I played Duncan Suttles in Vancouver BC, in 1964. Iost as black in the exchange variation of the Queen's Gambit decline. It came down to bishop vs knights inn blockaded position. Afterwards Suttles told me he would have won sooner on my side of the board. It was probably my best game I ever lost.

Gill Rowley not that hard to find, though, if you just see the bishop check and think, “man, if only that rook wasn’t on d8.” And then you spot it immediately. As for most brilliant moves of Fischer, I don’t think this one comes close. But still sweet any time you sacrifice your queen for the win!

In your first puzzle saw QxN+ KxQ but g8 Q + QxQ then Nf6+ and mates or wins Q then R. Apparently Ng5 is mate in 15, but a double Queen sack looks more elegant and leaves R B N v B. Black can wriggle out of immediate mate.

@agadmator #suggestion The first puzzle is mate in 5 actually. Queen takes h7, king has to take. Then Nf6 instead of Ng6, opening up the path for the rook, the king has no moves queen has to take on F6. But now promoting the pawn to queen is checkmate.
@Hummabubba
@Hummabubba 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, but inferior side line after Kxh7 in the puzzle: You can play g8=Q+, then when Qxg8, you can then play Rxg8 and after Kxg8, you'd have Nf6+, forking the king and rook, and ending the variation up a piece. Obviously not as good as checkmate, but still cool

sorry if this an amateur question, but why at 2:55 G4 is not considered a "bad move"? from what i learned, it just weakens your king and exposes it to all kind of threats. And why would G6 (for black) be considered a bad move, altough he is just moving one square with the pawn and there's no other exposure (as in H3 which already pushed for white).

With the first puzzle I had a different solution which at first I thought was a forced checkmate but turns out not to be but is still quite beautiful. I thought Qxh7, Kxh7, g8=Q, Qxg8, Nf6+, (if Kh8, Rxg8#) if Kxh6, Nxg8+, Kh5, Nf6+ winning the rook

Fischer claimed that, in most positions, if knights were worth 3 points than bishops were worth about 3.20 points. I may be incorrect, but I believe before him, most high rated players and theorists generally regarded the pieces evenly in most positions. In games with time increments less than 3 minutes, I prefer the knight to the bishop.

- 7:26, I thought 1.g8Q+ Qxg8 (1...Kxh6 2.Qh8+ Qh7 3.Qf6+) 2.Nf6+ Kxh6 (2...Kh8 3.Rxg8#) 3.Nxg8+ Kh5 4.Nf6+ and Nxd7, with 2 pieces up. A bigger material advantage than Fischer's. However, his variantion would lead to mate earlier. - 9:38, 1.fxe6?! Ng5! 2.hxg5 Kxg7 3.e7 Qh3#
