I finished reading A Darker Shade Of Magic yesterday and now I am waiting for the people on my buddyread to finish it (she hasn't even started yet!) so we comment and read this one for I need more of this world. Great review, I am not a fan of character driven stories but I always appreciate a good character development.

I agree, I think magic-based stories are often more about plot than character, but I enjoyed the mix of action and character development in this one. :)

Awesome review, Mike! Can't wait to read this one, hopefully at the end of this month. And I love what you had to say about Victoria Scwab as a writer and how connected she is to this series, because I feel the same. I'm not quite sure about her portrayal of queer characters, but I'll have to reserve judgment until at least after the second book. But I loved ADSOM (h8rs to the left) and I'm excited to read AGOS!

+perpetualpages Oh I would *definitely* look forward to a discussion from you about queerness in ADSOM and AGOS! Rhy gets a lot more page time in the second book so it helps in fleshing out his character and sexuality IMO. :)

I love character-driven books so this one was perfect for me, I'm so invested in these characters that it hurts. I finished it 2 weeks ago and haven't stopped thinking about it since. I'm still looking for a new series to read, tried various but they all felt short.
