The first 3 rounds are in Karlsruhe alongside the GRENKE Chess Open, then after a rest day the last 6 rounds are in the Kulturhaus LA8 in Baden-Baden. The field features World Champion Magnus Carlsen and fellow Top 10 players Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Vishy Anand and Levon Aronian, as well as women's no. 1 Hou Yifan.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves and then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If players are tied for first place a rapid play-off will take place. Official website: www.grenkechessclassic.com

Germany has a deeply rooted chess culture. We have many GMs and IMs, there are loads of chess clubs and the DSB has about 90000 members. But since decades Germany lacks a real top player, someone who can enter the top 10 in world ranking and even reach out for the world championship. The last one was Dr. Robert Hübner, who lost the candidates final against Korchnoi in 1980. I hope Vincent will make it to the top and raise the chess enthusiasm in Germany once again, like Magnus did it in Norway.

More than 300 ELO points difference between Vincent and his opponent. Still Vincent made it look easy and logical/clear which indeed reminds me of Bobby Fischer. GM Niclas Huschenbeth on Facebook about Congratulations to my fellow German Vincent Keymer, who accomplished one of the most amazing feats I have ever seen. As the No. 99 seed, he was leading the 3rd Grenke Chess Open with one round to go with two other players. In the final round, he then beat the No. 1 seed, GM Richard Rapport, with the Black pieces to win the tournament and qualify to play against the likes of Carlsen & Caruana next year in the Grenke Chess Classics. He is 13 years old by the way. Check out his games from the tournament here: chess24.com/…/live-tou…/grenke-chess-open-2018/9/1/2

If I am understanding FIDE's rules correctly, Vincent would only need ~2.5/9 in the Grenke Classic (assuming a 2750 average rating) to score a norm. This "low" score is of course a great achievement for any IM, much less a 13-year-old, and not at all guaranteed to happen, but I wonder if it did, would it be the lowest score for a GM norm ever achieved?

No, there is a minimum amount of points you have to score to reach a norm, with nine rounds it is 3,5 points out of 9 games. If you score less and have a performance over 2600 you can't score a norm.
@notexactlypaul
@notexactlypaul 6 жыл бұрын
Benex1997 Hmm. I see that being awarded for winning an international championship requires 35% performance, but do not see that is required for a norm tourney. The tables only go down to 35% scores though, so I do believe you; just don't see that explicitly in the regs.
@Benex1997

And at the last round of the German Bundesliga (with Keymer) I watched, I still joked about how people can call their children "the Winner" ... - Ah, well. It seems to work. ;) Kidding aside, the last four rounds were a truly sick run, maybe with that tiny bit luck that is needed, e.g. when it comes to pairings: - Buhmann is at least beatable at times; and Richard going all-in-to-must-win , but then missing the correct sacrifice in a complicated position. Congrats!

A dream tournament for the kid. But with the king running across the board white should have opened lines. Instead he was happy with 3 pawns which looked nice but were 2 far back to be any threat. As a result black had an extra piece and all the initiative . Very surprising for a 2700 especially Rapport who's an aggressive player. n Nerves in the big tourney!

He had three pawns for the Bishop, around the 6 minute mark. At that time Report wasn't even down material.

Not to brag, but I once blundered a rook and a queen on the same square.
