The Pennsylvania high school football game between Central Catholic and Penn Hills had an insane ending. Central Catholic trailed 28-27 with just a few seconds left and lined up for the potential game winning field goal. The kick was blocked however, and Penn Hills players ran onto the field to celebrate. This celebration was short lived however, as the play had never been whistled dead and Central Catholic picked up the loose ball and ran it to the end zone for a touchdown. Since the refs ruled that the ball never crossed the line of scrimmage, it was still live. With the score, Central Catholic defeated Penn Hills 33-28.

Sorry for posting high school football but I thought this was a pretty crazy and unique way for a game to end. Also for those confused, the play was not whistled dead after the block because the refs ruled that the ball never went past the line of scrimmage (although this is debatable). If the ball had landed past the line of scrimmage and nobody touched it, then the play would have been whistled dead.

In this case, yes. In any other case, no. Whistle is for letting everyone know that something has happened, that caused the play to be dead. Player goes out of bounds, play is dead even without the whistle. Incomplete pass, play is dead when ball hits the turf even without the whistle. Player has a knee down, play is dead even without the whistle. So you as a player must know not to hit anyone out of bounds, hit a receiver after incomplete pass and so on, even if the whistle has not blown yet. Just nitpicking, sorry.

This exact thing happened in the NFL once. 1988 Eagles-Giants game in OT in the Meadowlands. Eagles went for the field goal, Giants blocked it, ball landed behind the lines, Giants celebrated, and meanwhile Clyde Simmons of the Eagles picked it up and ran it in for a game-winning touchdown.

It also reminded me of that Saints-Rams game where a Saints punt went into the end zone and looked like it would bounce past the end line but didn't; all the Saints and most of the Rams walked to the sidelines assuming the ball went out of bounds for a touchback, while one of the Rams picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown. @LTNetjak No if it rolls past LOS it turns into punt rules. Basically if the kicking team touches the ball it would be downed for the opposing team. What is the rule when a punt or field goal is blocked? Who can pick up the ball and run with it? "The rule is the same - for the most part - in both high school and college. A punt or field goal that is blocked and remains behind the line of scrimmage can be picked up and advanced by either team. For any field goal or punt that is partially blocked and travels beyond the line of scrimmage, think of it as a regular punt. The kicking team can down the ball but not advance it unless first touched by the defense after it crosses the line. The defense can pick up the ball and run with it or let it roll dead. One difference between the college and high school rules comes when a partially blocked field goal travels beyond the line and is eventually downed or rolls dead. At the high school level, think of it again as a punt. Wherever the ball is downed is where the ball is spot. At the college level, the ball is returned to the 20-yard line or the previous line of scrimmage, whichever benefits the defensive team." Source USA football com

For those (like me) who were confused as to when the kicking team was allowed to advance the ball: This is universal - high school, college and pro. If the blocked kick LANDS either behind the line of scrimmage or in the neutral zone, everyone can advance the ball unless the referees blow the play dead. If it LANDS past the neutral zone, only the defense can touch it; the kicking team can only advance it if the defense touches the ball but doesn't secure it (for example, the Leon Lett Thanksgiving blooper I'm sure y'all have seen before). Where the ball rolls after landing is inconsequential; it only matters where the ball fell. In this case, it seems to fall in the 35 yard line but then rolls towards the LOS at the 32. The roll didn't matter, the initial bounce did. But it's a good thing #52 hopped on it because the refs could've blown it dead right there. So, good heads up by #52, the kids will learn a valuable lesson - don't leave your job unfinished lol EDIT: Same rules apply for blocked punts also.

I knew the basic rule but was curious about the distinction between LANDING and ROLLING as it is fairly clear it did eventually cross the line of scrimmage before being picked up, but I wasn't sure if that mattered as it certainly landed behind the line. Once in high school the other team kicked the ball to us and it came straight to me. I went to catch it, it hit my knee and flew back the way it had come from. It landed probably 25 yards away surrounded by opposing players. Instead of picking it up they all stood around it watching it as it was still bouncing around. I sprinted toward it and dived onto it, giving me a 25 yard return in a strange way.

problem is the line judge was right there and got the call wrong, he should have called the play dead, that was his job. The ball was clearly over the line of scrimmage, the player who picked it up was standing on the 32 yard line (which was the line of scrimmage) and he was reaching forward, just because the view of the ball is blocked by another player common sense tells you because he had to reach forward, whole standing on the line of scrimmage that the ball had to be over the line by at least 1/2 a yard if not more....the line judge was watching the whole play unfold and was right there to make the call....he got it wrong....that is a hometown official for you...could see him and the coach talking and laughing at the end when they gave the final result of the play.

@@Waitukubuli 100% right. Another thing about this play is that if the ball had rolled dead (i.e. to a stop), I believe the officials would have blown the play dead, similar to a punt that rolls dead. But because the ball was still rolling after being blocked, it was still alive. As long as the ball was recovered by the kicking team behind the line of scrimmage, than they could advance it. Correct call. You can always advance a blocked field goal if offense recovers behind the line. This is same rule in NFL that the offense cannot advance fumble inside 2 minutes unless the player who fumbled is first to touch it. But whenever ball is touched by opposition anyone can pick it up. Just like a muffed punt.

I see what you see. The line judge shouldn’t have moved, because he is at the line of scrimmage. the second down marker is beyond the 32 yard line that also marks the ball. So somewhere around where he picked it up is the line of scrimmage. it is all too close to call and the ref was right there. Someone in the press booth at 1:22 says it crosses the line too. With all that I don’t think the call would have been overturned if they had access to this camera view.

@CRneu
@CRneu Жыл бұрын
it's so ridiculously close. Without video replay this is a tough call in the moment. The line of scrimmage is the 32 yd line and the ball is still *barely* on the 32 yd line. it's definitely going to roll past it if it isn't picked up.
@starwarriorterra8373
@starwarriorterra8373 Жыл бұрын
Judging by other "past the line of scrimmage" rules, it's likely the rule is focused on where the player is, the same way illegal forward pass or illegally kicking the ball is only called when the player is entirely past the line. With that in mind, it's a close call.
@alostbard
@alostbard Жыл бұрын
Has no bearing on this play. It just means the blocked ball cannot be picked up and then thrown for a pass if it rolls past LOS, but can be picked up and ran from anywhere. Years ago in a bowl game between Wisconsin and Arkansas, the Hogs blocked a punt, but the Wisconsin punter picked up the ball and completed a pass for a first down. I remember the TV analyst remarking on the rare play, and how he would not have been able to throw it past the LOS, but could have ran it even if the ball went past. This was many years ago, so rules may have changed.
@tsrgoinc
@tsrgoinc Жыл бұрын
Yeah, very hard without video so would have been a judgement call but even so it also shouldn’t have stood because before they run the touchdown in, the Central Catholic’s sideline came onto the field. I believe The correct call would have been as both side lines came on before the ball was ruled dead, would have been both sidelines penalised with an unsportsmanlike. Now the penalties offset and then I think to replay the down however as the clock had expired the game could have been over but I think then technically even though there were offsetting penalties the game can’t end on the penalty! I’m a sure on high school rules though!

Completely across. Just like when a QB is accused of throwing the ball after crossing the LOS (illegal forward pass) if ANY PART of the QB is behind the line, then the pass is legal. Until the ball is completely across the LOS it is deemed to be in the backfield. It’s the inverse of the goal-line rule.

I don't know about High School, but in College, the rule is the ball has to be COMPLETELY BEYOND the neutral zone. If it doesn't go past the neutral zone, it's a live ball that can be advanced by either team. The neutral zone is the length of the footfall. People are correct concerning the HL. He should have remained at the neutral zone until the ball is recovered.

I find it funny you can hear the guy in the background saying “It doesn’t matter, it was blocked”. Evidently they don’t know the rules, If the ball doesn’t cross the line of scrimmage and not downed by blocking team, it is live and can be returned by offense.
@TheBearGrappler
@TheBearGrappler Жыл бұрын
If the kicked ball blocked by a defender first touches the ground behind the line of scrimmage, the kicking team can pick it up and advance it. If it is merely tipped or first lands past the line of scrimmage, it is treated the same as a punt meaning that the kicking team cannot recover it unless the "receiving" team first touches it. When a blocked kicked is untouched by the defense (i.e. ball is kicked into the backside of your own player) by rule the ball becomes dead and the play is over.
@Namath1000

A ball kicked into the backside of a player on your team is NOT a dead ball if that player is in or behind the neutral zone. ANY touching by either team in or behind the neutral zone is ignored.

Wow. That was really close. There is discrepancy is to whether the down box accurately marked the line of scrimmage. When the center snapped the ball, it appeared the nose of the ball was more than half a yard ahead of the down box, and that the head linesman had the real line of scrimmage marked. I listened for a whistle when the ball rolled unattended after the blocked kick, but there was none. I have to give the benefit of the doubt to the officials here for 1) not blowing the whistle, 2) continuing to officiate the play.

Head's-up play, but that ball was past the line of scrimmage. He could have picked it up behind the line, but he didn't. The official line is shown by the sideline official holding the down marker (the stick with the big red 2 on it.) The player stands over the ball as it approaches the marker, but doesn't pick it up until after it has rolled past it.
