I am a 64 year old retired professional violist. I have learned that the best instrument makes all the difference. Since the vast majority of violas are not very good, its an enormous struggle to find a really great instrument. Second, once finding the best viola, the cost is generally beyond the performer's range. Finally, there needs to be more luthiers who specialize in making the finest violas which are light in weight and thin in thicknesses. Most violas are way too woody in thickness and heaviness.

I wonder if Mr Ridout has played the piece that opened with the video...Haydn in C... which is in fact for cello. Perhaps be played a transcription?
