got mixed feelings. On one hand, cool concept, on the other, I like the tension secrecy gives.

I know I’m a couple years late to the party here, but I’m always happy to hear someone talking about this game. Full of cool ideas , very pretty, but it feels more like a tech demo than a game sometimes. Especially when it builds up to this really intense climactic showdown, ratchets up the momentum as you get into this knock-down drag-out fight with the bad guy’s chief lieutenant and then out of nowhere the game just

I really hate how the thing that signifies the return of It is the gay guy getting killed. Yeah, it's awful, he obviously doesn't deserve it, and in a different book/movie it'd make sense. But here it doesn't. It's about the struggles children have with being taken seriously when they're reporting sexual abuse and violence. Yeah, homophobia sucks, but that shouldn't be the focus. Like I hate littering but if Halloween opened up with some guy throwing some trash on the ground, I'd still call that stupid.

I’m so excited to see you do a long form analysis (they’re my favorite). I’ve read A LOT of Stephen King but somehow I never (or maybe avoided to) read IT. I’m more keen on his short story anthologies, so this was a really nice surprise and much needed video. I’ve watched once (amazing) and will rewatch since I like to clean during long videos. Thank you and Adam for all your hard work. ❤

I want to preface this comment by noting that I am not criticizing your work at all. I love analysis of IT and yours in particular is excellent so far. Also you may cover what I'm about to add later in the video because I'm currently only at the 34:17 mark, but anyway... Derry is based on Bangor, King's hometown and long-term place of residence. I grew up in Northeast Maine, and moved to Bangor in the last decade; King's residence is always littered with tourists taking pictures outside of it. A landmark of the city. King includes a lot of references to Bangor in his books. A gay man named Charlie Howard was murdered by being thrown off a bridge in Bangor in 1984, only a couple years before IT was written. The body of water running through Bangor and underneath the bridge is called the Kenduskeag Stream. You have the pronunciation almost down but it's more like "Kenduskeg" where no part of the word is more pronounced than the other. Accordingly it's theorized that King was very affected by this murder and a lot of material in the book was inspired by the incident, including the direct fictional representation of the attack in the book. Personally I find IT to be King's way of dealing with the murder and ever growing crime in Bangor by giving the town a monster that's the cause of all evil happenings. The town is alive with some sort of Eldritch horror. Knowing this makes analysis of the book so engaging- it's ironic that Bill is so anti-analysis in that scene you opened the video with, when in truth the book was arguably written to be deconstructed.

I'm a huge fan of Stephen King. I've been reading his novels since I was waaaaay too young to get them, and I must say, I love his writing. I do agree with most of these points, but I especially agree with how memorable his actual writing style is. There are lines from the Stand or the Green Mile that are burned into my brain and float back to me at random times. His writing can be cringy (especially when reading it out loud) but I love it all the same.

I’m kind of disturbed at how many of us read this at 9-13. I snuck my mom’s copy into my backpack and read it at the park. It’s a double edged sword. Do I want my seven year old son reading King next year? No. Did I start reading King at 8 and turn out okay. Yes. Except my lingering terror of clowns. Also, King is my autistic interest. For 34 years now. Would I deny finding his autistic “thing” to my son, who is also autistic? Food for my own brain to consume.

I'd love it if you did a video like this on Salem's Lot, the first of what I call King's 'Small Town Stories' which also includes It. These are stories where the town itself is a character and you slowly see it fall apart, as well as having an ensemble cast that come together to attempt to remove something that brings out the worst in everyone there. Could make for excellent fuel for another 3 hour long video (which I fucking adore!) Seriously, keep up the hard work!

On the other side of children losing innocence, i see that adults have their innocence be perverted or twisted if you will. The children's punishments of being tied, ozen's love for lyza creating hate towards liko, bondrewd's push for innovation, bondrewds love, etc. All of the adults seem to have good intentions or atleast something along those feelings, its just twisted due to the nature of the person itself or the nature of the abyss.
